i got emby setup to my server and i was able to stream to my local devices on my network. but i cannot stream outside my home. i looked into this and my ip address is dynamic so i cant use a direct connection for emby to connect to external ip address. so i dug deeper and found emby connect. i created a account and all it has listed is: add server and sign in with emby connect. i click the sign in with emby connect button. it then takes me to a area where i fill in my username and password i created. as soon as i click the sign in button, it just takes me to previous screen with nothing changed. if i go home and add my server using the add server button, it only allows me to add it via the local ip address. which i am able to add it but when added and i sign into emby connect, it shows my local ip aka the one i created at home but cant connect to it. what am i doing wrong?

In order for Emby Connect to work, you must first configure your server to be accessible remotely.

Try following this guide: Connecting from Client Apps, specifically "External Connections"

i was actually coming to ask this exact question i cant seem to get around. i feel  like its definitely a bug with Emby connect

From my understanding, Emby connect is the tool that was created to help make external access easier?  If that isn't true let me know but that's my understanding

So with that understanding one of our users of our server (me) is the only one who connects both locally AND remotely.  I can NOT use my Emby connect outside our local network. On the other hand, everyone else ,who only accesses my server remotely, Emby connect works perfectly well for.  Makes no sense.  It seems to be a bug for when a Connect account swaps between local and remote.  I don't really want to go through the hassle of opening up ports and stuff if there is this connect feature that works fine for everyone else remotely but myself?

Hi, it is a tool to help save you and your users from having to remember your server ip address.  That’s essentially all that it is, so you still need to have remote access working for your server first. Have you done that? Have you taken a look at this?

I've never done any of the port forwarding. In fact I just double checked using 'Portdroid' while out of my local network, that port 8096 is not open.  Therefore I'm just confused how my remote only users use Emby connect perfectly fine and use my server.  I am using a Synology if that matters

Like I just want that functionality they're receiving for a user who goes in between local and remote because it seems it allows users who never come in network to get access if the admin links their Emby connect accounts to a server user name

You probably have to forward ports, and it depends on your network set up.

for example, if you’re behind two routers called a double nat you port forward on each oruter

if one router , then just support forward, ones and the existing router

I suppose if you’re not behind the router at all and just directly connected to a modern, you just have to make sure whatever firewall you’re using on Windows is not blocking emby - I could be wrong, but I think maybe emby creates a firewall rule in windows firewall by itself so you dont have to do it - someone can clarify

But if you’re behind a router or more than one router, you have to go into your router(s) settings as well,

of course, in the network settings in emby you have to make sure allow remote connections is on as well, but that on its own is not enough

Right now just forget about emby connect - and just focus on getting remote connection set up and working

I definitely can as a last resort but this isn't really answering my question of how my remote users are able to use Emby connect accounts to connect to my server when I don't have ports open

The server's automatic port mapping feature can help automate this, although it's not guaranteed to work with all routers.

i still dont understand why my origional problem is what it is and why it is happening guys. when i had plex, it works fine out of the box. to me, it seems to me it is a emby app or emby server side issue. it allows me to login like i said but i cant connect to my server via a external connection. unless someone can do a step by step to setting up a internal and external connection via the emby app and i can see where i am going wrong. cause again, when i go to my emby app and sign in using my email address i use for the emby server. all i see is my local ip server and add new server and there is the connect to emby connect which if i use that, it goes back to previous screen. if i go to the add a server button, it asks for a ip which i cant use due to me being dynamic ip!

here is what i see in app:
the one is when i can connect via lan. the others is when i make a attempt to connect via wan. the one that shows the login. after i try to login, it takes me back to the screen that has the icon for my server for local

You still have not confirmed that you have completed all of the steps in the "External Connections" guide that I originally replied to you with.

Emby Connect will not work until you have done that. Your server needs to be configured for remote connections first.

The way Plex operates is such that all your connections go via their central servers, this makes it easy for them to provide remote connectivity without any user intervention.

Emby is designed to be self-hosted (your server and connections are yours only), therefore it is up to the individual admin (you) to configure their Emby Server for remote access.

What exactly happens when you try to enter the address manually?

@Spyr01But don't you want a personal media server rather than one that puts all of your information into the cloud to sell to the highest bidder?
