Best Transcoding Settings

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

I'm running Emby Server 3.5.3.0 on Windows 10 with the following specs:

Intel i7-6700K (4.0GHz) (Skylake Chipset, Z170 Southbridge)

16GB DDR4 RAM

Nvidia GeForce GT 1030 (2GB GDDR5)

The documentation talks about hardware accelerated transcoding having an "Auto" setting, but for me there are only the options of "None" or the various different hardware methods. I have no "Auto" option.

Should I be using hardware decoding? If so, which one?

If using hardware decoding, should I also be using hardware encoding?

Thanks for the help.

But to answer your questions

Yes the documentation needs updating as there is no Auto in that area.

This should only be enabled if you have the appropriate hardware and may result in errors otherwise. If you're unsure, leave the setting at Auto and the system will attempt to automatically detect this.

As for decoding it is dependent on your hardware capabilities.

If your hardware is capable of decoding and encoding, yes.

But as noted about Emby will detect your systems capabilities in the next release.

And with the upcoming release, we suggest the defaults as the best way to start. Thanks !
