iOS connection issue

iOS windows

Best Answer pglatz-ec , 24 February 2020 - 02:03 PM

Found the issue finally - my iOS devices were pointing to the wrong router and dns, now I can access the app. I have connected via the web app in Safari, went to a media folder, and was able to play a video on my server.

Thanks for your help, very pleased with Emby.

I just installed Emby server on a Windows 10 server. I can connect to it fine via the web on my Mac. However, I can't connect via Safari on my iPad Pro or iPhone 7. All computers and iOS devices have the latest versions of the OS. I'm using the URL http://192.168.86.30:8096, which corresponds to my server. The message I get is "Safari could not open the page because the server stopped responding."

When I use the iPad Emby app, my server is listed, but clicking on it give "unable to connect to the selected server right now..." I tried sign in my Emby Connect and clicked on the server again, same error.

Since my server name is showing up, it is getting that.  from somewhere, is it because I am logged in?

I am at a loss as to why it won't connect via web on iOS, but will on my Mac desktop.

I have pored over the online docs, read the forums, and used Google, can't figure this out. I am guessing the Windows server is refusing the connection, but my Defender Firewall settings were set by the install, and all look correct, I don't see any ip or port blocking. On a related note, the Windows server is new, replacing an older one that I used for Plex. Plex used to connect to iOS until I set up the new server too, further making me think it is a Windows issue. Is there something peculiar to iOS blocking me? Are there logs on the Windows server that might give me a clue?

Thanks for any suggestions. I"m glad I found out about Emby, it feels much friendlier than Plex.

Hi there, have you checked out our Connection Troubleshooter? Please try the steps listed there and let us know which ones succeed, and which ones do not. Thanks !

Yes, I read it many times. It says my local access is http://192.168.86.30:8096 -- works on my other desktop computers on this LAN, but will not open on iOS devices on the LAN. With the iOS app, I can log in and my server is listed, but when I try connecting (by name or manually), I get "connection failure."

So it seems to be accessible via desktop web browsers, but not iOS. My iPad Pro and iPhone 7 are both running iOS 13.3.1

So I pulled out an old iPhone 4 that has iOS 7.1.2 and is on my LAN - and I was able to log in and access the server just fine.

My son was also able to connect with iOS 12. So it sounds like a possible issue with iOS 13.3.1 - have you any reports of this?

According to https://emby.media/c...-new-video-osd/ at least iOS 13 was supported last September, by the iOS app 1.8.3. I installed from the App Store today, and am using 1.9.3

My server is 4.3.1.0, running on latest Windows 10.

I'm not aware of any new iOS settings that would block Emby.

Thank you for your help and suggestions.

Hi there, are you the device is actually on the LAN and not on a remote connection at the time?

Yes, all on the same LAN. Since I can connect with Roku, I'm thinking the problem is less at the server and more something related to iOS. Maybe there are security settings that changed with 13.3.1? I don't have any find of firewall running on iOS.

Have you tried a manual connection from the ios app by adding a new server and entering the ip address?

Haven't tried setting up a new server, will do.

I'm running a dig tool (dyndig) on my phone, which shows the host name is resolving to the correct ip. But this is doing a query to the cloud. I don't know what the hostname is resolving to from an iPhone app - is there a way to tell? I checked my wifi connection; it was set to auto for dns, so I switched it to manual and entered opendns,

Not that I know of. Let us know how it goes when trying to connect via direct ip. Thanks.
