chuwz 11 Posted February 12, 2025 Posted February 12, 2025 Hi, I refreshed my description., so I start a new Topic. Currently Emby's subtitle logic is that when the PGS has "default" tag and the external subtitle is “movie.en.default.srt”, then the external subtitle will be chosen. This design is very equal and gives priority to external subtitles, but it's not enough to external subtitles fans, I would like it to be less equal. In the current situation, if external subtitles is "movie.en.srt", and we want it be default when PGS subtitles have the “default” tag, we need to do some extra work such as adding “.default.srt” to the external subtitle file or using ffmepg to remove the PGS subtitles. It's too much trouble. At least with Plex and Jellyfin we don't have to do this extra work, Plex and Jellyfin will choose external subtitles even if PGS has "default" tag and external subtitles is "movie.en.srt". This makes subtitle files simple and easy to maintain. There's been a lot of discussion here about how we'd all like to have external subtitles selected by default, (Without change the subtitles to “movie.en.default.srt”) set .SRT subtitle files as default Make SRT subs default even if PGS or DVDSUB are in MKV? but the developers thinks that if it satisfies us then PGS fans will raise objections. So in my opinion, just add an option to make Emby ignore the “default” tag on PGS subtitles .This option would satisfy the needs of some of us, while turning it off it's no different than it is now. This will satisfy everyone. Could you please add this option? Thank you very much!

That isn't really what you want. Then there would be some other situation that caused the internal subs to be selected. What you want is for the system to prioritize an external sub over an internal one of the same language - regardless of any other attributes. At first blush, this does make sense as why do the external subs even exist if they aren't what you wish to use... 1
Luke 42077 Posted February 13, 2025 Posted February 13, 2025 hi, I would try the smart subtitle mode. That doesn't really look at the default tag.

Hi, thank you very much for your reply! 1.Yes, that's exactly what I was thinking, I favor external subtitles. And I hope it doesn't affect the existing situation, so I made this suggestion, an option that could be turned off. 2.You don't think my suggestion will solve the problem, so I came up with a new idea. Maybe adding an option that can be turned off, which would ignore embedded subtitles when there are external subtitles, would solve the problem. Such as this picture

Luke 42077 Posted February 13, 2025 Posted February 13, 2025 Hi, more options are certainly possible.

So hopefully our request will be implemented soon! 1
Knaack 0 Posted February 3 Posted February 3 Hoping to rebump this idea. Emby works great for all of my needs EXCEPT for this. Both Plex and Jellyfin either default to external srt files or allow a choice that overrides the default flag to select external subs. Renaming srt files to .default.srt breaks other automations.
Luke 42077 Posted Wednesday at 06:48 AM Posted Wednesday at 06:48 AM HI, yes more options to control this are certainly possible. Thanks.
