My ISP Gave Me a New Router/Modem Now Emby is Not Seeing My Ports? (6-4-2025) How Can I Open My Ports Again?

I am having issues porting my Emby server out so others can access it again.

I am using Avast Firewall as my firewall setup, and I don't know if there is some configuration I need to do again since I have a new IP address I guess.

Five years ago when I originally set up Emby, I was able to get assistance on here from the community, which I greatly appreciated, but it seems like I have to open up ports again now.

Aside from Spectrum (my ISP) and their app, I opened the ports up there, I also contacted them over the phone to explain my situation and they told me I opened up the ports on their end, but Emby or my firewall is perhaps interfering (I have the feeling they are still not familiar with media servers as they are still a niche market)  but I don't know if there's any other steps I need to do?

All I know is nobody can access my Emby server at the moment.

There are 3 ports I need to open 8096, 8920 and 7359, correct?

I can and will post screenshots later on today if needed. But just wanted to get this topic posted. Thanks for the help in advance.

Since you are in general / windows i assume your server is running windows.

Your Server / pc most likely got a new IP.

Check if your network is set to "Privat"

Check router forward settings are forwarding to you new Server IP.

Can you connect to Emby from a local pc "not your server" ?

Maybe ditch their router and go with ubiquiti.

If your ISP allows it I find that putting you ISP's device (router or modem) in bypass and using a stand alone router for your networking is the best solution. That way you have complete control over your networking.

There are other ways to accomplish keeping Emby connected but using a separate router is among the easiest.

that is what a spectrum representative said as well. So I might just buy a new router all together.

Is that what you're going to do?

I don't know yet...I still need to find out how nobody can remotely connect into my media server and why my media server still shows my old IP address on emby when I try to connect into it remotely...it says Sign into "my network mane" and shows the old IP addresses and old remote IP address. It only is playing on one of my computers that is setup with my router.

On the sign-in page, have you tried to add a new server with the correct "new" remote ip address?

For the vast majority of uses you do not need anything fancy. There are many many routers that do a great job and cost not too much.

I am currently using a TP-Link Archer A9 that I bought some years ago and it still serves my needs very well. I think I paid something like $49.00 for it several years ago. There are fancier (More powerful? ) routers available now but prices are also priced quite a bit higher. On a simple search on Amazon I saw at least 10 that are more than what is actually needed and priced under $100.00.

Stick with a brand name and do not try for the cheapest price and you should find one that will fill your needs.

I suggest that whatever router you choose be able to be upgraded with dd-wrt as that allows for many mods that improve performance but that is also not necessary. My current router does not have dd-wrt (but it does have the ability to be upgraded if needed) as I do not need what would be opened up but my needs are simple.

I also do not recommend the router/modem combos as that limits the flexibility. Just do a little research based on your needs and you should find all you need.
I also do not recommend buying from a B&M store as the selection is always limited and the sales people are always instructed to push certain devices based on profit.

I had a similar problem after changing out a Spectrum modem. It replaced my old ip address with a new one, but my signing into Emby would always try the old address. I ended up adding a new server with the new address and it connected after that. I also had to tell my family members to change to the new server. After that happened a couple of times, I ended up using No-Ip for a hostname, so now I don't have to worry about ip address changes from Spectrum.

I'm not tech savvy, I would consider it, but...I have no idea where to start if I needed to go that route yet.

Does your sign in page look something like the one below? If so, try clicking on add server, then put in the new ip address and click connect. It's worth a try before buying a new router.

yes it does (not on my desktop) but on my other devices. On the desktop when I load the emby app it loads into my server, but my live DizqueTV channels have no thumbnails and my content on-demand loads and plays for one second, then stops. But as I mentioned the other devices it looks like the photo you posted.

So I have to add the new address and it will connect to the existing server? Or will that create an all new server from scratch?

It will connect to your existing server.

oddly my phone seems to be connection to emby both thru my wifi and through the phone data when i tun the wifi off from my phone....but nobody else can connect to emby yet remotely anymore. Perhaps my phone has residual files and it thinks its on wifi still. I just noticed that now, but i'm also testing in my house without the wifi on my phone.

Should I include log files as well?

I tried that and it still does not seem to connect. I am going to have to call a technician perhaps.

Which plan do you use or recommend? I might also do this to avoid this from happening again.

I'm still using the free account which means I get an email every 30 days to validate. I am planning on upgrading to the enhanced plan at a cost of $39.99 for 2 years.

I just have their standard 500 mbs plan and i have never had my ip address change, But I do not use any router from Spectrum, I use a separate router and that seems to prevent many problems others face.
BTW: I have had Spectrum going on 15 years and problems like many people have from ISPs doing "things" just do not seem to happen to me. I am so jealous. ;)

I have tried other providers at times on a trial basis but i always kept my Spectrum account active for the test period and I have yet to find better.

As far as the OP's issue I still think using Spectrum's "router" in the bypass mode is both the simplest and most likely to work solution.

BTW2: My plan costs $79.99/month and includes my basic cell phone plan.

Disclaimer: I do NOT have or use remote connections so remote users might have, or trigger, different issues.
