dardata 0 Posted October 1, 2018 Posted October 1, 2018 Greetings. I first want to say thank you for this software. The UI is amazing and the ability to quickly and easily set up local network streaming is precisely what I have been looking for. That being said, I am having issues with playback on the machine that is also the emby host. When playing from the emby host, there are severe audio desync issues and the playback quality is low. These files are able to play without these issues in VLC or in Kodi. I am also able to play these files back via the emby web interface ( media.local ) without any issues, including on a chromecast and other tablet devices that are significantly underpowered when compared to the server. None of the system resources are pegged when playing back from the server ( 60% memory, 35% cpu) and I have set the minimum processor state to 100% in power options. This issue also persists even if I drop the display resolution down to 1080 (down from 4k).
dardata 0 Posted October 1, 2018 Author Posted October 1, 2018 (edited) Here is the embyserver.txt file. The timeframe I was trying to view a video was sometime between 0715 and 0730 embyserver.txt Edited October 1, 2018 by dardata
Luke 42077 Posted October 1, 2018 Posted October 1, 2018 Yea, you understand that transcoding requires significant CPU, right? You cannot compare a web browser to VLC or Kodi because web browsers have limited codec support. When the browser doesn't support the media natively, the server has to transcode it and this can be a costly process. Does this answer your question? If you'd like to reduce cpu consumption, these are your best options: Use an Emby app that can direct play more media formats without transcoding, such as Emby Theater for Windows: https://emby.media/emby-theater.html Convert the media to more streaming friendly formats. Our media convert feature can help you with that. Or, limit your playback to plain mp4 video files with aac/mp3 audio. Does this help?
dardata 0 Posted October 1, 2018 Author Posted October 1, 2018 Are you trying to transcode 4k?I have not modified any transcoding options. Where can I verify this? I understand that transcoding takes a significant amount of CPU, which is why I mentioned my CPU was at a fairly constant 35% utilization. If the CPU utilization was the bottleneck, then wouldn't the CPU usage be spiked at 100%?
Guest asrequested Posted October 1, 2018 Posted October 1, 2018 There'll be a transcode log. What CPU do you have, and are you trying to use hardware acceleration?
dardata 0 Posted October 1, 2018 Author Posted October 1, 2018 There'll be a transcode log. What CPU do you have, and are you trying to use hardware acceleration? Intel Cherry Trail X5-Z8350 No hardware acceleration is selected. I have attached the most current transcode log. I was also wondering, if transcoding is done on the server, then shouldn't every device have playback issues? transcode_log.txt
Guest asrequested Posted October 1, 2018 Posted October 1, 2018 (edited) Yeah, that CPU isn't gonna get anywhere near what you're trying to make it do. Intel Xeons have trouble. The browser can't play those files, so you'll need to use a different player, like the one Luke pointed you at. Wait! You know I was asking for your server CPU, right? arrbee99 1815 Posted October 1, 2018 Posted October 1, 2018 Sorry for my ignorance, but still confused as to exactly what device / app is not playing items back properly ?

It is just a tiny HTPC. I am still a bit confused as to why files play fine from other devices but not the local one if the server is doing all the transcoding. Sorry for my ignorance, but still confused as to exactly what device / app is not playing items back properly ? The device is my media server (with "server" being used lightly as it is just a HTPC, not an enterprise grade server) I can play all files back without issue on any other device on my network, but from the server, if I browse to localhost:80 and play the file from there, the quality is poor.
Happy2Play 9780 Posted October 1, 2018 Posted October 1, 2018 (edited) I am confused as this is AVI and has nothing to do with 4K or 1080p. Does this issue only happen with AVI files? FPS 80+ from log Edited October 1, 2018 by Happy2Play

ebr 16169 Posted October 1, 2018 Posted October 1, 2018 You said "localhost:80"... That is not the default port for Emby and could possibly be conflicting with other services. How did you set that up?
dardata 0 Posted October 1, 2018 Author Posted October 1, 2018 So we need to know exactly what player he's having an issue with. I am only using chrome to browse to either localhost:80 (from the server itself) or to media.local (media being the name of the server and local being the domain) Are you saying anywhere on your LAN you have playback issues, and localhost doesn't? Wireless connections? No. localhost is the only one WITH issues. Every other device works normally, including wireless connections, tablets, chromecast, phones, and other desktop machines.
dardata 0 Posted October 1, 2018 Author Posted October 1, 2018 (edited) You said "localhost:80"... That is not the default port for Emby and could possibly be conflicting with other services. How did you set that up? I set that up under Expert > Advanced. There are no other services running on port 80 as it was a clean win install with no other software at the time. currports also only shows emby listening on port 80. I did this so I could be lazy and not have to enter name:port when I accessed it from another computer. Edited October 1, 2018 by dardata
ebr 16169 Posted October 1, 2018 Posted October 1, 2018 Is the browser on the host machine different from the ones on the other machines you are testing from? Can you try setting the port back to the default 8096 just to see if it makes a difference?

Can you try setting the port back to the default 8096 just to see if it makes a difference? I am using chrome on all devices. When I use the chromecast, I am using an android tablet and clicking on the chromecast icon in the top right of the emby window. I changed ports and restarted the service but this did not improve performance.
Guest asrequested Posted October 1, 2018 Posted October 1, 2018 The transcode log says it doesn't support the codec. level=51&TranscodeReasons=ContainerNotSupported,VideoCodecNotSupported,AudioCodecNotSupported Level 51 isn't supported, correct?

Everything before "TranscodeReasons" are the conditions limitations. Level=51 is the max condition. Edited October 1, 2018 by Happy2Play

Guest asrequested Posted October 1, 2018 Posted October 1, 2018 Ah, thanks happy. So then does the browser not support Xvid?
