so for whatever reason, my Roku will not play AVI files from Emby server.  I've solved that for my permanent library by moving everything to MKV, but a lot of times there is something I only plan to watch once and delete, so running through handbrake is a pain.

How do i force Emby server to transcode any AVI files when Roku client is used?  I've looked, I just can't seem to find the answer.

If it's only the container that is the problem, and you just need it to be MKV, use mkvtoolnix to remux it. Very quick and easy.

But the server should transcode it, automatically. Otherwise you can lower your bitrate in the Roku app, to lower than the bitrate of the media, and the server will transcode it.

i get a green progress bar and it says retrieving.  then it resets and shows progress bar again.  then i get Video Error: Malformed Data.   It only happens when I try to play an AVI on Roku. Using MKVToolNix to create an MKV from the AVI results in a file that will play, but it's very jerky.  Like it's stuttering.

I've had this issue for a long time, across many different AVI's from various sources.

thanks

Can you try the app mentioned in this thead. This app can control the playback method. You can choose: "Force Direct", "Force Transcode", and "Force Transcode w/o streamcopy". Keep in mind the app will use fallback transcoding when errors occur even if you force direct, but when using fallback transcoding will always use streamcopy. To force transcoding without stream copy you have to do it manually. One of these methods should play your file correctly. Please try with this app and see if you notice a different behavior. AVI is known as not playable by _ANY_ roku model in the profile, but it might be trying to stream copy something it shouldn't be. Please try to "force transcode w/o stream copy" as the first method used. To change method on an items detail screen, click the "More ..." button. On this screen, choose the force method desired. Now play the item and it will play using your chosen method. Hope this explains enough. :)

I'd be very interested in getting a sample of one of these to test.  You can dropbox and PM me a link.

Thanks.
