Additional finding: Open Subtitles plugin localization (Japanese vs Simplified Chinese)

Hi,

I found another localization inconsistency, this time in the Open Subtitles plugin (version 1.0.69.0).

Environment:

  • Emby Server 4.11.0.7 Beta

  • Ubuntu 24.04.5 LTS

  • Web UI

  • Languages tested: Japanese (ja) and Simplified Chinese (zh-Hans)

1. Japanese

Most of the Open Subtitles settings are correctly displayed in Japanese, including the username and password labels.

However, the username help text remains in English:

"This must be your Open Subtitles username and not your email address."

2. Simplified Chinese

The same help text is correctly displayed in Chinese.

3. Weblate comparison

The Japanese translation already exists in EmbyServer / OpenSubtitles.

Resource key: LabelOpenSubtitlesUsernameHelp

Current English source on Weblate:

"This must be your opensubtitles.com username and not your email address."

Japanese translation:

"opensubtitles.comのユーザー名を入力してください。メールアドレスは使用できません。"

Interestingly, the English text displayed in the Japanese UI differs slightly from the current Weblate source:

  • UI: "Open Subtitles username"

  • Weblate: "opensubtitles.com username"

This may indicate that the installed plugin uses an older resource version, or that the Japanese translation is not being loaded correctly for this particular string.

I understand that RESX resources are referenced by keys rather than by matching English text, so the wording difference alone does not establish the cause.

Could you check whether the Japanese l00_OPEN_SUBTITLES_OVERVIEW.thumb.png.e51034db8057ad42cec42a7dc6b203fe.png02_OPEN_SUBTITLES_WEBLATE_REFERENCE.thumb.png.c53ea0de696b4c0df884bbbfe415bd09.png01_OPEN_SUBTITLES_JA_vs_ZH.thumb.png.f16c1ee3636edc6a16e39285421a00f3.pngocalization resources bundled with Open Subtitles 1.0.69.0 are up to date?

This appears somewhat similar to the DLNA localization issue reported earlier, although Open Subtitles is only partially affected.

I have screenshots showing the Japanese and Simplified Chinese results, along with the corresponding Weblate entry.

Thanks again!

Hi Emby Team,

Following my previous Japanese localization reports, I have identified three additional UI inconsistencies during real-world testing.

The Japanese translations in Weblate appear to be complete, and I have verified the following issues in the current interface.

Test environment

  • Emby Server: 4.11.0.7 Beta

  • OS: Ubuntu 24.04.5 LTS

  • Client: Emby Web UI (desktop browser and mobile Safari)

  • UI language: Japanese (ja-JP)

1. User Management – Incorrect "Title" sorting label

Screenshot: 01_UserSort_Title_vs_Username.png

On the Users page, the sorting dialog displays "Title" instead of a user-related label such as "Username" or "Name".

I also checked the English interface and confirmed that "Title" is used there as well.

Since this screen manages user accounts rather than media items, a context-specific label would be more appropriate.

Could this screen use a dedicated sorting label?

I would prefer not to modify the shared Japanese translation of "Title", since that label is correct elsewhere.

2. Language names are not localized consistently

Screenshot: 02_Language_Dropdowns_Comparison.png

The following language selectors display their choices in English, even when the interface language is set to Japanese:

  • Subtitle settings → Preferred subtitle languages

  • Library → Advanced → Preferred metadata language

However, Emby Web Settings → General → Display language correctly shows localized language names.

Could these selectors use a consistent localization approach for displaying language names?

The underlying language codes and selection behavior should remain unchanged.

3. Built-in "Live TV" label remains in English

Screenshot: 03_LiveTV_Builtin_Label.png

The built-in "Live TV" entry is displayed in English in both the navigation sidebar and the home-screen tile.

Unlike regular libraries, this built-in entry does not appear to support manual renaming.

Could its displayed name be localized according to the selected UI language?

The expected Japanese label is "ライブTV".

The internal identifier would not need to change.

Could you also confirm whether these labels are controlled by the current Weblate resources or require changes to the Emby Web UI itself?

I understand that translation updates and application releases may follow different schedules.

I have attached three annotated screenshots documenting these findings.

I have excluded issues already covered in my previous reports to avoid duplication.

Thank you again for your support and for the recent improvements to Japanese localization.

Best regards,

Update: Confirmed Japanese Localization Improvements

I would also like to document several improvements that have already been made, so that other users and translators can distinguish resolved issues from those still under investigation.

1. Open Subtitles — Resolved

After updating the Open Subtitles plugin to version 1.0.70.0, I confirmed that the revised Japanese translations are now displayed correctly.

The improvements include:

  • Username and password labels

  • Username guidance text, including the distinction between a username and an email address

  • Previously revised Japanese wording

The latest translations are now visible in the actual configuration page.

2. Cinema Intros — Resolved

I have also confirmed that the Japanese translations for the following settings are now displayed correctly:

  • PlayOnlySimilarTrailers

  • PlayOnlySimilarTrailersHelp

These strings were previously displayed in English despite having Japanese translations in Weblate.

This issue can now be considered resolved.

3. Transparent — Translation Resource Added

Following my earlier report, a new Transparent string appeared in the EmbyApps / Common component.

I have submitted the Japanese translation:

  • Transparent → 透明

This is a welcome improvement because the other color names are already localized.

The translation is registered in Weblate, but its inclusion in a subsequent Emby release still needs to be verified.

Thank you to the Emby team for incorporating these improvements.

I will continue checking the remaining issues in upcoming beta releases and update the relevant reports when fixes are confirmed.

Best regards,

  • Thanks 1

Hi,

I would like to consolidate my previous Japanese localization reports into a single status update, as the findings have been posted across several messages in this thread.

After updating Emby Server from 4.11.0.7 Beta to 4.11.0.8 Beta, I performed another localization check.

The current status is 3 resolved issues and 7 outstanding issues.

1. Confirmed Resolved Issues (3)

1. Open Subtitles — Resolved

After updating the Open Subtitles plugin to version 1.0.70.0, the previously missing Japanese translations are now displayed correctly, including the username and password labels and the username guidance text.

2. Cinema Intros — Resolved

The previously untranslated settings are now correctly displayed in Japanese:

  • PlayOnlySimilarTrailers

  • PlayOnlySimilarTrailersHelp

3. Transparent — Resolved in 4.11.0.8 Beta

Following my earlier report, a new Transparent translation resource was added to EmbyApps / Common.

I submitted the Japanese translation 「透明」 and have now confirmed that it is correctly displayed in the subtitle background color dropdown in 4.11.0.8 Beta.

Thank you for these improvements.

2. Outstanding Localization Issues (7)

The following issues remain unresolved in Emby Server 4.11.0.8 Beta.

1. Language selection dropdown

The language selection dropdown still does not consistently display language names in the expected localized form.

2. Keyboard and remote control help

Several keyboard and remote control instructions remain in English, even though other labels on the same page are localized.

This mixed-language behavior was previously confirmed in both Japanese and Simplified Chinese.

Examples:

  • F8: toggle mute

  • F9: volume down

  • PageUp: Next chapter in video

  • search/find: launch app search function

Could these remaining descriptions be exposed for translation?

3. DLNA settings

Japanese DLNA settings and descriptions remain in English despite the corresponding Japanese translations already being registered in Weblate under EmbyServer / DLNA.

The same settings are correctly localized in Simplified Chinese.

The issue persists in 4.11.0.8 Beta. I will also recheck it following the next DLNA plugin update.

4. User list sorting

The sorting interface in user management still displays Title, which is inappropriate when sorting users.

A context-specific resource key or label may be needed.

5. Live TV navigation label

The bottom navigation bar still displays Live TV in English, while the side navigation menu correctly displays 「ライブTV」.

The same feature therefore has inconsistent labels within the Web UI.

6. Scheduled tasks

Scheduled task names, categories, and descriptions remain in English, although the surrounding interface is localized.

The same behavior was previously observed in Simplified Chinese.

Examples:

  • Vacuum Database

  • Convert media

  • Transfer media

  • Download subtitles

  • Scan Metadata Folder

  • Refresh Guide

It remains unclear whether these strings are exposed to the localization system or supplied directly by the server in English.

7. Display settings — Untranslated dropdown options

Several dropdown options in the display settings remain in English, although the surrounding interface is localized.

Examples:

  • Dark / Light

  • Blue / Green / Pink / Purple / Red

The issue was also previously observed in Simplified Chinese.

Interestingly, ordinary color names are correctly localized in other parts of the interface, including the subtitle color settings.

This suggests inconsistent localization handling between different UI components.

I understand that named theme presets, such as Apple TV, Superman, and Windows Media Center, may intentionally retain their original names.

My concern is specifically with ordinary color names and Dark/Light options that remain untranslated.

Could these dropdown options be made available for localization?

3. Consolidated Status

Resolved: 3 issues

Outstanding: 7 issues

All currently exposed Japanese translation components show 100% translated status in Weblate.

The remaining issues may involve different underlying causes, including:

  • Missing or incorrect translation resource references

  • Localization resources not being included or loaded correctly

  • Strings not currently exposed for translation

  • Server-provided text that bypasses the normal localization system

I am not assuming that all seven issues share the same root cause.

Detailed screenshots and Japanese/Simplified Chinese comparisons have already been provided in my earlier posts in this thread.

This consolidated report is intended to provide a clear reference for the current status, avoid duplicate investigations, and make it easier to track improvements in future releases.

I will continue checking upcoming beta releases and relevant plugin updates.

Thank you again to the Emby team for the improvements already made.

Best regards,

Title: Cinema Intros sidebar label remains in English despite Japanese translation in Weblate

Hi Emby Team,

I found another localization inconsistency involving the Cinema Intros plugin.

Environment

  • Emby Server: 4.11.0.8 Beta
  • Client: Safari on iOS
  • UI languages tested: Japanese (ja-JP) and Simplified Chinese (zh-CN)

Issue

The Cinema Intros settings page is now correctly localized into Japanese, including the previously untranslated settings.

However, the navigation sidebar still displays “Cinema Intros” in English.

A potentially relevant Japanese translation already exists in Weblate:

  • Component: EmbyServer / CinemaMode
  • Key: TabCinemaMode
  • English source: Cinema Intros
  • Japanese translation: シネマイントロ
  • Translation status: 100% translated

Expected: The sidebar displays シネマイントロ when Japanese is selected.

Actual: The sidebar continues to display Cinema Intros.

Additional finding: Simplified Chinese

I also tested the interface in Simplified Chinese (zh-CN).

The surrounding sidebar labels are correctly localized into Simplified Chinese, but “Cinema Intros” remains in English.

This suggests that the issue may not be specific to the Japanese translation.

Request

Could you please check whether the sidebar uses the TabCinemaMode localization resource, or whether the plugin’s display name is loaded separately?

I understand that plugin display names may be handled differently from other UI strings, so I would appreciate clarification if this behavior is intentional.

The previously reported untranslated Cinema Intros settings are now resolved. This report concerns only the sidebar label.

I have attached screenshots showing:

  1. The Japanese sidebar displaying “Cinema Intros”
  2. The Simplified Chinese sidebar displaying “Cinema Intros”
  3. The existing Japanese translation in Weblate

Thank you again for your continued support and the recent localization improvements!

Best regards,
