nypaulie 1 Posted May 28 Posted May 28 I use this OS on a T61 ThinkPad. Using the Software Repository’s Emby Server I had an easy install. I am stuck at creating my media directory. The path to my files is “/home/paulie/“. If I add a directory say named “Media” I can’t enter: “/home/paulie/Media” and have Emby recognize it. I’ve tried many names. Oddly, if I just put “/home/paulie” as the path it accepts it but where do I place the music or movie files? I’ve searched for a simple instruction set, but cannot find anything I understand and I’m somewhat computer savvy… Thanks for any help!
sargenthp 36 Posted May 28 Posted May 28 (edited) 1. Why use an OS version that is support ending within the year? 2. The user "emby" needs access to the folders and files. So either file ownership or emby is within a group that has access to the files As the structure I have a folder called Media as well (External drive mounted under /data). Then I break it down to music, pictures, videos. Then within each I break it down more for my content. But I wanted to control media little more dependant on my "users". Edited May 28 by sargenthp
nypaulie 1 Posted May 28 Author Posted May 28 Thank you for your interest! I will place my directory under /data (/data/Media) and adjust permissions and see what gives. Is this your suggestion? And why the comment about my OS, is it relevant to my problem?
Solution nypaulie 1 Posted May 28 Author Solution Posted May 28 (edited) Your comment: “The user "emby" needs access to the folders and files” was what hit me. I changed my usage to user: “emby” and put a Media folder into this directory: “/var/lib/emby”. l now have this directory : “/val/lib/emby/Media”. The upshot is it all now works. Thank you so much. Forgot to mention, I needed to tweak some access & permission settings to get it to work. Hey, my 88th BDay was yesterday. Edited May 28 by nypaulie

nypaulie 1 Posted May 29 Author Posted May 29 (edited) Yes, I’m aware of the OS mortality issue, but am reluctant to upgrade, as I’ve had some rough going dealing with this in the past, but thanks for reminding me. Thanks to your help my media directory now looks like this. Edited May 29 by nypaulie Wanted to add a graphic image. 1
Q-Droid 1024 Posted May 29 Posted May 29 As a general practice it's not a good idea to put your media files in the emby user home path under /var (/var/lib/emby). If you were to delete the emby user with the option to remove their files that would also remove your media files. Your first idea to put them under /data/Media is a better approach. Would still need to make sure ownership and permissions are good for the Emby server to access them.
nypaulie 1 Posted 54 minutes ago Author Posted 54 minutes ago Thanks Luke this forum has been very helpful, but as I keep my media files on a separate hard drive I would prefer to have Emby use that. Problem is I couldn’t get Emby to “see” them. I’d like to not have to store these very large files on my main HDD.
