Update Install Fails

Trying to install the latest release on my server - 2012 R2. 

Following the same process as normal, but it fails almost immediately. I've opened the URL listed in the log in my browser and it loads OK with what looks like an XML manifest.

Hi Luke!  I'm experiencing the same error as the OP.  I tired the

rundll32 dfshim CleanOnlineAppCache
as an admin on the affected server, but to no avail. The 'setup.exe' that is downloaded is 420K in size, whereas all of the others have been 432K <shrugs>.  The host machine is also a Winblowz 2012 R2 (like the OP above) (fully patched through yesterday). I tried downloading from a Win10 (x64) machine but was greeted with the same result.  Thanks for all you guys do!

Same here as well.  I also tried cleaning out the appdata\local\temp folder, setting my emby service to manual start and rebooting (to try to ensure emby was not running) but same result.

Could this be from a Windows update or user hasn't disabled this feature?

WU is enabled for me. 

 

I do have the 4GB patch on though if that makes any difference?

I'm getting this same error on Windows 8.1 when trying to upgrade the stable release from 3.0.5786.0 to 3.0.5818. I have it running as a service, so i'm using setup.exe. I don't have the server version of windows so there is no IE Enhanced Security setting. I tried clearing the ClickOnce cache, but it didn't fix it. Suggestions?

Turning off IE Enhanced Security on the server did the trick, thanks!

i tried turning off Enhanced Protected Mode, didn't help. Never had this problem with the setup program before, have done dozens of upgrades in the past. Not sure why it is failing now.

Oh, man, I dug up an old thread without seeing this.  My bad.

 

I ran into the same issue and I can confirm that disabling IE Enhanced Security Configuration is what solved it.  This is also on Windows Server 2012 R2.

If that doesn't work, then just wait for it to appear via automatic updates.

 

Yeah i tried clearing the ClickOnce cache, didn't resolve it. Tried turning off IE EPM too. Had to just wait for the automatic update to appear and was able to upgrade via that. still not sure why this is happening, haven't had any problems with setup.exe in the past. Either something with setup.exe is different, or an update to Windows?

Yeah, I had to use the auto update. Tried the setup.exe for 3.0.5821.0 update and got the same error. Guess that is still broken for some reason, i'll have to stick with the embedded updater.

Instead of disabling Internet Explorer Enhanced Security on your server, add the following sites to the Trusted Sites zone using Internet Explorer options.  You will need to have "Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone" unchecked.  This is a more secure approach.

Trying to install it on Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials to compare it to plex server who installed with a single try.

- First try, have to disable internet explorer enhanced security.  Not a good thing....

- Second try, the installer crash with a nullreferenceexception, no informations to help at all.  Found out I had to reboot because windows updates were waiting to be installed.  What!?

- Third try, the clickOnce package does not download anymore because the url you specify in it gives a 404 : https://raw.githubusercontent.com/MediaBrowser/Emby.Releases/master/Server/windows/release/Application Files/MediaBrowser.Server.Installer_3_0_1_66/MediaBrowser.Server.Installer.exe.manifest.  Cleared the clickOnce cache, rebooted, no change.

 

The installation experience should be the easiest at all, it is the first impression the user have of your product.  If you don't put effort there, I'm afraid to see what effort as been put in the product.  After an hour, I am not even at the configuration step...

 

I will try with a beta version to see if the installation process is better.
