football games not showing up in correct order anymore

I have several american football games that I've recorded and archived. One of the major reasons I selected Emby for my media server, was the ability to manipulate custom metadata for my football games. I had them the way that I wanted, but a recent server update (3.0.5911.0) has seemed to throw things out of whack.

In metadata manager, i would set Name: Team vs. Team, then Sort Name: 2015 Week 01 Team vs. Team. With an entire season listed, Emby Classic would show a correct list under Season 2015 using the preferred Team vs. Team, because I personally didn't want the additional 2015 Week 01 showing up ... felt it too cluttered.

Today, I open Emby Classic only to find each season's list completely out of order, as well as out of order in metadata manager, even though the Name: and Sort Name: are correct. Has something changed in the server update that's caused it to not read Sort Name: correctly?

Edit** It appears that metadata manager is listing all the games in alphabetical order using Name: and ignoring Sort Name entirely. There a check mark somewhere that's been added that I need to uncheck or something?

Hi, in the server dashboard try running the clean database scheduled task.

Hi, in the server dashboard try running the clean database scheduled task.

Great! I'll give that a shot and report back. Thanks.

Edit ***  Ran a clean database within scheduled task to no avail. Problem still exists. Again, appears all the games within each season is listed alphabetically by the 1st team rather than following the preferred Sort Name configured in metadata manager, Thanks for lending a hand in figuring this one out.

As you see in the left pane, all the games for season 2015 are listed in alphabetical order. Over in the right pane it shows a particular game sort name as 2015 Week 11 49ers at Seahawks which would normally have it 11th in the list, but because it's going alphabetical, it has it as the first game.

The order of the games in the left pane is what shows up in Emby Classic.post-4298-0-42225100-1459411265_thumb.png

Before the recent server upgrade, the order would be 4 preseason games, then Week 01 - Week 17 then playoff games. The names that appear are correct, but would be ordered via the sort name which is now not being adhered to. Hope this makes sense. FYI, when using the android app or web client, the order was never correct. Only in Classic. It never concerned me with android and web, because I hardly ever streamed to devices that used those clients. Usually only watch the games on my Windows HTPC on the big screen with Classic.

By the way, is Emby Classic 3.0.299 becoming a premium app? It upgraded on my family room HTPC and now it's buffering and only playing 36 seconds of video files before closing out the video. Apparently, there's a bunch of changes going on and I'm not keeping up or something. On another pc with Emby Classic, but not the latest version, everything plays fine ... still has football games out of order though ... which I think is more of a server issue than a client issue  Resolved the 30 second playback limit problem by rejoining that troublesome pc back to the homegroup. Plays nicely again.

if it never was correct in the web client then i'm sorry but nothing has actually been broken.  this is probably some special sauce applied by EMC and I'm sorry about that, but it's only there to try and keep things a certain way for older MB2 users.

I really don't know what EMC was doing, but you've set these up as a TV library and episodes sort using season & episode numbers, not titles. So what i see are two options here - specify episode numbers OR change the library content type to plain home videos so that your custom sort names will be utilized.

I'm not sure how you determined that I'm using episode numbers. The above picture of metadata manager shows that info as blank. Metadata manager autofilled in the Season # on it's own. I'm using Name and Sort Name. I've actually had the football folder setup as Unset (mixed content). The metadata manager in the server used to list the games in the correct order using Sort Name.  The above picture with the left pane now shows all of them in alphabetical order by Name and isn't using Sort Name at all. What's the purpose of Sort Name if it doesn't sort?  Shouldn't Sort Name override Name if it's used? I believe this issue is with the server and not with EMC, though EMC was the only app I used that actually followed that I configured metadata manager to do.

Using episode numbers would probably solve the problem, but what it does is add a # and other dots and whatnot in front of each game in EMC which I don't want. I like how it looks in the above picture of EMC with each game listed, just wish it would go back to using sort name so it would list the games in their correct order. As you can see from above, even the preseason games are out of order ... they should be at the top of the list ... not the middle. Used to be but a server update recently has changed that. Don't think EMC would affect Metadata manager on the server.

Sorry, what i mean is, the fact that the above screenshot shows the episode and season numbers indicates to me that you've set it up as a TV library. episodes are sorted using the season and episode numbers, then by name, so now that i'm looking at it, we might be able to change that last part to by sort name.

Or manually input episode number instead of sort name.  Should give you the order you want.

Can I do that but then not necessarily have that info appear on EMC? Meaning ... I'm willing to use S2015e01 (or whatever you think would work) but still have it appear in EMC as 49ers at Seahawks only (but in it's correct ordered place?)

In TV shows, they put a 1. Name of Episode ... I just want the name of the "episode"

Case in point ... Preseason Broncos at Seahawks would have to named S15E01 (or actually it's the Seahawks 40-something'th season so s40E01) but it's not game 01 of the regular season which everyone calls the 1st game of the regular season Game 01. I don't want it to show in EMC or Emby Android as Game 01 Preseason Broncos at Seahawks, then later have the 1st game of the regular season show up as Game 05. Make sense?

Guess the reason I was liking the Sort Name option was it was doing the order how I liked it, but without all the additional numbers and info in name of the game showing up in EMC.

Here's an example of what I don't want to happen:

post-4298-0-06580700-1459459654_thumb.png

After put in a 1 in episode # in MM, it now puts a 1 - in front of the game in EMC. Blech!  :)

Yes it's in the correct order, but is there a way to hide the number so it won't appear in EMC or any other client?

Looks like Luke has already added this to the Dev server branch.

https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Emby/commits/dev

Great! :)

Are you suggesting I go to my server and switch over to dev rather than stable and let it install the dev version? Or should I be patient and wait until the next "stable" version of server to be posted?

And by adding it to the dev branch, does this mean the option to have it use sort name will return? I'm not a coder so I can't read the code and discern what Luke has done with sort name.

It looks like there is a database update in the dev cycle so if you do change there is no reverting back to stable without deleting databases.  I am testing your scenario when the database update is complete on a test machine.

Great! Thanks!  I'll look forward to what you find out. Appreciate your time in testing this out for me.

At least on dev release I didn't have an issue with your scenario "Unset (mixed content)".  I don't use EMC/WMC, but the web client listed everything by sort name.  Preseason games will need a sort name identifier to show them in the right order though.

Great! Does this mean that this code will be implemented in the next stable version when it becomes available? Seems lately, server has been getting frequent updates, so I'm willing to wait until the next server version update comes out. No hurry.

Thanks Luke & Happy2Play for looking into this and resolving my issue. Much appreciated! This type of "tech support" has me inching towards going Premium. Bear in mind, I've purchased single apps a few years ago before the changeover to Emby (Android & iOS). I've been considering it, but holding out to see how well ET turns out and if there's going to be more TV tuner support than just HDHomeRun.  I've got one, along with PCI/PCIe tuners (Avermedia M780, Hauppauge 1600 & Hauppauge 2250). I'd like to know/see if ET will play nice with them or not.  I really want to get off the WMC teat.

I've installed server 3.0.5912.0, run database cleanup and it appears to still not have resolved the issue. Is there something else I'm supposed to check to enable using Sort Name over Name?

Edit *** Nevermind, I went back and removed the folder and re-added it. Doing that seemed to have fixed it at the moment. It was set as Unset (mixed content) and I re-added it as Home Movies. Not sure I like that, but as long as it works. :)

Yours is different. the change i mentioned is not in the stable release. you'll need beta.

Well now that's odd. After installing the latest stable, then removing and adding the folder, while at the same time changing the content type from Unset to Home Videos, it seems to have cleared up the issue. In fact, my android Emby mobile app seems to have the games in the correct order now. Voodoo magic I guess.

No, it's not magic. Tv has different sorting rules than home videos. i already mentioned earlier on page 1 that home videos was an option

What are the differences between Unset (mixed content) and Home Movies content types?

Happy2Play

Home Movies will never look for metadata, Unset (mixed content) tries to determine the content type and use that metadata service.
