cw-kid 192 Posted April 26, 2016 Posted April 26, 2016 (edited) Hi I'm on the latest Beta version. Should Emby Server create the extrafanart and extrathumbs folders under the artists folder on the file server ? Also should it add artist images for Folder / Fanart / Banner / Logo in to the artists directory on the file server ? If so this is not working for me and nothing gets added in to the artists folder. I just added a new artist "Prince" which I have never had on the system before. Looking in the Emby metadata manager for this artist he has been identified OK and had a MusicBrainz and AudioDB ID's listed and if I select edit images there are images shown. Actually I have just noticed a path at the top: C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Roaming\MediaBrowser-Server\metadata\artists\Prince If I look at this path on the server all the images I was expecting for "Prince" are stored in here instead in a Prince sub-folder. How do I stop this ? I wanted the images in the artists folder where the mp3 files are e.g. Network Path is: \\whs\Music\Prince Local Path on the file server is: D:\ServerFolders\Music\Prince I have only just realised this, but now I have two lots of music artists images. Native Kodi as I had it setup previously, put all these artists images in to each of the artists folders in the music share where the music files are located. Now Emby server has create a new artist folder list under C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Roaming\MediaBrowser-Server\metadata\artists What to do? Thanks Edited April 26, 2016 by cw-kid
cw-kid 192 Posted April 26, 2016 Author Posted April 26, 2016 (edited) Actually looking in the C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Roaming\MediaBrowser-Server\metadata\artists folder at all the artists folders listed in here, I do no know most of them, the vast majority don't appear to be my album artists. Also clicking in to these folders most seem to just have one artist.nfo file and no artwork images. Very confused now ! Edited April 26, 2016 by cw-kid
cw-kid 192 Posted April 26, 2016 Author Posted April 26, 2016 If I look at the server settings for Metadata and select Music Artists the images settings look like this:
cw-kid 192 Posted April 26, 2016 Author Posted April 26, 2016 (edited) This is how an old existing artists folder looks like on the file server You can see the album folders that contain the MP3 files and also the extrafanart / extrathumbs folders and the artists images fanart.jpg / folder.jpg / landscape.jpg / logo.jpg etc This is how the new Prince artist folder looks like there are no artist images been place in here. If I look in the newly discovered folder: C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Roaming\MediaBrowser-Server\metadata\artists\Prince Then Princes artwork images are in here instead. Edited April 26, 2016 by cw-kid
cw-kid 192 Posted April 26, 2016 Author Posted April 26, 2016 And here is a section of the artists sub-folders I can see in the folder: C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Roaming\MediaBrowser-Server\metadata\artists As I said I don't know most of these artists. Artists off compilation albums maybe? Most of my main Album Artists don't appear to even be listed in here.
cw-kid 192 Posted April 26, 2016 Author Posted April 26, 2016 (edited) I am still using native Kodi with MySQL on my live HTPC's and native Kodi expects the music artists images to be in the actual artists folder of the main music share. Also other devices also would get the artwork files from the same network location, having them hidden away on a the local C: drive of the file server means these artwork files are not available for other none Emby devices / clients. Edited April 26, 2016 by cw-kid
cw-kid 192 Posted April 26, 2016 Author Posted April 26, 2016 (edited) I just manually copied all the Emby generated artwork files for this artist from: C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Roaming\MediaBrowser-Server\metadata\artists\Prince to D:\ServerFolders\Music\Prince AKA \\whs\Music\Prince and now native Kodi has just displayed the artist folder and fanart image, before these were blank / missing. I guess this is a temporary work around. Edited April 26, 2016 by cw-kid
cw-kid 192 Posted April 26, 2016 Author Posted April 26, 2016 There is another second problem as well with metadata. I added another new artist today called "Hana Pestle" Emby server didn't seem to identify her initially, so in the metadata manager I manually added her AudioDB and MusicBrainz ID's. Then eventually in the Emby web GUI she had metadata showing. However in native Kodi her bio and other details were all missing, refreshing the artist in native Kodi would not fix the problem. I then removed the Emby generated artist.nfo file from the \\WHS\Music\Hana Pestle folder and refreshed her again in native Kodi, instantly all the metadata appeared presumably scraped from the web via the Kodi Universal Artist Scraper. Here is the contents of the Emby generated artist.nfo file. Obviously something about it that native Kodi does not like. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" standalone="yes"?> <artist> <biography /> <outline /> <lockdata>false</lockdata> <dateadded>2016-04-26 17:47:10</dateadded> <title>HANA</title> <enddate>2016-04-26</enddate> <genre>Dream Pop</genre> <audiodbartistid>115861</audiodbartistid> <musicbrainzartistid>6b9eaa19-e4a3-4f6a-a58a-d5d0e7d56f08</musicbrainzartistid> <disbanded>2016-04-26</disbanded> <album> <title>HANA EP</title> <year>2016</year> </album> </artist> I've seen a similar issue before here with Movies and the XVID / DIVX flags, the Emby generated nfo files for these types of movies breaks the media flags in native Kodi and they do not appear as a result, this was never resolved and is still a problem. Thanks
cw-kid 192 Posted April 26, 2016 Author Posted April 26, 2016 Here is the Emby generated nfo file for the Prince artist. This one did seem to work OK and I did not have any issues in native Kodi with it showing his metadata. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" standalone="yes"?> <artist> <biography>Prince (born Prince Rogers Nelson; June 7, 1958) is an American singer, songwriter, musician, and actor. cw-kid 192 Posted April 26, 2016 Author Posted April 26, 2016 Here is the "Hana Pestle" artist in the metadata manager you can see there is metadata like the overview / bio. But it does not seem to be writing it to the artist.nfo file for some reason? Even after deleting the nfo file and refreshing the artist in the metadata manager and it creating a new artist.nfo file. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" standalone="yes"?> <artist> <biography /> <outline /> <lockdata>false</lockdata> <dateadded>2016-04-26 17:47:10</dateadded> <title>HANA</title> <enddate>2016-04-26</enddate> <genre>Dream Pop</genre> <audiodbartistid>115861</audiodbartistid> <musicbrainzartistid>6b9eaa19-e4a3-4f6a-a58a-d5d0e7d56f08</musicbrainzartistid> <disbanded>2016-04-26</disbanded> <album> <title>HANA EP</title> <year>2016</year> </album> </artist>
Luke 42078 Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 Make sure you enable saving metadata to media folders. Artist metadata goes in the artist folder if an artist folder is found, otherwise it goes to the metadata folder.

The setting "Save artwork and metadata into media folders" is already turned on and has always been turned on. Cheers
Luke 42078 Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 See if it happens again on a brand newly added artist that does not have any existing metadata
cw-kid 192 Posted April 27, 2016 Author Posted April 27, 2016 See if it happens again on a brand newly added artist that does not have any existing metadata Need to think of one LOL. Does that include artists who might be on compilation albums or just album artists I haven't got ?
Luke 42078 Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 artists on compilation albums will always go to the metadata folder, so that is expected behavior. what i mean is an actual album artist where you have a folder for that artist.

OK will do and will report back. Only other thing I did in a hope it might help, was uncheck the "Save artwork and metadata into media folders" setting and save and then recheck it and saved again. Cheers
cw-kid 192 Posted April 27, 2016 Author Posted April 27, 2016 (edited) Luke OK I added a new Album Artist "Lana Del Rey", I checked she was listed on TheAudioDB and Musicbrainz first which she was. I then checked all the tags in MP3TAG were correct and then I moved the mp3 files in to a new Artist\Album folder on the file server. Emby server then starting popping up notifications about adding new songs. I then looked in the Emby web GUI and I can see its added the new Artist and Album. However the new artist has no artist image and no metadata. If I edit the artist and look for the AudioDB and Musicbrainz ID's there are none listed. Also the path at the top of the edit artist page is local on the server C: drive again: C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Roaming\MediaBrowser-Server\metadata\artists\Lana Del Rey Although strangely if I actually look for that "Lana Del Rey" folder on the server C: drive its not visible. There are no artwork files either in the media path: \\whs\Music\Lana Del Rey. The album "Born to Die" is showing a cover in the Emby web GUI, but one was embedded in to the MP3 files. Something not quite working it seems. This is the same as happened for artist "Hana Pestle" yesterday and I had to manually put in her ID's. Thanks Edited April 27, 2016 by cw-kid
cw-kid 192 Posted April 27, 2016 Author Posted April 27, 2016 (edited) This is the artist.nfo file that Emby created in the artists folder. \\whs\Music\Lana Del Rey <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" standalone="yes"?> <artist> <biography /> <outline /> <lockdata>false</lockdata> <dateadded>2016-04-27 19:26:06</dateadded> <title>Lana Del Rey</title> <genre>Dream Pop</genre> <album> <title>Born to Die</title> </album> </artist> Looking in the album folder \\whs\Music\Lana Del Rey\Born to Die There is a folder.jpg in there now, I did not put that there. Its 600x600. The image I embedded in to the MP3 files was 1000x1000 in size. There is also a album.nfo <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" standalone="yes"?> <album> <review /> <outline /> <lockdata>false</lockdata> <dateadded>2016-04-27 19:26:26</dateadded> <title>Born to Die</title> <year>2012</year> <enddate>2016-04-27</enddate> <genre>Dream Pop</genre> <artist>Lana Del Rey</artist> <albumartist>Lana Del Rey</albumartist> <track> <position>1</position> <title>Born to Die</title> <duration>04:46</duration> </track> <track> <position>2</position> <title>Off to the Races</title> <duration>04:59</duration> </track> <track> <position>3</position> <title>Blue Jeans</title> <duration>03:29</duration> </track> <track> <position>4</position> <title>Video Games</title> <duration>04:41</duration> </track> <track> <position>5</position> <title>Diet Mountain Dew</title> <duration>03:42</duration> </track> <track> <position>6</position> <title>National Anthem</title> <duration>03:50</duration> </track> <track> <position>7</position> <title>Dark Paradise</title> <duration>04:03</duration> </track> <track> <position>8</position> <title>Radio</title> <duration>03:34</duration> </track> <track> <position>9</position> <title>Carmen</title> <duration>04:08</duration> </track> <track> <position>10</position> <title>Million Dollar Man</title> <duration>03:51</duration> </track> <track> <position>11</position> <title>Summertime Sadness</title> <duration>04:25</duration> </track> <track> <position>12</position> <title>This is What Makes Us Girls</title> <duration>04:00</duration> </track> <track> <position>13</position> <title>Without You</title> <duration>03:49</duration> </track> <track> <position>14</position> <title>Lolita</title> <duration>03:39</duration> </track> <track> <position>15</position> <title>Lucky Ones</title> <duration>03:47</duration> </track> </album> Edited April 27, 2016 by cw-kid
cw-kid 192 Posted April 27, 2016 Author Posted April 27, 2016 I am sure that this was all working at one point for me OK. I don't add new music artists that often, but I have added some since I started using Emby and don't recall having these issues before. I've just noticed a newer setting ? Its unchecked, think I should enable it. By default, most secondary images are only downloaded when requested by an Emby app. Enable this option to download all images in advance, as new media is imported
cw-kid 192 Posted April 27, 2016 Author Posted April 27, 2016 (edited) OK so I removed the "Lana Del Rey" folder from the music share on the server and I then ran a clean database task in Emby. Ensured she was gone from the library etc. I also deleted the nfo files and that folder.jpg image. I then moved the "Lana Del Rey" folder back into the music share on the server. Emby discovered the new content again and same deal as before artist has no image or metadata and no ID's are listed. And no artwork in the media folder apart from the one folder.jpg for the album cover. Edited April 27, 2016 by cw-kid
cw-kid 192 Posted April 27, 2016 Author Posted April 27, 2016 Could Path substitution have something to do with it ? When I first setup Emby, I used the Local paths of the D: (pool) drive on the WHS server and then mapped them to the UNC paths / shares in the Path substitution settings in Emby etc. Just a thought, it never seems to have caused an issue before. D:\ServerFolders\Music To \\WHS\Music
cw-kid 192 Posted April 29, 2016 Author Posted April 29, 2016 Hi So is this a bug? Anything else I can test? Thanks
sparkplug188 3 Posted November 10, 2016 Posted November 10, 2016 @@cw-kid This could be a bug. I am experiencing the exact same problem on Emby Server 3.1.6154.30191, Ubuntu Server 16.10. Here is a link to my thread: https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/41262-emby-not-saving-music-artist-metadata-to-media-folders/
cw-kid 192 Posted August 11, 2017 Author Posted August 11, 2017 (edited) Hi I am still having problems with adding new music artists and their metadata files not being stored where I want them ! I added a new artist called "Trisomie 21" initially I forgot what I think @@Luke said here previously about we need to add an artist.nfo flle in to the artists root folder, for Emby to then save the metadata / artwork in the artists folder rather than in the local metadata folder on the C: drive of the server. So the path for this artist when you select Edit Info in the Emby web GUI was: C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Roaming\MediaBrowser-Server\metadata\artists\Trisomie 21 So I removed the artists folder from my D:\Music folder to a temp location and Emby then removed the artist and its albums from the Emby library. I copied the now populated artist.nfo file from C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Roaming\MediaBrowser-Server\metadata\artists\Trisomie 21 to the artists folder in the temp location. I then deleted the Trisomie 21 folder in the C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Roaming\MediaBrowser-Server\metadata\artists path. I then moved the artists folder from the temp location back to D:\Music\Trisomie 21 Emby then re-detected the artist and its albums however the path is still: C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Roaming\MediaBrowser-Server\metadata\artists\Trisomie 21 When I select Edit Info on the artist in the web GUI. I really don't want artist metadata stored in this local path for album artists. For compilation album artists that is fine, but not for my main album artists. Thanks Edited August 11, 2017 by cw-kid
cw-kid 192 Posted August 11, 2017 Author Posted August 11, 2017 Also has the clean database task been removed from the server dashboard area ? As I could no longer see it. Thanks.
