so last night after i turned off the roku app, i made an account here to ask a question (which was more or less answered)

now today i cannot connect to my server with the roku app, ive tried every method i could think of and making the account here was the only thing i changed

just trying to avoid reinstalling the windows server :P

any insight would be helpful

when i used to open the roku app, it would go right to my server if it was running, now gives me 2 options: add a server or signout of emby connect...

when i try to add my server, i type in the ip and port listed on the page for local (also tried the listed one for remote) and it says unable to connect, make sure the server is on and try again

when i click on sign out of emby connect i get the screen that gives you a pin and says to go to https://emby.media/pin/

i tried to connect using the pin and it says "pin confirmed thank you" but the roku just goes back to the first screen...

so i clicked the back button and i get 4 options now (in boxes in a horizontal row now not vertical text options if it matters)

search ::: preferences ::: change server ::: sign out

search is no help

preferences have no help either

change server takes me to the original 2 options screen

sign out takes me back to the pin code screen

also my server is dhcp (i normally dont use windows anymore so i havent changed it but i will try static)

Check the firewall on the server machine.  Sounds like it is blocking it.

yeah i thought that too (i had it turned off) so i went to advanced firewall settings and turned that all off too...

could something on the wireless router be blocking it? it was all working just last night

i was just informed that someone else tried to open the emby app on a different roku box in the house sometime between last night and now, could that do anything?

well i tried everything on that page, including turning windows firewall back on and opening the port, and all issues are still the same.

i was able to pull up the server page on another computers browser too so im thinking its just something to do with the roku box

i am going to try installing on linux again (had problems with linux mint) as i cant stand windows anyway :P

ill post here for public reference if i do figure it out

thanx for the input

EDIT: i just got it to work on the other roku box... i guess thats why i had a problem with the original one i was using...

im just going to switch them from room to room

Are you sure the Roku has network connectivity?

Which roku model?

Is the server freshly turned on? Sometimes you have to start a scan or the views wont load leaving you with just the 4 options from settings as selectable. This can also happen during the scan until it is a certain percentage.

Is the roku using wifi or ethernet?

Have you tried using the "blue neon" app and tried? It has its own registry setting seperate from the official app. You should remove all emby apps from you roku. This will clear the registry spaces. Then reinstall all going through the setup. This should fix whatever is wrong if corruption is the issue.

it is roku HD (ironically connected to a SD tv) with wifi

i did restart the emby server a few times and even restarted the computer (emby is not set to run at startup so i had to open it manually)

emby did do a scan but i had the problem before it started and after it finished

i will try blue neon app

and i did try removing emby app from roku and reinstalling it a couple times

EDIT: could not find blue neon app on the roku

I can repeat the "juicy" part of a post I made in another thread

-----

On your roku, go to the home screen. Then press the keys listed below.

Home Button x 5

FF x 1

Play x 1

RW x 1

Play x 1

FF X 1

You will come to a secret screen. Choose the wifi secret screen option. Now on this screen you can visually see enough information to start moving the roku around. Look for the signal strength to rise, and the noise decibels to lower. When you find a sweet spot test your library again. This is the only way to optimize the streaming on rokus.

On the wifi secret screen there is also an "interference" option with ways to minimize packet loss you can try different things on in case moving it around is of no help. You can also turn the "power" option of the wifi radio to full, and see if this makes a difference.

Edit: The blue neon app is a hidden/private link. You cannot see it within the roku store without a direct link to it.

thats a very useful screen on the roku thanx

so i traded roku boxes (both the same model) from room to room and it didnt change anything

the one in the living room is the one that wont connect. and the master bedroom does

so the master bedroom box, when i click on add server manually, gives me 4 options one of which is the name of my server(computer username) and connects to the server just fine

the living room box still has the same problems....

so it must be some kind of connectivity issue that i will have to play around with, seeing as trading the box for the other one did nothing

the confusing part of all this is that nothing was changed that would cause this and it was working yesterday

thanx for all the help ill just mess with is tomorrow

I was having a similar problem today.

Both Rokus had the same behavior - unable to connect to Emby server, resulting in pin-code connection screen for emby connect.

Yet browers from multiple PC's worked correctly.

I also preformed the same trouble shooting; both rokus can run other apps like netflix and youtube, and are pingable from the server.

Then I did a packet capture on the server while the roku attempted to connect. Saw an intial UDP broadcast from the Roku looking for emby server. The server replied to the roku with the wrong IP address.

My server normally uses 1 ip address on the single NIC. But I and added a second IP earlier in the day and left it. What happened was emby server had also restarted after that, now it was using the second IP in the broadcast responce to the Roku. That second IP was in a different subnet than the Roku, so I believe that was the cause of the problem.

Once I removed the second IP and restarted emby server, the roku started working again.

Maybe this is a bug that needs to be fixed on the server?

Server Primary IP: 192.168.1.66/24  --  Secondary: 192.168.0.66/24

Roku: 192.168.1.70/24

It isn't really a bug but it is a problem if you have multiple network interfaces because there is no way for us to know which one is correct and currently no way for you to force it.

The workaround for now is to be sure the correct one is the primary one.

I believe you can also work around this by manually entering the correct address into the roku app rather than rely on the discovery features.

Luke is correct. But the way to do it requires a bit of waiting. On the pin entry screen choose skip, connect to server manually. Now wait. It may take a minute but you should come to the screen with 4 icons: search, preferences, change server and sign out. Choose change server. Now choose the server it has listed. Choose remove server. Then choose add server. Now you can add the correct server into the roku. After you successfully log in, and choose a user. Make sure to sign out of the app using the sign out button. This will ensure these changes were saved. Now close and restart the roku app and this should work immediately and sign you right in as the last user you were signed in as.

well i narrowed down my problem

the only way i can get the roku box to work is if the one in the master bedroom is unplugged...

now sure what that means but im pretty sure thats the deciding factor.

i have moved the box around a lot and i got it to work in one spot

then i plugged the master bedroom roku back in and tried some other spots for the living room one and nothing was working again

so i unplugged the master bedroom roku again and boom! the living room works again with no problems (click on app from roku home screen and it loads right to the server)

not sure if that means its just my setup or not but it seems like both boxes are seen as one

but i dont think it can be that though because the server interface in firefox can see both and i renamed them to differentiate

EDIT:

also as a side note, i tried the server running from linux for a while and had the same problems so i just went back to windows before i did the stuff above.

Wifi interference between the two somehow...?

you know that reminds me, there is a wifi extender in the corner of the house (imagine an "L" shaped 1 story house) could that throw things off?

it must be something to do with wifi and/or wifi range/blockage and/or wifi extender

as of now i really dont think its a bug of any kind so no worries here i guess

well for now i have it somewhat working but i will keep testing

i suspect that even though i had it streaming fine in the begining, the fireplace is blocking some wifi signal to the living room original spot...

probly need a better connection than say netflix does

EDIT:

side note, when i stop streaming a file the web interface shows that i started it and then stopped it twice???
