Kodi and Live TV

Hey All

Huge fan of Openelec/Kodi/Emby integration.

I'm currently struggling with my LiveTV setup and just wondering what others are doing? Here's my current state:

#PC1 - Main Loungeroom - Existing HTPC running WMC 7.0 and ServerWMC via HDHRs. Storing recorded TV. Physical household antenna connection. A few TB of local storage

#PC2 - Kitchen Living Area - Intel NUC running Openelec Kodi. Runs SWMC TV Client. No local storage

#PC3 - Garage - Running Windows Server. Hosts all media and Emby server with Lots of storage. Always on.

Ideally I'd like to move PC1 to Win10 and run Emby theatre and or Kodi. Win10 for netflix viewing with 5.1 sound. The goal is centralised LiveTV and recorded TV.

I have played with TVheadend previously but with mixed results and keep going back to WMC for LiveTV management / recording.

More recently I've played with Emby LiveTV and it looks promising but the challenge seems to be making it integrate nicely into Kodi like other TV PVR Clients. The solution needs to be similar across platforms. I like the Emby approach as this means mobile devices now also have ability to access Live TV functions.

The logical choice seems to be using PC3 as it's always on and has current emby media also. Potentially I could just stick with WMC and virtualise a box on the server.

Wondering if anyone else is running similar or has suggestions?

I was a long, long time WMC user.

I moved to Emby about a year ago, for the most part I am very pleased with it. I do not have any DRM requirements to worry about fortunately.

Been using Kodi since V9. Love it. I was never a live TV viewer with WMC, just wasn't something we were into. Recently I setup live TV in Kodi mostly for time shifting and one off type recordings. Tried a few different PVR clients and settled on

NextPVR. Like most Kodi PVR clients it requires a back end to go with it. Setup on the back end is a little time consuming and does require a schedules direct (or similar subscription) for guide data. It has been running flawlessly since day 1. Front end setup on Kodi was simple - but if you really want to do it right IMO you need to edit your channel lists/names/logos. Tuning channels for me is just like we are used to tunes immediately, plays nearly instantly slight pause for buffering.

The server/HTPC handling all of this is a fairly high end Windows 7 Pro x64.

I am really looking forward to dumping Kodi - for simplicity sake as it can be a beast to tame for some. Can't make that jump yet Emby Live TV isn't quite ready, though I look forward to making the jump when it is ready.

There has been some chatter about an Emby PVR client for Kodi which if it comes to fruition would be great for simplicity sake.

Anyways that's my experience. If you go the NextPVR route in Kodi, I can give you some pointers on increasing your time shifting buffer and how that all works.

Thanks for the reply. I think I will try NextPVR as interim. I agree that Emby PVR client would be ideal. I really like Emby's recorded TV compression.

I will give NextPVR a test as this would be a simple (I hope) install onto my server. Open to your assistance on Kodi setup :-)

Luke -Nice work any ETA for alpha test?

Are you able to put Win7 in a VM on your updated Win10 system (if you have a license to use). I'm running things that way to keep WMC and it works great.

No eta yet. It'll be a bit. I'm sure Luke will make an announcement when the time for testing comes around.

I have installed a test installation with Emby for Kodi.

Unfortunately, the VU+/Enigma plugin doesn't work anymore.

at the start it only means that it could not be loaded.

Is there a possibility of coexistence here?

The VU+ plugin is really very good and I don't want to miss it...

You should start another post for this problem and follow the instructions in 'How to Report a Problem':

Any hint, when this is gonna come? Emby as a PVR would be great. As there is almost no other backend so easely integrates transcoding of LiveTV with support for hardware acceleration as Emby does on Windows. Clients like the FireTV not capable of hardware deinterlacing would really profit of that. I know there is a EmbyClient on the FireTV, but newer got LiveTV working there properly if not direct playing. So +1 from my side

Or is it possible to have an m3u file from emby for the channels? I mean with URLs which will deliver. transcoded stream?
