Remote access stopped working from nowhere

Hi!

I've been using Emby for a few months now and never had any major issues, right now though it seems that my remote access is not working anymore?

When I try my remote WAN locally it just returns "ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED" and since I know that I have not done any changes to my home network, I know it's not and I don't think it's a loopback issue... I don't understand what went wrong all of a sudden!

Just bought premiere again and for this reason only, would love to get it resolved. Thank you in advance for any help on this!

Hi, are you able to connect from other devices inside your home network?

Yeah, both with Ethernet and with WiFi.

It's possibly related to you using a local device to try and connect via the WAN (loopback) - emby is rejecting it on security grounds - re recent emby security updates.

For this device - I would clear the cache and remove the client - then reinstall it and see if it then connects ok.

Failing that - then try using the local IP directly.

I think either you're misunderstanding my issue or I am misunderstanding you. Everything works fine locally, it's just that Emby connect isn't working and neither is my remote connection. So I can't view my files on my 4G/5G network.

This may be adding to the confusion - 'try my WAN locally'

If you turn 'off' the wifi on your phone - then it will be using the 4G/5G network - ie it is properly 'remote/wan'.   if you use wifi on your phone - but are using the 'WAN' address - then you will be going via loopback - and this may be the issue as I originally described.

So if you can clarify which connection type doesn't work and then we can go from there .. :)

Sorry for the confusion, first post was written late at night. When I type in my "Remote (WAN) access: http://xx.xxx.x.xx:8096" into safari - while on 4G connection - it doesn't connect. That is the issue, therefore it's the remote access that is the issue here. It worked before, hence my confusion regarding this. Until I bought premiere.

Right ok - so nothing to do with local - gotcha.

Check your WAN IP is still valid - it may have changed from your ISP (use 'what's my IP' in Google - and compare that to what Emby thinks it is)

Also use something like 'canyouseeme.org' to check your ip and port.

Tried that, it's the same IP as in Emby.

Although, canyouseeme.org showed me that connection times out. It can't see me when I type in my IP and 8096 port. I know I have not port forwarded my network as I am unable to do it. Although I didn't think that was necessary?

ok - and any response from canyouseeme.org ?

Did you manually setup the port forwarding ?

Worth looking though this guide to tick off the basics ...

It is necessary if upnp is not working (nothing to do with emby).

My advice is to manually port forward and turn off upnp.

Follow the guide above - let us know how you get on and we'll try and help if no joy .. :)

I’ll have to lookup UPNP but is it possible for it to just stop working out of the blue? I’m not educated enough to say but it seems the issue is, in fact, Emby related since it stopped working when I bought premiere again.

I’ll try to port forward or cloudfare tunnel into the network, but that makes it such a hassle as I don’t want to expose my network and ruins the streamlining that Emby provides. Is the UPNP something I can fix if that seems to be the issue?

Hi.  If you want to access your server from outside your network, then it must be "exposed" in some way.  This can be done relatively safely.

All UPNP does is automatically make the changes to your network settings that the referenced guide is showing you how to make.

Man that sucks, I'll try to get it fixed and report back. Although since I can't port forward I'll try to solve it some other way, either with VPN tunneling or maybe just restarting the router lol.

I just restarted the server and now everything works again. Lol, of course that solves 99% of all issues.
