ASS subtitles refuse to work in the Samsung app

Whenever I attempt to play a file with .ASS subtiltes on my Samsung TV, the subtitles either don't show at all or appear but out of sync. This has been an issue for as long as I can remember, but in the past .ASS has been rare for me, so I never bothered to report it. Now however it has become quite irritating as I'm consuming more media using this subtitle format.

The file and subtitle run fine in other apps such as Emby Theater. VLC will load them fine too, so there's nothing wrong with the file. According to the TV app the file is (as it should) being direct played, so I don't think it's a transcoding issue. If someone could help me solve this I would be immensely thankful. I'll provide the details of a singular file below, however, it does appear with all files which have .ASS subtitles that I have tried.

Tizen OS version: 1242

Samsung TV model: UE55KS8005

Emby client version: 1.0.86

Emby server version: 4.5.3.0

I could not find a log matching the timeframe where I tested this.

Does it work any better when the subs are external?  I've run several movies with external ASS with no problems, so wondering if that may be the issue

There have been some changes to ass handling in recent versions. Looking at the version number you’re using, I expect you are using the version from the App Store. The new version with these changes is being processed by Samsung, which shouldn’t take too long, but at this time of year who scan be sure.

Alternatively, you can load the Beta version from USB but it needs to be regularly updated manually, so if you can wait a week or two to try the new store version that is probably worthwhile. I think it will resolve your issues.

This is playing fine for me.

@MeltNvy, @Midaz something you can both check.  Please try again playback with subs, then check the server log file at the time of playback and check for lines similar to these (Search for  Info SubtitleEncoder: ProcessRun). You shouldn't need debug logging on for this,

Take note of the server path for the extracted sub file (highlighted above), and please check for this file on the server in this location.

Open the file in a text editor, and confirm whether it contains lots of Events data (as per below) or only the Script Info and Styles sections.  I've seen one instance lately (and a few reports in the forum) of files missing the Events data, or empty files.

I'm unable to play the test file provided by Midaz with internal ASS subs either.  I get a "No compatible streams are available" error.  However, if I extract the ASS subtitle and play as external it works fine

Yes, the ATV app will extract and play the internal ASS subtitles correctly.

Since the Samsung app will play the ASS subtitles if extracted manually I would say the subs are good.  It's just the automatic extraction of internal ASS subtitles which isn't happening correctly using the Samsung app

Could be it fixed in a new update or something like that ?

I assume everyone has "Allow subtitle extraction on the fly" enable on Dashboard-Transcoding

Allow subtitle extraction on the fly
Embedded subtitles can be extracted from videos and delivered to Emby apps in plain text in order to help prevent video transcoding. On some systems this can take a long time and cause video playback to stall during the extraction process. Disable this to have embedded subtitles burned in with video transcoding when they are not natively supported by the client device.

LOL, no.  I turned that off because was told it took less resources (though slight) during playback to extract them myself beforehand.  @Midaz your file plays fine on my TV now using internal ASS subs with that option set.

ATV must not use that setting as your file works for me without it set on my Shield

Have you checked your logs to to see if you're getting the errors SamES mentioned above?

Because you restricted transcoding permissions from the user.

I didn't want it to transcode, but Direct Play.  However, I didn't have extract subtitles on either 😳

@SamESI did a quick ctrl-f to find SubtitleEncoder in the log after playing the file I sent to you, but found no matches. @Happy2PlayI do have subtitle extraction on the fly enabled in the server settings.
