Path substitutions

I would like to use Path substitutions but with webdav like

Local path : C:\Multimedia\Movies

Path substitution : davs://xxx.ddns.net/Movies

Do you have a issue to do that? Cause I don't want to use smb over internet.

Thanks

or SFTP will be ok too

So I perform some try and this is what I discovered :

  • If I want to use path substitution, I have to set Playback mode on Native (Direct Paths) on Kodi.
  • I didn't find how to use another option than SMB or Local link as Library Folder or path substitution.
  • I didn't find how to add network credentials if my Library Folder is on LAN.
  • If I use path substitution and Native (Direct Paths), Kodi don't put watched status.

I'm looking for a issue to my direct play problem. I'm using strm file and I don't want to pass across my server to playback. Any ideas ?

  • Expected
  • Alternate protocols not supported
  • You do this within the playback app, such as Emby for Kodi

"You do this within the playback app, such as Emby for Kodi"

So the Emby server have to access to the folder without authentication? Only playback app are able to access with authentication ?

Thanks

No, Emby Server currently does not support entering credentials for access, so you  just need to make sure the entire process has access.

Ok thank you for the answer,

So I'll wait the Angelblue answer about the watched status using path substitutions and why not the resume :)

Smb path substitution is to access your content locally. It is not used remotely, everything remote is accessed via your server address.

You will need to reset your database in Kodi by launching the add-on - if you set to native, this means we insert direct paths to your content. For path substitution to be applied, the database needs to be recreated. I'm not sure about the watch status, I use native playback mode on my test machine and everything works correctly.

I did the reset database, If i put the watched status manually, he's correctly sync to the server.

So on you're test machine, the watched status is correctly put after watched the movie?

When you're using path substitution, the server don't know you're playing somehting. right? (nothing on the dashboard).

Which version of Kodi are you running?

The watch status will work if Emby has a runtime for the item you are playing. Otherwise weird things happen. Can you post your Kodi log of you trying to playback? http://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/17599-how-to-report-a-problem/

No, path substitution is only so the client you are using is able to locate your files directly without server intervention (we ask for you to do this because local paths will not works if the content is not where Kodi is located). It should still show in the dashboard however, because we monitor playback of emby items.

Ok ok so it's cause I'm using strm file :)

Really need a improvement about strm files....

Indeed, that would explain the watch status weirdness - I'm not sure why it's not reporting on dashboard though... I haven't tested strm/native playback mode. Did it work if you used add-on instead of native playback?

Yes with the addon it's reported on the dashboard.

Interesting - it must be because using native playback mode, we are unable to associate which emby item is actually playing since Kodi probably reports the strm url rather than the file containing it.

Indeed - strm support is pretty basic. I have confidence it will be addressed at some point. Until then, maybe keep your strm files separated? and add them directly to Kodi rather than letting Emby handle them. Or is your entire library made up of strm files?

My only reason to use strm file was to not overload the server by sending the video to the user but I was wrong, with my actual configuration the server download the video via the strm and upload to the user... This is why I'm try to use path substitution

8500+ strm file into my library ^^

nothing else

There's no overload as long as the content is not being transcoded (modified on the fly).

If you use path substitution, it is to make your content accessible directly (locally). But honestly, you could make your server provide the file via http and you would not see much usage on your server either, because the file is not being modified. So there's no reason for strm files.

In Kodi, the only way to transcode is if you degrade the video quality to make up for the bandwidth available (in the add-on settings > playback). So even if the user is remote, but has decent internet - they can play the file over http, without straining your server - as long as the file is played as-is/not transcode.

I hope this sends you in the right direction. :)

The best way will be when the server is a strm file instead downloading and uploading the whole movie, if he will be able to just send the http link to kodi and kodi direct play the http file.

you know that i mean?

Cause all my users are friends so they are remotly. And in switzerland, internet connection at home are different debit like 250Mbit's down/25Mbit/s up. I need a stronger connection :)

What is containing in your strm files? Can you give an example?

I don't know how dynamic url works - but wouldn't there be a way for killride to get this working other than using strm files?

Posted

what's the problem exactly?

Posted

Something like a checkable option to force the server to send the http link directly to kodi and kodi will play this like a network flow on VLC

Ok, we don't have that right now. Perhaps in the future. In the meantime, they could just read the contents of the file client-side.
