casminkey 19 Posted February 12, 2024 Posted February 12, 2024 Any ideas why subtitles for a particular movie would be shown off-screen? Meaning, you can only see the very tops of the letters?  I frequently use subtitles and never seen this before. Oddly enough, the movie is A Quiet Place and it's all sign language, so subtitles are necessary. This is from VLC, and looks fine...  But in Emby, they are too low and mostly off-screen...  Any ideas?
Luke 42077 Posted February 12, 2024 Posted February 12, 2024  Hi there, let's look at an example. Please attach the information requested in how to report a media playback issue. Thanks! Â
casminkey 19 Posted February 12, 2024 Author Posted February 12, 2024 Appreciated it! Started playing it from Chrome browser at 2:45pm local time (EST), via username Curt. I fast forwarded to the 4-minute mark which is the time of the screen shots I submitted earlier. embyserver.txt ffmpeg-transcode-72ed3583-9786-46e0-aca2-57de0aeacf98_1.txt
ebr 16169 Posted February 13, 2024 Posted February 13, 2024 Hi. Are you running a projector on a 2.35 screen?

But issue happens on an iPhone as well. I can try from other devices if that's helpful, like a TV with Google TV or Roku.
badous 17 Posted February 13, 2024 Posted February 13, 2024 (edited) Hello I am having the same issue with PGS subtitles. When a movie is full screen, Ican see them even if they are low, but if it has got black bars, it is hidden behind them. here are logs.ffmpeg-transcode-ea5b9063-c74f-4752-bed7-1bc68e2d7ff0_1.txtembyserver.txt Edited February 13, 2024 by badous 1

Happy2Play 9780 Posted February 14, 2024 Posted February 14, 2024 Something does not look quite right looking at both images as the bottom on I would say is cropping the bottom of the image.
badous 17 Posted February 14, 2024 Posted February 14, 2024 The format of the movie is 2.40:1 in this instance. When it is a 16:9 movie, the subtitles appear correctly. It looks like when transcoding, the server convert correctly the subtitles but adds a black bar on top of them.Â
Luke 42077 Posted February 17, 2024 Posted February 17, 2024 HI, as a test, if you turn off hardware transcoding, how does that compare?
badous 17 Posted February 18, 2024 Posted February 18, 2024 Hi @Luke, I turned off hardware transcoding and it displayed the subtitles correctly. On my android tv box using Emby for androidTV 2.1.02g and even on the browser. Â Here are some logs of that moment. embyserver (1).txtffmpeg-transcode-78af2102-527c-4038-bddc-b946abb6c87a_1.txtffmpeg-transcode-fb77721b-5950-45d1-b23a-52dff7838020_1.txtffmpeg-transcode-869cfb23-e386-44de-854c-d7cb62fb3e54_1.txtffmpeg-transcode-b9bb2123-99e3-4ceb-968c-7dc800e98ade_1.txt

I am, and with the subtitles in the lowest position (which I've always used), the lower parts of the characters are cut off (like the bottom of g, j, p, etc). Is this a known issue?

JoLas 26 Posted February 22, 2024 Posted February 22, 2024 4.8.1.0 I now have this problem with embedded PGS subtitles. The subtitles either do not show at all or only a few pixels showing at the bottom. The only thing working for me is turning off hardware transcoding. I'm normally using Intel Quicksync (Intel UHD Graphics 630). I know for sure these movies played without problems a couple of months ago.  With hardware transcode ON: With hardware transcode OFF: embyserver.txt ffmpeg-transcode-ddff145c-e340-42df-bdc2-cf9a119a890a_1.txt
badous 17 Posted March 17, 2024 Posted March 17, 2024 Any new development on this? It is very annoying when almost 90% of what you watch is with subtitles.
visproduction 315 Posted March 17, 2024 Posted March 17, 2024 (edited) sections.css and formdialog.css does safe-area-inset-bottom get a value somehwere or is it coming up as null or 0 in sections.css? Edited March 17, 2024 by visproduction

Yes they are completely off the screen when hardware transcoding is on. I tried with vaapi and quicksync encoders, same thing for both. I even tried all the possible choices in the new subtitle options section. Still no luck. Whatever the player I try on. If the player can natively display pgs subs, no problem. But as soon as the video is transcoding, no more pgs displayed.
badous 17 Posted April 20, 2024 Posted April 20, 2024 Still the same issue with 4.8.4.0. PGS displayed with hardware transcoding off and hidden under the black bar with hardware transcoding on.
JoLas 26 Posted May 17, 2024 Posted May 17, 2024 (edited) Same issue with 4.8.7.0 unfortunately.... so I'm stuck with software transcodning Edited May 17, 2024 by JoLarsson
