They won't return immediately. They could return later if you have it enabled on the library. 1

I have it enabled for to Save video preview thumbnails into media folders & it says nothing about saving to metadata folder so why would it return if i have made plenty of room on external hdd's to cover all bif files needed for media on that drive Edited October 1, 2024 by rcsnoopdog

Yes you can delete bif files whenever you want but per library configured options they will be regenerated. If your drives are local preemptive caching is somewhat useless. I have figured out what was confusing me, when i checked Keep a cached copy of images in the server's metadata folder i did not realise that bif files are images as i thought they were bits of video as in video preview's and so not associated with images so i could not understand why they were in there when i had checked for them to be saved with media, as Happy2Play says " if your drives are local pre-emptive caching is somewhat useless " & mine are local but i thought that checking this option would just cache jpgs alone so that when i access them remotely on tv they would show quicker as posters always seemed to be a wee bit slow to appear So sorry for being a dumb ass If possible i just have 1 other question & don't know if being dumb again but here goes 1. Does the tv i watch Emby on remotely cache stuff from emby like posters & if so does that mean it should speed up the more pages i open By the way thank you so much Happy2Play because after reading what you said for about the third time it dawned on me & thanks to anyone else on here Edited October 2, 2024 by rcsnoopdog
Carlo 4561 Posted October 2, 2024 Posted October 2, 2024 @rcsnoopdogHi, 1 hour ago, rcsnoopdog said: So sorry for being a dumb ass I think you're being too hard on yourself in the above post! You kind of found out BIF files are a special or different kind of image than traditional images files but non-the-less are image files. Knowing this the settings make sense, but to anyone just starting to use BIF files they may seem more of an index or even video file. Your question about local caching of images is going to be "it depends". It could cache things for a local session or for a period of time. Take a web browser for example which will normally cache all the images and not request new images every session until they expire. How images get cached along the way from server to client can be quite elaborate depending on remote vs local, if you or an Internet provider uses any type of reverse proxy or transparent proxy, etc.. It can become quite technical, but Emby is designed to make the best use of these types of things to deliver content as quickly as possible while keeping the images current. Hope that helps, Carlo
