Black Levels - madVR

In setting in ET there is a place to set black levels 16-235 or 0-255 with madVR.

In madVR settings itself there is a place to set black levels 16-235 or 0-255.

Does one of these override the other or are the somehow connected? What would be the preferred setting for either/both of them targeting an OLED TV?

While playing, if you adjust the black level in madVR, those settings will apply. But each time you start Theater, it will obey the setting you make in Theater. You should make sure you adjust your GPU adapter, correctly, too. You can look through this guide, to better understand. The version of madVR in the guide, is older. Some of the settings are different, now.

I had always used option 2 with madVR and MPC-HC.

madVR – RGB Limited (16-235)

GPU – RGB Full (0-255)

Display – RGB Limited (16-235)

But during playback with ET's built in player, I noticed the madVR setting was showing 0-255 so I changed it to 16-235 (not realizing the ET setting was overriding it) and of course 1-15 started showing up on test patterns. I was only getting close to the correct black levels if madVR settings were left at 0-255. None of it made sense until I remember the ET setting also.

So, I guess it is just best to leave 0-255 in madVR settings and rely that the 16-235 in ET settings is actually what's happening. At least it makes sense now on my test patterns.

I was having so trouble getting it right, but the issue was with my TV settings. I needed to set my tv to standard color settings. Once I did that, I could play with the GPU adapter and ET settings to get it pretty much perfect.
