After IP address change, can't connect to Emby Server anymore

Hi, are you sure that is the correct IP address? Is that our web app?

Posted (edited)

Hello Luke, thank you for the prompt reply! The screenshot shows the Windows 10 app. Yes, it is the correct host entered there, I copied it from the server.

I have tried to troubleshoot this for 2h using every single troubleshooting step described here: https://support.emby.media/support/solutions/articles/44001849007-connectivity.

Whether I try to connect with the regular new IP address or the Emby server address and port 8096, I get a connection error message.

If I enter my Emby Connect login details, the apps (Android and Windows 10) simply reset to the page where it asks to pick a server.

I'm very much lost here and no idea how to restore my access to the server on my tablet and laptop (the server is on a Windows tower PC, which I can access and where everything works fine.)

If your LAN address changed, did you update your router port forwarding to the new address?

But locally if devices on your LAN cannot connect there is most likely  a firewall issue.

I have not looked into that, going to do it now and report back, thank you!

Update on this: I have logged into my ISP-provided account, to check at a glance how my network is setup. Emby Server is listed as enabled to use UPnP and therefore forwards ports automatically. I have triple checked that the Windows 8.1 PC hosting the Emby server has a static IP address, and that said address is the same as shown in the screen in the first post of the thread. Still getting connection error messages across all my devices (Windows 10 laptop and tablet) and unable to login with LAN and Emby Connect alike.

I would probably suggest setting up the ports anyway rather than relying on upnp.

Also when you tested earlier with that screenshot, were you inside or outside your home network?

Could you give me pointers/articles on how to go about that? I believe I have done this but I could be wrong as my native language is french, I will have to check again.

And yes for the screenshot, I only use Emby at home.

Okay let start with Emby is only accessible via the host machine and not from any other device on your LAN, correct?

Yes, that's correct.

That suggest the Windows firewall is the issue and/or network type Private/Public but still would come back to firewall rules for Private/Public.

First you could try shutting down Emby and go to "C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Roaming\Emby-Server\programdata\config\system.xml" and change <IsPortAuthorized> to false and start Emby and see if you get different results.

Otherwise you may have to clear existing rules already in the firewall.

Thank you for these steps! I'll implement them tomorrow and report back.

So I changed the <IsPortAuthorized> to false, and when I restarted Emby Server, a popup asked me whether to enable the app for Private or Public, and I picked "Private". Still unable to login across devices after that.

I just realized I overlooked this. I assumed that my antivirus software, Malware Bytes premium, had Firewall rules and kept enabling/disabling EmbyServer.exe in the app. But after verifying online, the Firewall rules are to be established in Windows Control Panel which I did and you were right: a lot of rules related to Emby were checked for both Private and Public networks. I have unchecked "Public", relaunched my apps across devices, and Emby prompted me to enter my LAN login info. And now I'm logged in again, so happy!

Thank you all so much for your help, it's solved now. Really appreciate the speed and professionalism of the help, I don't come often across this type of quality support online 👍

I know this topic old old, but hoping to help others...

I had some network issues and had to replace my router/gateway (went from ubnt USG and uck-g2 to UCG-Max).  In doing so, I ended up changing the ip address for my win 11 computer running emby server.  I updated my port forwarding rule in my new router to match my new ip address and still could not connect (local and internet connections would not work).  I have been pulling my hair out for hours, uninstalled and reinstalled emby, restarted everything multiple times, dug through router settings and windows firewall rules and pulled out more hair.  I found this post, changed the "<IsPortAuthorized>" to "false" in the "system.xml" per recommendations above.  After restarting emby server, I received the windows popup to allow access, and voila!  Back in action.

Thanks again for the help on this... I wish this trick had been linked somewhere in the emby connection help info here (unless I missed it?):  https://emby.media/support/articles/Connectivity.html

TLDR, changed my emby server ip and could not connect via local or remote apps.  Firewall rules in my router were correct.  Followed this post and fixed my windows client firewall issue.

Thanks again for the active community!

Pretty sure I know what the issues was but what is your Network Type Public or Private?

Since it is Windows 11 and a new network connection I will guess Public as that is Windows new Default but previous firewall rule blocked Public and the new script cleared the old rules and added new one allowing it to work on that network type.

Yes, my current (new) win 11 connection type is "public."  Can't remember the previous setting anymore, but am sure your logic is correct.

Thanks again for being an active community.  It's one (of MANY) reasons why I continue to love using Emby.

Maybe your IP addresses changed when your equipment restarted?  Something to check, anyway.

Assuming we are referring to the local Network IP Address changing, you should switch to using DHCP Reservation in the router for the Mac Address of the server. Look into the router documentation for DHCP Reserved IP Addresses
