linglom 0 Posted September 7, 2018 Posted September 7, 2018 I’m currently into learning about transcoding because I need to buy a NAS and deliver content to my steadily growing familiy. Please help me to choose the best tool for my needs, because there are quite some things I don’t understand: As far as I understand my camera records 4K @ H.264 AVC codec. NAS like the DS-218play f.e. can’t handle this by default as far as I understand. Will emby do the transcoding job for me so we can watch those files on different devices? Or will I have to go for a NAS like the DS-218+ which seems to transcode 4K H.264 and H.265? I set up emby on my pc to watch movies with DTS codec which my LGTV can’t handle – since I did not know about this until last week, I’m quite happy. Emby saves me quite a lot of work already.
Guest asrequested Posted September 7, 2018 Posted September 7, 2018 I could give you a short answer. But that will raise more questions. You appear to want to understand why something needs to be transcoded. Take a look at this. It should answer most of that. https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/48799-direct-play-vs-direct-streaming-vs-transcoding/
Solution Luke 42077 Posted September 7, 2018 Solution Posted September 7, 2018 Hi, yes Emby will transcode when devices do not support the media format. Please let us know if this helps. Thanks ! 1
linglom 0 Posted September 7, 2018 Author Posted September 7, 2018 Thanks you. This really helps a lot.
Guest asrequested Posted September 7, 2018 Posted September 7, 2018 Oh boy! So when you have trouble transcoding, you'll be asking the same question.
