Closed captions on Android

I am having trouble with Live TV closed caption played via emby from my HD Homerun to my Android phone and my NVIDIA Shield Pro. Subtitles work fine in Windows web browser and emby Theatre on Windows. Direct play is used in all cases and subtitle extraction on the fly is enabled.

I read in some older posts that there was or is an issue with Exoplayer. Is this still the case or am I looking at a different problem?
