Android app music playback issue

[dv1r 25]

Lately I have been having an issue with playing music in the android app.

 

When I play an album or an instant mix everything starts normally.

After 1.5 songs the stream stops and I am unable to resume it.

I must restart the album or create a new mix. 

 

I am using android 11 

EMBY server version 4.5.4.0 on XPEnology version DSM 6.2.3-25426 Update 3

I am new to Emby but am encountering this same problem with the latest version of server and app.

I have 2 different android devices that stop  music playing (Samsung Orbit (android 8), and Pixel 3A android 11) (i think when the phone goes to sleep) while using the android app.  Both of them do NOT exhibit this behavior when playing movies, or when playing music using the chrome web interface.

I think I have the same issue.  I am running the Dec. 19 update, but on previous versions, and on this version, during music playback, the app crashes to desktop about a minute or two after the phone screen goes to sleep.  However, the notification-bar playback controls are still present (but unresponsive).

I guessed it might be a battery-conservation issue, but I have excluded Emby from the battery-saving app-management list and the issue persists.

Not sure where to find log files but point me to instructions if that would be helpful.  Thanks!

For me the issue has changed and usually doesn't affect my experience. 

 

I still haven't figured out what is going on and I haven't been able to reproduce it so I haven't posted anything about it yet.. 

 

The playback will suddenly stop sometimes, but after a long time. 

Instant mix's don't finish, they usually just stop like before and I cannot resume them. 

But like I said before, I am unable to reproduce it so I'm still keeping an eye on it. 

 

If I find some cause ill post it.

Well, unfortunately, I am still having this issue.  Here are the conditions:

• Only on phone: LG G7 ThinQ running current version of Emby app; but the prior version or two have had the same behavior.
• Current version of Emby server.  Updated a few days ago but it did not make any change to this issue.
• The app crashes -- partially -- about 30-120 seconds after the screen goes to sleep, causing playback to cease.  I can avoid the issue by setting a high screen-timeout.
• Once I re-awaken the device:
  • The notification-area playback bar persists, but the controls no longer function.
  • On the lock-screen, the album image of the album still displays, so some part of the app is still running.
  • If I move to desktop and click on the Emby icon, however, the app boots up from scratch to the home screen, not to the album I was previously playing.
• I am not running any background apps for screen or battery management.
• Emby is excluded from Android battery management.
• But ultimately it seems like a power-management, or (maybe more likely) a memory-management issue.  
• Previously this seemed only to happen when in the car (i.e., on mobile data), but recently I have reproduced it on my home wi-fi also.  It does seem worse when on mobile data, however.
• I do not seem have the same issue on my other two Android devices: a Samsung Galaxy 9+ and a Tab A.

At this point I am assuming this is more of an issue on the hardware/OS side of things, rather than Emby as such, but I am seemingly not the only one and I would still love a solution, or at least some avenues to investigate.

I've been getting this same output in my log as well (server and app versions are up to date). Even though I never hit the stop button. But when I hammer the next song button 3 times or more it will crash it every time. Only seems to be an issue when connecting remotely. Locally or through my VPN (connected to server ip) I can do it all day and never a problem. So with that said......

I've been testing with the Brave browser for Android. Created a home screen icon so you get that app like feel. Testing both MP3 and FLAC. Connection is remote. No issues when hammering the next song button, playback is smooth and song transitions have been seemless and quick. Overall music playback performance is as it should be. Not a solution to the emby app problem but a stable workaround so far. Tested playback via artist, shuffle, instant mix, album.

As for playback stop when your screen is off. I feel this is and android issue I have not troubleshooted yet. I've done all the normal steps, (turn off battery optimization, allow background data, etc) but when screen is off for an extended period of time, playback will stop. Even using the Brave browser, but if I wake my screen and get back into my app, playback does resume on it's own, which so far during my testing the emby app will not, I have to relaunch the app. I've noticed on my lock screen that playback notification bar does disappear when screen is off for a period of time, but comes back after waking phone and playback has resumed. Which leads me to believe that Android is killing it in the background. Maybe I'm just missing a setting? Any thoughts appreciated.

Hopefully this helps create some new avenues or thoughts of what to investigate as to where the problem lies.

If anyone else tries this workaround please post back your results, as it may help someone else.

Update:

After further testing via bluetooth connection my results are: Using Brave Browser

Music playback continues on it's own, even playing the next song without issue, until I press skip on the bluetooth unit then playback stops and notification bar disappears. MP3, FLAC, transcoding, direct play, it doesn't matter, until I wake android device and go back to the "brave app". Then playback resumes on it's own.

I can't provide any logs, but maybe someone else can test this and see something I don't.

I will continue to test the Brave browser as it has yielded the best results for music playback so far. I've used Emby for several years now and music playback has always been a problem in Emby for Android. Don't get me wrong, I mean no disrespect to the devs because Emby is solid and in my opinion Plex doesn't even compare to Emby having used both for many years, but I've given up any expectations that the music playback issues will ever be fixed in Emby for Android.

You can either download the current package and side load it (local install) or wait for it to show up in the store assuming you joined the beta team.
