IMDB ratings (again) ... how do we update them?

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

I am getting IMDB ratings via the OMDB scraper. However, many times the actual imdb.com rating changes after I added the movie in my own database and the only way to update it is to manually go to the metadata manager, navigate to the movie and refresh all its details. I have movies that received over 20,000 new votres after adding them in the database and the rating itself that I have is outdated and different.

Is there a way to update just the IMDB ratings of all movies and TV shows in my database more seamlessly, without rescraping everything, of course?

EDIT: It's also annoying that OMDB itself is refreshing imdb ratings very slowly (or stops after a while). For example, the movie "Ben-Hur (2016)" has 16,000+ votes on imdb.com, but OMDB's rating says 11,000 votes (presumably when it last updated it .. which must have been at least a few weeks ago).

OMDB is illicitly scraping the IMDB database. They don't actually have permission to use the data as far as I am aware. IMDB charges 10s of thousands of Dollars per year to use their data.  This will cause synchronization issues. To be the most accurate, you would probably have to manually refresh the metadata periodically or update them by hand.

I'm well aware of all the past debates about scraping imdb.com and I don't want to get into that because that's not what I asked ... I asked about a method to refresh the ratings from OMDB (not from imdb.com) since OMDB itself does update them after I scrape it, just very slowly, but Emby never refreshes it once it writes it (as far as I noticed).

DEVS: Would it please be possible to add a scheduled task that refreshes ratings from OMDB, say, every 2 days?

There is a default task to refresh people that runs every 7 days (168 hours), which is more costy in terms of bandwidth and remote servive load). I'd rather have one for ratings instead.

p.s. In case it helps anything, I'm one of your paying customers :)

Not my software and I have no customers.

After the initial creation of the metadata, it doesn't update. You have to tell the system to refresh manually in the metadata editor.

And he asks for an automation (e.g. weekly) just for the ratings part. Imo a nice idea basically.

@@alexr Perhaps you should open a feature request in the appropriate section https://emby.media/community/index.php?/forum/98-feature-requests/

I wasn't able to find a feature request by that user. I found this one though - is this the one you meant?

@Koleckai: I would have thought it's clear I was addressing the devs and that you are not one of them, but hang in there, you might get customers too one day.

I think you got the wrong end of the stick here (and you may want to heed your own advice). For what it's worth, I was telling the devs that I'm one of their customers, and an alpha tester replied saying it's not his software and he has no customers ... the reply which you quoted was meant to say I wish him all the best in the future to perhaps become one of the devs and get customers too. I can see how it can be interpreted as sarcasm, but that wasn't my intention. You might want to go easier on the insults though.

It not the exact same feature request;i agree that metadata needs to be periodically refreshed when its not locked..

The other day i performed some library tidying based of tv shows scripted against 'status'='ended' only to realise later that id wasted 24hrs because emby wasnt keeping its metadata up to date.

You can use the meta data manager to refresh the library but this is quite wasteful as everything is enumerated (but at least that would include your omdb use case i believe) with no regard to when the object's meta data was last checked.

Everyone who posts here is a customer..... you simply are not special, the sooner you realize that, the better off you will be.  The most support you will get here is from fellow enthusiasts, especially when it comes to trying to get FR's become a reality.  If it's just you asking, good luck.

As for heeding my own advice, let's take a look at reputation points, and how I have helped people on this forum.  You have done what?  I mean right now you are known as the guy who posted this:

How this says "I wish him all the best in the future to perhaps become one of the devs and get customers too." is really beyond me.

Smh.  Good luck with your FR.

It isn't really a big deal. We were both snarky.

I actually said "paying customer" of said devs, as in I paid money to buy software produced by the devs whom I was addressing - and whose status I was wishing onto @Koleckai, i.e. was wishing him to go from alpha tester to dev with paying customers (wasn't trying to be sarcastic).

By heeding your own advice I was referring to jumping the gun offending others ... but this discussion is turning surreal and I don't think it's worth pushing it further.

We are all paying customers.  Non-paying customers get nothing but the web-client, or the Kodi plugin.

What is so bizarre about this conversation?  You acted like as asshat and I called you out on it.   And I noted that you, as a paying customer, shouldn't feel special.  We are all customers.

Technically speaking, we are not all paying customers. Non-paying customers get the Emby server (just not the premium). I was a non-paying customer before purchasing the Premium and also the paid Android app. The Emby server was the subject of the discussion. I mentioned I'm a paying customer just in case it helps as an incentive since I was asking for a new feature (I write software myself and give priority to paying customers). Nothing wrong with that.

Non-technically speaking, I have zero problems apologising when I'm in the wrong, but despite your persistence to that effect, and your continued insults, I don't think that's the case here, nor did I wish to offend Koleckai (quite the contrary, as I explained, twice).

But feel free to continue if you don't see anything bizarre.

alexr I apologize for your experience here thus far.

If anyone else has something constructive to add to the original question, feel free.  Otherwise, its time to keep it to yourself.  Thanks.

Too be expected I guess.

I have something to add, perhaps we fix some of the other issues before we look at this FR?

How about you stop spreading mis-information on things about which you have no knowledge.

The vast majority of Emby users still use the system completely for free and many more (including yourself) are using the system for having contributed as little as $10 years ago.  However, whether you are using for free or have purchased Premiere through any means does not affect the level of support we provide.

Also, please pay attention to the rules of this forum and treat other members with respect.

I am locking this thread because there is already a valid feature request for this issue where it can be tracked.
