Emby Server stopped working after 4.9.1.80 update

Emby dashboard suggested to restart Emby server to update from 4.8 to 4.9..
I restarted it, but it hanged there forever. I let it do its thing for several hours. Eventually I gave up and restarted the whole windows machine.
Server cannot load (connection refused). I show a glimpse of interface loading with the error attached .
Log shows that core components are initiated just fine, but somehow the web component doesn't work. Given the last entries of the log, I suspect the issue is with the sqlite database?

Server was working fine for few years now and been through several major updates. That's a first one.
I tried several windows reboots but always the same result.

Any help is appreciated.

Looking at the error logs, the server fails to load multiple scripts.

Are you connecting via app.emby.media or are you connecting directly to your server?

I am connecting directly to my server

@brothom, could you explain what scripts fail to load? I'm not very familiar with Emby logs, so I couldn't spot something that seems off from the logs.

Sorry, I should have explictely mentioned the webbrowser log this screenshot:

image.png.d15c8a03013013aaec637eab3b241e0d.png

It looks like a bunch of the scripts / assets can't be loaded. Maybe this is because your server has upgraded.

Can you maybe try to clear your browser cache / cookies? You're able to reach the emby page, but some other content doesn't seem to be right so that indicates the server is running.

Hi, I would try clearing browsing data and seeing if that helps.

Sorry, I should have clearly stated that the screenshot attached is only when I run EmbyServer.exe and the browser open up. Once I reload the web page just goes down (connection refused/unable to connect) from all browsers including incognito and I just realized that the Emby server stops running because I can't see it in the processes...so this looks bad :(

Any other suggestions?
Shall I try to revert to 4.8 or it's a bad idea?

Possibly another server log as there really is nothing in the posted one as startup looks fine.

I wish there was another log, but since the update and the restart of the server, that's all I get.

Here's the last attempt to start it up. Exactly the same log output.
So I start the server, browser tab opens with this:

I reload the page and get this:

Emby server  process is dead and log attached gets generated. So I am kind of stuck.

Nope, nothing under Applications events related to Emby whatsoever

As said in the EmbyIcons thread, i will try and update the dependencies for the plugin and see if it help.
It should work fine with the new version as is though.

What backups do you have of the database files.

The log shows this error

SQLitePCL.pretty.SQLiteException: Corrupt: database disk image is malformed
SQLitePCL.pretty.SQLiteException: Exception of type 'SQLitePCL.pretty.SQLiteException' was thrown.

It would be either restoring to a backup that does not fail on this sqlite3 command

PRAGMA integrity_check;

or trying to see if it can be repaired - following the instructions on the article linked above. Sometimes corruptions are just in the index which would be recreated

Not necessarilly related - but i suggest changing the database cache value. In 4.9.x we open a number of DB connections and each would try and use the configured cache size

I suggest reducing database cache size from 1000 Mb to the default of 128 Mb

Also if you get problems like this in future, adding debug logging may give some clues

if server fails to stay up, edit system.xml (when server process is not running) to change this line to "true"

  <EnableDebugLevelLogging>true</EnableDebugLevelLogging>

system.xml would be in this folder

C:\Users\xxxxxx\AppData\Roaming\Emby-Server\programdata\config

thanks for the database size suggestion.

Regarding  <EnableDebugLevelLogging>true</EnableDebugLevelLogging> , is quite interesting that even though I set it to true, when I start EMS, it gets reverted to false.

Are you editing the file when Emby Server process is running? Ought only edit system.xml when there is no EmbyServer.exe process running

What is EMS ?

Yeah , Emby Media Manager. I don't acronyms myself (way too many), but I saw others use it on the forum, so I thought it was common.

I managed to set it to debug finally. I thought the process was not running as it was not available in task manager, so I have no idea what happened.
Thanks all for the help!

Dear SA2000 and others,

Finally, I succeeded in recovering the database, but it took some time.....: As I had recent and some older backups, I discovered that the recent databases-backups all had errors, thus restoring them still gave errors and Emby didn't start....thus I had to repair a recent backup bij using sqlite3 library-recovered.db and .read recovered-librarydb.sqletc.: it took some time (775MB library.db), but it finally succeeded!

Looking back, it seems that some database inconsistencies already existed during some longer time, but were not recognised and/or critical....and they were not detected in earlier versions of Emby.....

  • Question-1: is there a way to avoid this for the future ?
  • Question-2: is it true, that Emby v4.9.1.80 is more critical on database inconsistencies ?

After I started Emby v4.9.1.80, I for the first time saw all new things...GREAT work guys !

Thanks for your good support - keep up the good work !

Thanks & best regards, Peter
