Hi @Dominic TowellI would suggest checking out our Connection Troubleshooter:

Connectivity

Please try the steps listed there and let us know which ones succeed and which ones do not. Thanks !

Tried all that pal. Can get it to connect at home. Once I want to try and do a remote connection is where the issues start. The check my port says it can’t see the ports but they are definitely open.

Hi, Which steps from that document succeeded?

External connections

Test your external address - fails

Setup port forwarding - this has been done

Verify public port - fails

How about everything that came before about inside the local network?

How did you setup port forwarding in your router? Can you show a screenshot of that?

No problems pal with local connection.

Here is a screen shot of the port forwarding

Does your ISP allow use of these ports? Some have specific rules.

Is either side running a vpn?

BT is my provider pal.  No VPN running pal.

Who is BT? Did you check that they allow use of these ports? Some providers have very specific rules.

Are you running a reverse proxy?

BT is my isp. I have a 1 gig connection. How do I know if they allow them ports? It was what Emby set up. Reverse Proxy? Don’t think so.

BT = British Telecom.  The largest ISP in Britain (about 1/3 of market share).  They are a typical mass-market provider.  I don't use them, so I can't comment on their access policy.

Emby is the only software I have struggled to get set up so far. There definitely has to be a way to get this to work

Server's OS firewall?  Server's network profile public or private?

Are you accessing the server with your WAN IP address or a domain?

The firewall is the windows 10 built in one.
Trying to access via the WAN IP address.
not sure if the server network profile is public or private

I was asking if you have checked the firewall rules to make sure Emby can access external traffic and to make sure those rules match your network profile.

To check the profile, go to Settings > Network > Properties.

What client app are you using to connect?

Is your ISP using GCNAT?

My ISP doesn’t use GCNAT.

client app? I’m trying through the app for the iPhone.
I will have to check the firewall settings but I’m sure they are all ok.

How did you confirm this?

I haven’t confirmed this but I don’t have problems with any other software only Emby

Do you have other software that you access directly from outside your network, which is what you are trying to do here?

If check my port (or whatever) doesn't see the ports as open, then there's no point trying a client.  You need to fix the actual problem.

What software do you already have that you access from outside through the router, and what ports is it using?  Bear in mind that some software can sidestep CGNAT or router blockages by creating a route through the supplier's servers (e.g. Pl*x),

We can check for CGNAT by doing a traceroute to anywhere (e.g.8.8.8.8) and showing us the output.

Do the firewall rules clearly allow connections from the router to 8096?
