sparkplug188 3 Posted November 10, 2016 Share Posted November 10, 2016 (edited) Emby Server Version: Version 3.1.6154.30191 Ubuntu Server Version 16.10 I have spent most of today trying to figure out why Emby will not save music artist metadata to the media folders. I have read every thread on this topic and tried everything I can think of. "Save artwork and metadata into media folders" is enabled Emby is running as the user that has read, write, and execute permissions on the media folders There don't appear to be any glaring errors or permissions problems, according to the log I completely removed Emby and all of it's files including the database, and started from a fresh install-- the problem persists The audio files are tagged correctly. This problem affects my entire collection of hundreds of artists and thousands of songs. The only work around I have found is manually copying the metadata out of /var/lib/emby-server/metadata/artists to the correct folder, delete the metadata from /var/lib/emby-server/metadata/artists, then trigger a scan. I have attached a screen capture of the folder permissions, Emby running as sparkplug188, and all of the relevant server settings. Here is a complete log of a library scan to add Blake Shelton to my library. Prior to this scan, these files have never been scanned by Emby. It is like the setting "Save artwork and metadata into media folders" is ignored when saving music artist metadata. This was not a problem the last time I used Emby some months ago. Emby Server Version 3.0.8500.0 Linux Mint 18 (Ubuntu 16.04) My media folders contained folder.jpg, fanart.jpg and logo.png files for each artist (many of which were custom). However, these were not used. All new artwork was downloaded during the scan to /var/lib/emby-server/metadata/artists. I manually copied the artist.nfo files from /var/lib/emby-server/metadata/artists to the media folders and did another fresh install. Afterwards, the artwork from the media folders was used and any changes are now saved to the media folders as expected. I do not currently have any new artists to add for testing but I suspect that for now it would be necessary to manually create an artist.nfo in the media folder prior to scanning. In other words, it appears that if an artist.nfo file is not present in the media folder during a scan then all new metadata and artwork is downloaded to /var/lib/emby-server/metadata/artists instead. If "artist.nfo" is present when the media is first scanned, music artist metadata is stored with the media. If it is missing, the metadata is stored in /var/lib/emby-server/metadata/artists. How do I submit this as a bug? The problem is that it is very difficult to determine if a folder is an artist folder, and when we choose wrong it leads to very unexpected results. In order to support mish-mash music naming conventions, this change was made recently. I am open to an opt-on option where you can specify that your folder structure is following the more strict artist/album/song layout, and in return for the strict structure you are granted this feature back. 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

However, if that would take too much time or resources to implement, this is simple alternative: Add this string of text to either the library settings page or the page in the screen capture below: "At minimum, an empty artist.nfo file must be present inside the artist folder in order to save music artist metadata inside the media folders." In my opinion, one of Emby's best features is the ability to store, update and maintain watch status metadata in the local media folder. This makes any future installations of Emby so much easier. So you guys are now saying an artist.nfo file must be present in the artists folder before the new mp3 files are scanned in to Emby ? Even if that is just a blank artist.nfo file? This will then force the Emby server to save the metadata and artwork files in to your artists folder ? Rather than locally on the C: drive of the server etc. This wasn't always the case as it use to work fine at one point in time. Think Luke says that above that a change was made. So my folder structure is the correct way of doing things as Luke calls it: "strict artist/album/song layout," So us guys need a new option to get the functionality back? To have the Emby server by default for us, to save the metadata and artwork files in to the artists folder where the mp3 files are located. However, this time adding an empty artist.nfo file to the artist folder does not convince Emby server that it should store the artist images and metadata in the media folders. In fact, I have about a dozen artist folders fully loaded with the correct artist.nfo files, folder,jpg, logo.jpg, and fanart.jpg that show up blank on the Emby web app. When I add an image to those problem artists using the web app, the image is stored in Emby server's metadata folder, not the media folders. Please advise. Is there some config file edit, database modification, or folder permissions restriction I can make that will force Emby server to store artist metadata in the media folders? Luke 37324 Posted January 17, 2019 Share Posted January 17, 2019 Right now this is expected behavior due to complication it was causing, and the fact that we need to solve more structural concerns before we add this. Default out of box does not save metadata this way. We need to be able to fully accommodate a mish-mash music folder structure, and we are almost there, but there is still more work to do. Once we get this done, then we can look at how we'll accomplish local metadata for artists, but admittedly, it's something that should never have been added before first getting this basic part done first. This is important to us because TV libraries have the exact same concerns. We need to be able to support a mish-mash there as well, but we obviously can' t go and remove local metadata support for Series or there will be mass uprising. Looking in my Album Artists view in the Music library, in the web GUI, I still have some problem artists, that are duplicated one is set to my path of: D:\ServerFolders\Music\10cc and the other instance of the artist is set to: C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Roaming\MediaBrowser-Server\metadata\artists\10CC Been messing about identifying the artists with the correct musicbrainz ID and artist name, refreshing metadata, removing albums out of the Music folder, rescan the music library, add albums back in and scan again etc. Deleting the artists metadata folder on the C: drive. But nothing I try seems to get rid of the duplicate artists. For all my album artists I don't want their metadata stored on the servers C: drive but want them stored in the artist / album folders on D: drive etc. Seems this is still problematic all these years later. My original thread on this problem was April 2016 here. I added an artist.nfo file in to the folder before moving it to its final location in my main music folder etc. The new album has appeared in Emby and if I edit the metadata I can the path is: \\whs\Music\Broods\Evergreen So that seems to still work. If I look in the new artists folder in: \\WHS\Music\Broods There are no metadata files. And stranger if in the Emby web GUI I edit the metadata on the artist rather than the album as I just did. There is no path displayed at all. Yet if I edit the metadata on an old artist a path is shown at the top. Then if I look in this folder on the server: C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Roaming\MediaBrowser-Server\metadata\artists I can not see a new "Broods" folder with the metadata in there either, so now I am confused. That brand new artist I added the other day, when playing it in native Kodi there was only one fanart image being displayed. I found the settings in the Emby server dashboard editing the music library you can specify in there what types of artwork it downloads and there was an option to increase the number of fanart, for music I set this from 1 to 10. I then manually downloaded more fanarts / background images for that artist via the Emby web GUI by editing images for that artist etc. But obviously these images were then not stored in my artists folder on the D:\ServerFolders\Music\{artist name} So native Kodi and any other none Emby clients can't use / display the artwork as it's not there. Been playing around with a new Kodi add-on called Artwork Beef might have to use that instead of Emby to download artwork images in to the artist folder. Artwork Downloader add-on for Kodi is now marked as broken in the repo, that was traditionally the add-on for grabbing artwork for Kodi. But when this did work previously obviously it was Emby that was used to grab and store the artwork files. Ideally Emby is the metadata manager and no other tools are needed. The folder names are id-driven now, not name based anymore.
