Hi,

I've configured an IP TV source and I'm receiving the channels.

How can I edit –the metadata– of multiple channels to add tags and parental ratings? I know I can do it individually, but there are so many channels. Tried the web interface to no avail.

Using 4.5.4.0

Thanks

Hi, In 4.6 (almost released) you can use the "group" tag feature of the m3u which will create TAGS in Emby which can then be using for "grouping" or for parental filtering.
As soon as 4.6 is released you can use this!

Thank you. I’ll be looking forward to it.

@cayars Really looking forward to this.  I use TVHeadend and it does not support exporting out tags as group-title, so I'm prepping to write a Python script to prepare for this functionality.  Is the functionality to take advantage of the group-title tag in m3u?  How will it handle multiple tags per channel, is it delineated by semi-colon?

Good question that I'm not sure off but I'll test in a couple of hours. I've got another test running right now that will a while to finish.

@cayarsI went ahead and put the script together with the group-title tags separated by semicolon and it seems to be working.

If anyone is interested I have a python script that will compose a m3u file from TVHeadend with the proper group-title tags included.

Blast you. Posted like 5 minutes before me. :)

I was going to tell you I got the same result.  I thought it would work like this but wanted to test it first.

Awesome, thanks for this! Been waiting for this functionality.

A follow up to my initial question if I may (don’t want to open a new thread).

Can I bulk-delete channels with the current version? Couldn’t find a way.

Also, is it possible to tell Emby not to bother downloading channel schedules (M3U url)? I stop the refresh and it says “stopping” but never finishes and this reflects on the CPU.

I have thousands of channels that I don’t need and I’m struggling to sift through them and eliminate what’s not needed 😅

Thanks

With thousands of channels I'd recommend installing xTeVe and running both the m3u and xml files through it and using the results in Emby.

It can help you out tremendously to narrow down your channels to only those you really want.  You can filter based on many things which is key to reducing your lists.

4.5 Server does not have a"hide" but 4.6 does.  But if you can remove these channels before loading into Emby it's going to make loading faster for you.

Thank you. I’m new to all of this IP TV stuff. I hope I can manage installing xTeVe 🙂

It has a bit of a learning curve but "clicks" with a bit of play and then makes sense how it works.  It's worth the time to learn it for sure!

Hi again,

I’ve installed 4.6.0.48 on a virtual machine on my Synology DiskStation. How can I search using tags? It is supported in 4.6 if I understood correctly.  Clicking the search button (magnifier) does not offer an option to search on tags.

I think I still can’t multi-select and group delete, or search and group delete the results, right?

Hi.  The search does this automatically.  Just type something in and see the results.

Clicking on "navy" would then give me this

Clicking on "navy seal" would give me this

Hope that helps

We have pushed out a change to M3U functionality that can be very helpful and used by admins in a few different ways.

image.png

When setting up or editing an M3U tuner, you will see a new option to use.  "Auto-add tags to channels" shown above.
This will do exactly what it sounds like. Every channel loaded from the M3U source will be tagged with the entry you set in the config.
Each M3U source can have a different tag associated with the channels from that source.

USEFUL USES

Many IPTV providers limit the number of simultaneous streams in their service. If you need additional streams, you could purchase another plan adding a 2nd m3u tuner to your system, you end up with an unmanaged set of channels, having duplicate channel entries of every channel. Not only does it make using LiveTV harder to maneuver with double the data, it looks far less clean and becomes confusing to users.

With the new auto-tagging functionality, you can set a tag like IPTV1 and IPTV2 to each tuner.  Every channel will now be tagged according to what tuner it's associated with. With the help of Emby's Parental Controls you can add a tag assigned to a tuner's channels in parental control in the section that blocks items with these tags.

Setting Up Tags for TV Users

  • Split Users: Set up half your TV users with one tag and the other half with another tag. Each group shares one tuner and only sees one set of channels.

  • Multiple Subscriptions: Use 3, 4, or more IPTV subscriptions to spread the number of tuners/streams across your users.

Tagging for Different Uses

  • Split Subscriptions: Have one IPTV subscription split among your users while keeping a second subscription for your use. This way, you can provide LiveTV and recording abilities to users, while reserving a subscription for your own private use.

  • Curate Channels: If your m3u file doesn’t use grouping, move multiple channels at once to category-based m3u files (e.g., sports.m3u, news.m3u, kids.m3u, premium.m3u, network.m3u, local.m3u). Set these up in Emby LiveTV with each file having a tag to match the content.

  • Multiple m3u Files: If you have multiple IPTV m3u files from different sources, tagging helps you know what source a channel is from by looking at the channel's tag.

These are just a few of the creative ways this new functionality could be used.

If you don't see the new tag option when adding or editing an M3U tuner, it may not have updated on your system yet. You can manually upgrade this easily by upgrading the M3UTUNER plugin to 1.0.32 or later in the Plugin Catalog.
