Capt.Insano 3 Posted May 22, 2025 Posted May 22, 2025 (edited) Android app version: 3.4.67 Android Server version: 4.9.0.60 Chromebook: HP x2 11 (all software up to date) Issue seems to happen when playing x265/HEVC videos only, when videos opened they play way faster than they should even though speed option is set to x1 Normal. Problem does not happen if I use Chrome browser on my Chromebook or even if I use the Emby for Android TV app (Navigation of Emby for Android TV app is difficult however). Screenshot of stats for nerds, screen recording of Android app, logs of Android app and server all attached. NOTE: I am currently travelling to a timezones +1 hour ahead of my server's timezone so time stamps may be 1 hour off. Please let me know if I can provide anything else to help. GLant80 8 Posted May 22, 2025 Posted May 22, 2025 I think I can second this, but for me it's happening on h265 or h264 with any video that has more than two audio channels. Anything with stereo or mono plays fine. If the file has more than one audio track, it will play sped up on a 5.1/7.1 track, but if I switch it to the stereo track the same file plays fine. 2
Capt.Insano 3 Posted May 23, 2025 Author Posted May 23, 2025 Can confirm, problem related to audio stream rather than video codec. Any video with audio stream over 2 channels cause the issue where video plays way to fast. @Luke Is there any option for downmix to stereo in the Android app (non-TV)? Thanks @GLant80
Luke 42077 Posted May 28, 2025 Posted May 28, 2025 HI, have you tried this again with the 3.4.70 android app update?
Capt.Insano 3 Posted May 29, 2025 Author Posted May 29, 2025 Unfortunately no improvement with version 3.4.70. Updated log attached: emby_android_1748549483389.txt
eTomm 6 Posted June 30, 2025 Posted June 30, 2025 Hello, same problem here. My son came to me with this strange problem. But I have it on all the videos even h264. The voice seems to go up double speed. The video seems normal speed but with skipped frames. When slowing down the speed voice does not seems to be effected, but video seems to slow down but still seems to skip frames. If I can help, I'm here
EyeShore 2 Posted July 1, 2025 Posted July 1, 2025 I see similar symptoms - video and audio play way too fast - on Android. In my case so far it seems to apply only to h.265. h.264 and others I've tried have been fine. Also happens on videos with a single audio track. Tried upgrading everything to the latest, rebooting, clearing Android-side storage. Happens on a Chromebook (running, essentially, Android 13) but not on a phone.
EyeShore 2 Posted July 1, 2025 Posted July 1, 2025 I think the problem MAY have started when my Emby Premiere expired recently, and that it has to do with SW transcoding only. It seems to be transcoding from h265 to h264. Maybe due to lack of HW support in the Chromebook tablet where I see the problem. I believe it WAS using HW transcoding (Intel Mac 2019) in the past, and that might be why I didn't see the problem until recently. However, I've re-set up Emby Premiere, confirmed it is active, server+client restarted, etc. But now I don't see it doing transcoding. I'm not sure if it's supposed to be supported on Intel Macs. I'm like 95% sure it WAS doing HW transcoding, and it definitely gives me the option in server settings (and is enabled). I don't see anything in any config that should prevent HW transcoding from working. Either way, I also don't see any difference if I chance various SW transcoding options (h264 profiles and whatnot) although I haven't dug into any extended ffmpeg messing around.
GLant80 8 Posted July 1, 2025 Posted July 1, 2025 The issue in this thread isn't actually limited to h265. It happens on any Chromebook on any file that has a surround sound audio source. H264 or h265 play fine if the audio is stereo or mono.
EyeShore 2 Posted July 1, 2025 Posted July 1, 2025 Well, I guess forget all that. For some reason now I'm seeing it on at least one h264 video. Client reports Direct Play for everything. Do not see it for an mpeg4 / AVI video that also reports Direct Play for everything. Still do not see it on a different h264 video that reports Direct Play for everything. Some examples: Working: MKV, 1080p h264 5mbps 23.976 fps Audio: AAC 192k No subtitles No transcode Failing: MKV 1080p h264 3mbps 23.976 fps Audio: EAC3 5.1 256kbps SDH subtitles No transcode Failing: MKV 1080p HEVC 5mps 23.976 fps Audio: EAC3 5.1 640kbps ASS subtitles Transcodes -> HLS/h264/AC3 Failing: MKV 1080p h264 4mbps 23.976fps Audio: AC3 640kbps No subtitles No transcode
EyeShore 2 Posted July 1, 2025 Posted July 1, 2025 I think you're right for my case as well Glant80. I thought originally I disproved it, but so far every video I've found that is stereo plays fine. The 5.1s are not. I'll post back if I find different.
pwhodges 2012 Posted July 1, 2025 Posted July 1, 2025 Are the failing 5.1s AAC or something else (like AC-3 or DTS)? I seem to recall that there have been times when AAC 5.1 was not handled though other versions were. Paul
GLant80 8 Posted July 4, 2025 Posted July 4, 2025 I just tested. Interestingly it seems to be the opposite. AAC multi channel files are playing fine. Anything other than an AAC audio codec (AC3, EAC3, DTS) won't play correctly. AC3 and EAC3 seem to be the ones playing at double speed. The DTS files don't even start playing on my Chromebook.
horstepipe 422 Posted July 7, 2025 Posted July 7, 2025 (edited) Just ran into the same problem while on holiday and using my chromebook with transcoding in a hotel Edited July 7, 2025 by horstepipe
EyeShore 2 Posted July 14, 2025 Posted July 14, 2025 Thanks Luke. Let us know if you need any help reproducing / debugging (if it only happens on some hardware / configs maybe) 1 1
friskyplatypus 0 Posted October 15, 2025 Posted October 15, 2025 There's still no fix or workaround for this issue?
Capt.Insano 3 Posted January 2 Author Posted January 2 Another 2+ months on and issue still present. Downloaded movies to my chromebook via Emby Android app for a long flight and movie would not play correctly. Again: played too fast just like my sample video above. Thankfully I had android VLC app installed prior to flight where the file played perfectly Any update at all Luke? I appreciate that you are looking into it but the issues was reported and confirmed by other members 6+ months ago.

Hi, we are working on integrating a major update to the video player that we embed (exoplayer). After that we'll re-evaluate where this stands. Thanks.

The issue reported in this thread is happening exactly the same as always (HP X2 11 Chromebook, latest ChromeOS, latest Emby android (universal) app, latest Emby server) When i try to play certain videos the speed is way too fast (both video and audio speed). Same videos play perfectly in android VLC on same chromebook.
