Issues with Emby on Roku 3

Hi all,

Since there is no profile for my Sharp Aquos tv yet, I decided to purchased a Roku 3 to see if it's better than DLNA.

Emby looks nice on Roku 3.

However there a some issues that I encountered.

Note: all my videos are in MP4.

1. The playlist is play, but it doesn't show the video titles at all, only two options that are showing are: Play, More...

The playlist has six videos in there. There is no problem on the mobile device or Google Chrome.

2.  Some videos are not added to the playlist via Emby app on iOS.

    Don't know why.

3.  There is no "Media Type" icon like on the browser to choose, Music, Videos... but expanded.

      It's hard to navigate.

4. My movies' external subtitles are not showing despite that I'm enabled in the movie before it played.

I've tested with two different users' profile.

Thanks.

1. Indeed, it is a playlist. You expected an interim screen allowing you to choose which of the items in the playlist you wanted to play? If you use the blue neon app on your roku when using playlists and choosing play it will let you play in-order or shuffle from the continuous play dialog.

2. Is this an IOS issue? Doesnt sound related to the roku. The official app would crash on unplayable videos. The blue neon app has intelligence to skip unplayable items out of the context lists. A playlist is merely a context list.

3. What do you mean? You mean when navigate to music there is no music videos? This is because the roku cannot mix types this freely. The interface seperates these at the library level. You can choose music or music videos seperately they cant be mixed in the library. Can you post a picture of the TV screen to show what you mean? How is it hard to navigate? Did you disable viewstyles?

4. Did you press * during playback? Then enable captions. The way subtitles work on the roku is they are sent as closed captions.

Here is the thread for the blue neon emby app for roku:

In this thread you can see requests others have made, and how these features work.

1. Yes, that's what I meant.

2. The video is added in Emby app, but it didn't add to the Roku.

3.  I'm missing something, only my Movie folders have the neon option along with it's Library.

The rest aren't show as a Library, but in thumbnails.

4. Yes, I went into the 'Audio & Subtitle' to turn on the subtitle.

Coming soon to a blue neon app near you..

#2 Odd. Does the same thing happen on the blue neon app? Are all the items in the playlist the type "video"?

#3 the roku does do this. Please enable view styles and enhanced presentation for your user on the server.

#4 when playback starts and the video is playing, press * on the remote. At this time enable captions, then pick a subtitle to play. You should only use the audio & subtitle menu before playing if you have problems. Otherwise always just play the video, press * and enable captions and pick your subtitle.

Ok, I just added the blue-neon app, and it gave me the Library view for my music along with Movies, the rest for my personal videos, photos, and other videos library aren't.

This neon app has more options than the regular Emby.

So, the 'View Playlist Items' feature is coming soon?

#3 Are you prefer to "My Views " in Home Screen Settings ?

Yes, the view playlist items feature will be released today, likely in the next hour or so, I am finishing up on it as we speak.

The app does have more options and features than the official. This is because as a forum member, you gain cool little perks. One of those perks is finding out about this other app. So welcome to the forum and enjoy your stay. :)

That's awesome!

I still need some help.

1. My credentials doesn't save in the Emby Blue Night.

2. I changed my music videos categorized as 'Mixed Content', but it still doesn't give the "highlighted options".

     See the attachment.

3. For the subtitles to work, I had to enable before hand , and turn on the Caption Mode ON during the movie is playing.

Shouldn't turn on subtitle is sufficent?

Thanks.

Are you login with emby connect, or manually?

If manually, you can force it to remember, in preferences make sure the "remember user" is enabled. If it is, sign out, and choose your same user again. Now press the home button on the remote. Now open the app again, it should say "welcome back" and remember you.

Ok, let me try that.

The playlist is not auto-refresh; I have to exit out from the items playlist, and go back in.

Is this right?

Yes. It isnt actually running in sync with the base screen which would allow refreshing. That would require more work, and making a new type to allow the viewcontroller to control the screens entirely independently. This would require a custom roscreen and these are very labor intensive.

This same shortcoming affects the trailers, special features, and additonal parts screens. The episodic landscape these use is unable to tie into the base screen. Episodic layout is not supported as a gridscreen which the base screen requires. So this also affects the tv-series season/episode screen. I like how the episodic landscape layout looks despite this shortcoming.

Gotcha.

I don't see the option to add the media to the playlist in Roku.

Yeah, this isnt possible. Nor is it possible to modify audio playlists. You can create instant playlists from recently played, frequently played, favorite tracks, and artists/albums. But...there is no way to pick tracks and build a custom playlist. As you noticed there is no way for video either. Eventually this can be looked at though. A new button "add to playlist..." created. It is just a question of where to put that button. Most button menus as you can tell are jam packed as full as they can get already. Eventually this can happen when I have the time. Make sure to read through the entire blue neon thread to learn everything you can do. That thread is all the documentation there is.

Ok. I figured since we have the playlist option, it would make sense to add the media directly from Roku instead use a phone or a computer to add or remove items to the playlist.

Thanks for the help guys.

I wish it were that easy to do it. The view playlist items screen, for the most part was already written, which is why it was so quick and simple to do. I just had to make new parameters, copy some code, and presto. To write the playlist add/delete would require it being a context menu item. Where you press * when on the item and up pops a dialog. In the dialog would be "Playlist..." button. Click on this it would allow "Add to, Delete from, and Create...". Then this would poll the server get the playlists, and if need be, show the list, or if create was chosen ask for the name to create. Now after doing that, you have to make sure that context menu didnt break the audio player context menu or the other context menus.

There are 3 separate layers of context menu. The gridscreen has its own. The poster screens have their own. The audioplayer has its own. There is a rudimentary detection in the poster screen to prevent the audioplayer from appearing when it shouldnt and vice versa. But there is also some detection based upon a screen functions existence or not that runs the gridscreen. All of these combined allow the * button to work for every screen type.

This is why I have to be precise and not mess up any of these interactions. It would suck every time you press * it spawns all three context menus, when you just wanted the audioplayer one. So making context menus is a bit more involved and keeping each of them from interacting with each other and making problems. This is why these are slower to evolve. Be patient and likely I will get bored one week and make it happen. :)
