 It was already unchecked, so I checked it and then unchecked it just to be sure, and I still don't have sound.

Just noticed the screenshot I posted of my AMD software was just for "recording". I can't seem to find the general audio section of the software.

I figured it out!

 

I've been scouring the manual for my receiver, and came across "DEC. PRIO" (Whatever that stands for); and it was set to PCM. I switched it to auto, and tried the first filter you gave me and it's working!

 

Thanks for all your help @. I'll likely play with the different options you gave me tomorrow, and see which I like better (unless there's one you think would be the best to stick with).

Also, @, I'd like to post my log output to make sure this is working right, since the file I tested is AAC 5.1, yet my receiver is displaying "Dolby Digital" which I believe to be AC3, so it seems like even though I have passthrough enabled, it's still being converted because if I disable the filter my receiver displays "LPCM".

The AC3 encoder just resamples the audio. It doesn't alter the channels, unless you have 7.1 AAC. AC3 only supports 5.1. There isn't a way to differentiate the channel count. I would suggest you use that and not the upmix option.

I'm actually going to switch up my profile for this. I'm preferring the sound quality of the surround upmix, compared to the AC3 encoder.

If you only have 5.1, you can just use:

That's a very tough call. I'm having a hard time deciding between 

af=lavcac3enc=yes:640:2

and 

af=surround

now... I've noticed that using the latter, some of my dolby digital files show up on my receiver as "LPCM 192" and some of my AAC files show up as "Dolby Digital" for some reason...

 

Also, anything that comes up as LPCM doesn't allow me to choose which "sound field" I want to use, which is fine since those just alter the way they were originally mixed, but I thought that was an interesting side effect.

 

LPCM seems to be quieter than AC3, I can't tell yet which has the better sound though...

That sounds like your receiver is doing something with the audio. But you can boost the output. There are options for that. I like the surround option, because I get more LFE.

I just finished calibrating my system to DVE specs yesterday (75dB on all channels). I've noticed that certain titles I get a lot more LFE data on my little 150W Sony sub compared to my two custom 400W subs being powered by a separate Peavey IPR1600. I guess the Peavey crossover is set lower or something...

 

For some reason it seems I've had the opposite experience that you're having (in my very brief testing just now). Anything that comes though as LPCM sounds kind of thin compared to the ones using Dolby Digital; does that sound right? I've got my receiver dialed in pretty good right now, I spent a lot of time on it the past couple of days.

 

It's kind of tough I guess because I have so many different media types using different encoders, and it takes a little while to close Emby, switch between mpv profiles, and start playing the movie again; making it tough to compare. I wish I could just hit a button to switch profiles until I found one I liked best lol.

What's a good movie that you use for testing surround effect and LFE? I've been using the intro for Infinity War for subtle LFE during the Marvel logo, and clear dialogue when the alien guy is talking, the space ship scene at the start of Venom and the part in Godzilla where Rodan is chasing the fighter jets, but I'm sure there are better options out there. Those are just three titles I have that have a true 5.1 audio track. For testing a stereo to 5.1 upmix or re-encode I've been using a stereo AAC copy of "300" starting at around the 4 minute mark.

 

When playing the opening scene of Infinity War, AC3 seems to be an average of 6dB louder than LPCM for some reason, that could account for the "thin" sound I noticed.

If you're using 5.1 the LFE is already specified. That will remain unchanged, unless you deliberately set a lower frequency when using surround upmixing. The AC3 encoder will just use the channel that's already there. But when using surround for stereo upmixing, it pulls out as much of the LFE as is present in the file. I find it's much more than using the AC3 encoder.

It seems like passthrough is working just fine on my system, which is good to know. The only codec I've found so far that mpv is affecting is AAC, which makes it much easier for me to test, but I'm surprised thats the only codec that's being affected.

The AC3 encoder will convert all audio that isn't being bitstreamed. PCM is the decoded output. It's the decompressed audio, same thing your receiver does when you bitstream the audio to the receiver. But instead of your receiver decoding the audio, the software is doing it. The volume output is a little higher because mpv first decodes the AAC audio, in doing so, the volume is boosted a little, then the AC3 encoder is used to re-encode the audio. The surround filter doesn't alter the volume by default. It comes down to taste. Which you like better :)

One more question (kind of off topic, I know) I have for you if you don't mind: I'm tinkering with the lower frequencies on my system, and as I said before, I have three subs I use (one small powered sub for regular viewing, and two large cabinets with external amp for when I want to shake the house, lol). I noticed that my small sub seemed top pick up a lot more on the LFE so I got the manual out and found that it's effective range is 35Hz-160Hz. My Peavey amp (powering my large subs) has 3 settings per channel: High Range, Full Range, and Subwoofer. Since I've owned it I've had it set to "Subwoofer", which is a built in crossover set to 100Hz; obviously this is why I'm not hearing as much from it as my other sub, since I'm missing from 101-160Hz with that setting.

 

My question is, should I set my sub amp to full-range? I can't seem to find an adjustment in my receiver settings for a subwoofer crossover setting like I can with the front, center and surround channels. Or will my sub only get what's on the LFE channel by default (which I think for Dolby standards is anything below 120Hz)?

 

I just feel that by having my amp set to 100Hz crossover, I'm missing out on a lot of LFE, but I also don't want to end up with a lot of muddiness if it's getting sent higher frequencies than it should be by having the crossover disabled.

The opposite is true. The lower the frequency, the more rumble you get :)

 

I would have thought that setting subwoofer would be the best option, but they just may not go as low as the other sub. I know a guy that had a 12Hz sub. That thing shakes the walls, when you play audio that has that range.

The opposite is true. The lower the frequency, the more rumble you get :)

Sorry, I may not have been all that clear. I know the lower the frequency, the more rumble. I just mean that my small sub has more sound coming from it, not lower frequencies. This I believe is because even though 100-160Hz isn't a very low rumble, it's still a fairly low frequency and still a sound that my larger subs are totally ignoring while filtered to 100Hz and lower.

 

Also, my large subs go down to 18Hz (small one only goes down to 35Hz) and they definitely knock pictures off the walls lol. A friend of mine said he thought a plane was crashing into the house when I showed him a low frequency sweep with the volume cranked up haha

 

I'm just not sure if turning the sub amp's crossover off will muddy the sound too much, or if my receiver automatically filters everything that's connected to the sub channel. I guess I'll have to do some testing tomorrow when I can turn up the volume louder. I know some receivers have a separate setting for LFE filter, but mine only has configurable crossovers for the main channels.
