Blueskies278 173 Posted October 10 Posted October 10 (edited) I've been working on this skin for a few weeks now. It still has some bugs I'm working through, and as soon as I feel it's ready, I'll upload it here. What it does Libraries (TV Shows and Movies) The backdrop of the title you're on fills the top of the page, with its logo, a row of badges (year, certificate, rating, genres) and the description. Below it sits one row of large cards in name order, with franchise films kept together in release order. An A-Z bar along the bottom lets you jump through the library. The cards use Emby's own card sizes. The Library card size setting picks Larger (the default: one card fewer across, each about a fifth bigger) or Home screen size (the same as the My Media row). Film and show pages The same look: big backdrop, logo, badges and Play buttons, with the cast in a row underneath. Clicking a person opens the Cast & Crew page on them. Cast & Crew page Opens from the Cast & Crew tab while you're watching, or from a person on a film or show page. The cast runs in a row of badges across the top, each with a photo, name and role. Crew has its own tab. For the person you're on, you get: their photo and name badges for their role, birth date and birthplace, and the director and writers their biography in a framed box beside them; a long biography scrolls slowly inside the box Career row: the person's whole career in date order, from their first film. The film you're watching comes first, and anything in your library is tagged LIBRARY. Each card shows its year as a badge, with the title after it. Career pictures chooses posters (at Emby's own poster size) or landscape art. Box sets: when someone made two or more films in a series (Alien, Avatar, Ghostbusters), the series is kept together as a box set. The first film's poster sits at full size, with the other films as named spines down its right-hand side. The more films, the wider the box. Badges underneath show the years and the number of films. OK opens the box set out into its films; Back closes it again. Film series in a career also offers Thread, Stack, Hero card or Off. TV shows work the same way: a show the person appeared in for several seasons becomes a box set of its seasons, with a spine and a poster for each season they were in. Film info: OK on any film or show shows its info right there on the page: poster, badges, a "Season 2" badge for a season, and the description in its own box. Films in your library get Play and Open film buttons. Layout: the Cast & Crew people setting chooses Career at the bottom (the default) or With decades. With decades, the career row lines up with the library row, and a bar of the decades the person worked in runs along the bottom; pick a decade and the career jumps to it. Everything works with the mouse, the arrow keys or a remote. The player The player's controls and tabs get the same restyle, and its Cast & Crew tab opens the Cast & Crew page. Not in yet Music libraries haven't been given the Kinora look yet - for now they keep Emby's standard look. How it works The skin is its own small server plugin, Kinora, and it only affects Emby's web interface. It draws the Kinora pages on top of Emby's default web interface and restyles some of Emby's own pages, such as the player. Emby's own code isn't modified. Turning the skin off in the plugin's settings returns you to Emby's standard look. It doesn't need any of my other plugins: it has its own settings and its own TMDB key, which stays on the server. Careers, box sets, seasons and pictures come from TMDB and are remembered, so each title only costs one lookup. Because it works by adding a script to Emby's web client rather than through an official plugin API, an Emby update can break parts of it until I release a fix. Credits & where the look comes from This skin's design is inspired by jurialmunkey's Arctic skins for Kodi (Arctic Horizon, Zephyr and Fuse). If you know Kodi, you'll recognise the layout, the badges and the overall feel. All credit for that design goes to him: https://github.com/jurialmunkey To be clear about what this is: every line of this skin was written from scratch for Emby. It contains no XML, artwork, icons, fonts or code from jurialmunkey's skins. It's an Emby-only build that recreates the feel of his work, not a port or copy of his files. His Kodi skins are released under Creative Commons Attribution‑NonCommercial‑ShareAlike 4.0. Nothing of his is included here, so that licence doesn't carry over. If I ever do use any of his assets in future, I'll credit them and follow his licence terms in full. When it's released, it will be a free, work-in-progress skin plugin shared here on the forum only. It isn't in the Emby plugin catalog and won't be submitted there. It isn't affiliated with Kodi, the XBMC Foundation, Emby or jurialmunkey. Disclaimer Kinora is a free hobby project, provided as it is, without any warranty. It's a work in progress, so expect bugs, and use it at your own risk. It only changes how Emby's web interface looks: it doesn't change your media files, your library or its metadata. Turning the skin off, or removing the plugin, puts Emby's standard look back. I can't be held responsible for any problems that come from using it, and support is given on this forum thread as and when I can. Kinora is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, Emby, Kodi, the XBMC Foundation, jurialmunkey or TMDB. All film and show artwork, names and information belong to their respective owners. This product uses the TMDB API but is not endorsed or certified by TMDB. Edited October 10 by Blueskies278 5
HairyBizRat 22 Posted October 13 Posted October 13 Awesome I’ve always wondered why we couldn’t get themes like Kodi etc 1

Blueskies278 173 Posted October 16 Author Posted October 16 (edited) Heads up: my new Kinora alpha build is nearly here! I’m giving it one last round of bug hunting today, and if all goes well, it’ll be uploaded later today. Hopefully, Kinora will enhance your experience using Emby. I want to keep this skin as minimal as possible, as I don’t want to overbloat it. Please test for bugs or features missing from the default Emby skin that I may have missed. Please remember I have not implemented Music yet. That will come over the next few weeks if the skin generates enough interest. Edited October 16 by Blueskies278
Blueskies278 173 Posted October 17 Author Posted October 17 (edited) Kinora 1.0.0.0 ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ First public release: a Kodi-inspired look for Emby's web interface. It works on Emby 4.10 and 4.11. To install it, stop Emby, put Kinora.dll in the plugins folder inside Emby's data folder, start Emby and refresh the browser (the guide has the steps for Windows, macOS, Linux, Docker and NAS). If you tested an earlier build, replace the file the same way - your settings carry over - and delete KodiStyleSkin.dll if it is still in the plugins folder, otherwise Emby would load the same plugin twice. New Everything below is in Emby's web interface, in a web browser. Libraries: in TV Shows, Movies, home video and mixed libraries, the first tab shows the backdrop of the title you are on across the top, with its logo, a row of badges and the description. Below it is one row of large cards in name order, with films of one series kept together in release order, and an A-Z bar along the bottom. Cards carry Emby's own marks (watched tick, episodes left to watch, progress bar). A capsule under the logo shows the best picture and sound formats, for example 4K, Dolby Vision, TrueHD Atmos 7.1. Library card size picks Larger (the default) or Home screen size. Home screen and the other tabs: Kinora's top bar with Home, Favourites and Upcoming; Emby's own spotlight with its details as badges; a Favourites tab with the library look; and Genres, Networks, Episodes, Folders, Suggestions, Collections, Tags and Upcoming restyled to match. They are Emby's own tabs, so everything Emby does there still works. Film, show, season and episode pages: the same look, with the cast in a row underneath and Emby's own buttons in Emby's order. Each shows its running time and when it would end, or the time left with a progress bar. Watched and Favourite change at once, and Hide spoilers follows Emby's own setting. Back button: "Back" with a blue arrow at the start of the top bar, wherever Emby has its own back arrow, so you don't need the browser's back button. It does exactly what Emby's back button does. More like this: a button after Play that opens Emby's own similar titles in the page, where the Cast & Crew row sits: posters with the year and title. Down goes into them, Left and Right move along, OK opens a title, and Up goes back to the buttons. Media info: films, episodes and videos get a button after Play that shows the file's details in the page as badges: video: resolution, HDR / Dolby Vision, codec and bit depth, frame rate, bitrate audio tracks, with the default track outlined in blue subtitles, with format, forced and external marked file: name, container, size, running time Back, Close or pressing the same button again closes either panel, and the Cast & Crew row comes back. Cast & Crew page: opens from a person on a film or show page, or from the Cast & Crew tab in the player. The cast runs in a row across the top; for the person you are on you get their photo, badges, a biography in a framed box, and their whole career in date order. Anything in your library is tagged LIBRARY. Films of a series, and the seasons of a show the person was in, are kept together as box sets. A bar of decades can run along the bottom. Every film in a career shows its full title first (up to two lines) with the year badge underneath, so long titles are not cut short. A closed box set keeps its own caption (years and number of films). Poster and landscape views. The LIBRARY tag and the 1, 2, 3 on the films of a series are Kinora badges: dark glass, a thin grey border and bold white text, with the blue film icon beside "Library". A person with no photo gets a person icon, with their name and what they do (Acting, Directing or Writing). When TMDB has no biography for someone, the Biography box says so. Moving between people is fast: everyone's details, career and photo are fetched in the background as soon as the page opens, and long careers draw the visible films first. The Biography box keeps its size while you move, with the last person's details dimmed until the next person's arrive. Crew that Emby lists as a director but TMDB lists only as an assistant director (for example a first assistant director) still get their directing work, and their badge shows their actual job. Cast & Crew settings: Cast & Crew layout while watching, Cast & Crew people, Cast & Crew text, Career pictures, Film series in a career and Career tags change how the page looks. Career tags is Kinora badge (the default) or Solid blue. The player: Emby's own controls restyled in place, with a badge line under the title and a clock with the end time. The buttons match the rest of Kinora: as high as the badges, dark glass, a thin grey border, and white line icons with a blue centre. Play/Pause and Stop carry their word. There is a Stop button next to Play/Pause (Emby's own, which it normally hides while a video plays in the browser); it stops the video and leaves the player. The Cast & Crew tab opens the Cast & Crew page. Menus and dialogs: every Emby pop-up menu and dialog has the Kinora look, and the focus frame is one thin blue line. The settings button in the top bar is a gear with a blue centre. Settings: Enabled switches the whole skin on or off. TMDB API Key is optional and stays on the server. Moving around: the mouse, the wheel, the arrow keys or a remote all work. Known limitation Music libraries keep Emby's standard look. Web browser only. The Emby apps (Android, iOS, TV apps, Theater) keep their own look. Without a TMDB key there are no careers, box sets, seasons, network or studio logos, running times, certificates or franchise order; everything else works. The first time a person's career opens it can take a few seconds while TMDB is asked. After that it is remembered. Media info shows the first version of a film that has more than one version. More like this follows Emby's own rules, so it is not offered on seasons or episodes. Stop leaves the player, exactly as Emby's own Stop button does. A person's job title only differs from "Director" when TMDB has no Director credit for them on that film. Kinora works by adding a script to Emby's web client rather than through an official plugin API, so an Emby update can break parts of it until I release a fix. Blueskies278 173 Posted October 18 Author Posted October 18 (edited) Kinora 1.1.0.0 ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Nothing you have saved changes. Every setting keeps its name and default, and there is one new setting (below). Replace Kinora.dll with the new one (stop Emby, swap the file, start Emby), then refresh the browser. New Episodes left: a show or season shows how many episodes are left to watch, and "1 left" when only the last one is. An episode you started but did not finish counts as left to watch, even if Emby has it marked as watched. Web browser. Watched tick: now a Kinora badge too: dark glass, a thin border and a blue tick, in the same box as the number. The glass is see-through with a soft blur, so it stays readable on light pictures. Web browser. Box sets in landscape view: the front is the film's own wide picture at the same size as every other card, with the spines added on its right, so the card grows sideways by one spine per film, as it already did in poster view. The spines show the film's name without the series name. Web browser. Career cards the same size as library cards: on the Cast & Crew page the career cards are now exactly as wide as the cards in the library row. Kinora learns the size from the library page, so open a library once in that browser first. Web browser. More career pictures: when TMDB has no English wide picture for a title, Kinora now asks Emby's own FanArt source. New setting Fanart.tv API Key (optional) (Cast & Crew section) is a second fallback if Emby gives nothing; the key stays on the server. A title with no picture at all still gets a card made from its name. A-Z bar: restyled as a Kinora badge: a blue icon and "A-Z" at the left, the chosen letter in bold white with a blue underline. Web browser. Touch screens: rows can be swiped sideways with a finger (for example on an iPad). Web browser. Fixed A film or episode you have only part watched no longer shows the watched tick when Emby has it marked as watched. It shows its progress bar instead, and its show or season counts it as left to watch. Web browser. A box set card in landscape view was taller than its neighbours when a film name was long. The spines no longer set the height; a name that is too long ends in an ellipsis. Web browser. A career title whose picture look-up failed, or was refused for asking too fast, was remembered as having no picture for a week. Failed look-ups are no longer remembered, a title with no picture is checked again after a day, and old "no picture" entries are dropped. Web browser. Known limitation Until a library page has been opened in that browser, the career cards use an estimate of the library card size. Episodes left for part-watched episodes is read in the background, so a show can take a few seconds to catch up after you stop watching. Cast & Crew layout while watching set to Classic does not open the Cast & Crew page properly yet. List and panel (the default) is fine. Blueskies278 173 Posted October 20 Author Posted October 20 (edited) Kinora 1.2.0.0 ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Nothing you have saved changes. Every setting keeps its name and default. Replace Kinora.dll with the new one (stop Emby, swap the file, start Emby), then refresh the browser. Fixed After an Emby update on Docker the skin could stay off until you disabled and enabled it, because Emby could no longer write to its web folder. Kinora now keeps checking every 30 seconds and switches itself on once Emby can write to the folder, so nothing needs toggling. If it cannot, the Emby log explains how to fix it. Web browser. Blueskies278 173 Posted October 25 Author Posted October 25 (edited) Kinora 1.3.0.0 ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Nothing you have saved changes. Every setting keeps its name and default; two settings are new. Replace Kinora.dll with the new one (stop Emby, swap the file, start Emby), then refresh the browser. New Shadow background: new setting. The soft dark background inside Kinora's badges and behind the description: Badges, and a shadow box behind the description (default), Badges, and a soft shadow behind the description, Badges only, or Off. Web browser. Upcoming time: new setting. Where the air time sits on the cards of the Upcoming tab: bottom left (default), top left, top right, bottom right, or off. Web browser. Upcoming tab: a day-by-day timeline. Each day has its date on a rail with a dot, today is marked in blue, and that day's cards sit in a row beside it. Web browser. Phones and iPads: Kinora now has its own phone layout (details across the full width above the row, cards a little over half the screen so the next one peeks in, tabs and A-Z letters that swipe sideways, finger-size buttons) and an iPad layout (the computer layout with bigger text and buttons). Tabs and buttons are pressed the moment the finger lifts. Web browser on iPhone, iPad and Android. Films still in cinemas: a cinema film's page now has the same badges, buttons and layout as any other film page, with the three dots level with the badges. Web browser. Cast & Crew on films in cinemas: the cinema film's page now has a Cast & Crew row under the description, with each person's photo, name and role. Press OK on a person to open their Cast & Crew page, and Back returns to the film. The cast comes from TMDB through the TV Air Dates plugin, so it needs the current TV Air Dates as well. Web browser. On an iPhone or iPad the Favourites and Upcoming tabs on the home screen sometimes did not respond to a tap. They now respond on the first tap. Web browser. Known limitation Kinora is for the web client, including the browser on a phone or tablet. The Emby apps keep their own look. IAmHugh 99 Posted October 25 Posted October 25 From the look of you post looks promising. I just removed a CSS theme to try this. I used a CLI app I have for stopping the Emby service, dropped your DLL in the plugins folder, restarted Emby, and I've only got the default Emby theme. I checked you plugin and it says the them should be enabled. Emby 4.11.0.10 beta on a Arch Linux OS 1

Your Emby log says why the skin is off: Kinora couldn’t add itself to Emby’s web client because, in Emby’s Docker image, that folder belongs to root while Emby runs as another user. One command on the Docker host fixes it (replace <container> with your Emby container’s name, and 2:2 with the UID and GID set for the container, or leave 2:2 if you never set them): docker exec -u root <container> chown -R 2:2 /system/dashboard-ui Kinora checks every 30 seconds, so within about half a minute it switches itself on. Then refresh the browser. No restart needed. An Emby update or a recreated container gives the folder back to root, so run it again after updating (or put it in cron every 5 minutes). Hopefully this should fix it. Edited October 25 by Blueskies278 1
IAmHugh 99 Posted October 25 Posted October 25 (edited) The media stack is using Podman not Docker. Before running any command I'd need one that can revert the state if the one messes something up. Edited October 25 by IAmHugh 1
Blueskies278 173 Posted October 25 Author Posted October 25 (edited) 25 minutes ago, IAmHugh said: The media stack id using Podman not Docker. Before running any command I'd need one that can revert the state if the one messes something up. @IAmHugh Updated Thanks for checking before running anything. Podman uses the same commands as Docker, so only the word changes. Replace <container> with the name of your Emby container (podman ps shows it). Nothing outside the /system/dashboard-ui folder is touched; your Emby config, media and library are on volumes and are not involved. Why it happens: Emby's container image keeps its web files owned by root, but Emby itself runs as another user, so Kinora cannot add its one script line to the web page. An Emby update puts the folder back to root. Emby does not give plugins another way in, so for now the fix is a one-time ownership change on your side. Step 1 - find out who Emby runs as (changes nothing): podman exec <container> sh -c 'for p in /proc/[0-9]*; do if grep -qi emby $p/comm 2>/dev/null; then grep -E "^(Uid|Gid):" $p/status; break; fi; done' It prints a line starting Uid: and one starting Gid:. The first number on each line is the one you need - write them down as UID and GID. Different setups use different numbers (1000, 2 and others are all common), so please do not copy a number from anywhere else. Step 2 - look at the folder, and save the current owners so there is something to go back to: podman exec -u root <container> sh -c 'ls -ld /system/dashboard-ui; find /system/dashboard-ui -printf "%u:%g %p\n" > /tmp/dashboard-ui-owners.txt; wc -l /tmp/dashboard-ui-owners.txt' Step 3 - the fix (put your UID and GID from step 1 in place of those two words): podman exec -u root <container> chown -R UID:GID /system/dashboard-ui This changes ownership only, not the files or their permissions. Kinora switches itself on within about 30 seconds, no restart needed. To undo it - if step 2 showed the folder owned by root: podman exec -u root <container> chown -R root:root /system/dashboard-ui Or, to restore exactly what step 2 saved: podman exec -u root <container> sh -c 'while read o p; do chown "$o" "$p"; done < /tmp/dashboard-ui-owners.txt' The ultimate undo: as far as I know /system is part of the container image, so removing and recreating the container (podman rm, then run it again as you did before) puts the folder back exactly as it was. Rootless Podman works the same way; -u root there means root inside the container, not on your host. After an Emby update: the folder goes back to root, so Kinora is off until you run step 3 again. To do it automatically, add this line with crontab -e (use your own UID, GID and container name): */5 * * * * podman exec -u root <container> chown -R UID:GID /system/dashboard-ui The next Kinora version will print the exact command for your setup in the Emby log when this happens, so nobody has to work out the numbers. Let me know how it goes. Edited October 25 by Blueskies278 1
IAmHugh 99 Posted October 25 Posted October 25 OK thanks for really going above and beyond. Let me run that by the individual who built the stack for me. Just had a issue with Emby not going online to fetch metadata, along with some already pulled metadata breaking. I'm assuming the later was due to Emby not being able to update the metadata and eventually all metadata would break for the same reason. The good thing about the 4.11.0.8 issue during fixing it a bug in ProtonVPN was also exposed and fixed, so all ended up working out because of the Emby brackage. Again thanks for quick and thorough responce. 1 1

Glad it helped Let me know how the commands go with whoever built your stack, and if anything doesn't work, paste the output of the first command and I'll sort out the right numbers for your setup. One thing to bear in mind: Kinora's Cast & Crew careers, pictures and series info come from TMDB. If ProtonVPN (or any VPN) blocks TMDB, those rows may look empty, so that's worth checking if you ever see it. Edited October 25 by Blueskies278 1
IAmHugh 99 Posted October 25 Posted October 25 Yea I went in to TMDB and I thought it would be just a matter of signing into my account, going to my setting, grabbing the API key, but they want someone to request one. That would be fine but even under personal they assume you using an organization. 1

That would be fine but even under personal they assume you using an organization. You're right that TMDB asks you to fill in a short request form for the key now - it's still free for personal use, but it's a request and not an instant button. Here's what to put in: 1. Sign in at themoviedb.org, then go to Settings, API, and request an API key. 2. Choose personal / non-commercial use if it offers it. 3. Application name: anything, for example "Kinora for my Emby server". 4. Web address: your Emby address, or any page you have (it doesn't need to be public). 5. Summary: say honestly what it's for, for example "a personal media server at home, not commercial". 6. Once it's approved, copy the value called "API Key (v3 auth)" - not the long read access token - and paste it into Dashboard, Plugins, Kinora, TMDB API Key. Approval is often quick, but it may take a little while. Kinora works without a key, but you won't get the careers, box sets, seasons or logos until it's in. I'm updating the guide so it says this properly. Thanks for pointing it out. 1
IAmHugh 99 Posted October 25 Posted October 25 Yeah I just gave it Emby, the forum address, a quick reason, and my personal info. 15 seconds, maybe. 1 1
