How to automatically upmix stereo (and anything less than 5.1) to 5.1?

I've tried fiddling with the settings and currently have speaker layout set to 5.1 and passthrough enabled for all options, and my receiver only utilizes the rear speakers for videos that have a 5.1 track; everything else only uses the front channels.

 

In the past I had my receiver's (Sony STR610) HDMI mode to "TV/AMP" which forced Windows to output everything as stereo and then my receiver would upmix to however many channels I had set up, but it wasn't "true" 5.1, so I've since switched the HDMI mode to "AMP" which allows Windows to see that it's connected to a 5.1 device, and the titles in my collection that have a 5.1 channel track sound much better; unfortunately a lot of my collection only has a stereo track, so I'm only getting sound up front for those titles.

 

I'd like to know if there's a way to upmix everything that isn't already 5.1 to utilize all of my speakers through Emby, or some other software.

 

Any tips would be appreciated, thanks.

Give me an example of an audio track that you want to do with this.

One that I tried earlier was AAC Stereo in an mkv container, if that's what you mean.

 

I think the issue I'm having (compared to how I was utilizing all of the speakers with my previous setup) is because windows is outputting 5.1 to my receiver, but the rear channels don't contain any audio (since it's just a stereo track); with this happening, my receiver can't upmix the audio since it thinks it's already 5.1, and I can't use any of the built in decoders (PLIIX, Neo6, etc) with my receiver in this mode. I'd rather not have to switch HDMI modes on a case by case basis while watching movies in ET.

 

In my old setup I was outputting a stereo source, and my receiver was (to the best of its ability) faking 5.1 audio with its internal decoder (which I was able to select while the HDMI mode was set to "TV/AMP".

 

So I'm guessing I'd need some sort of Windows based decoder software to convert my stereo audio tracks to "fake" 5.1 on the fly, if that's at all possible. I obviously don't know a whole lot on the subject though...

I just set it up earlier today after following one of your posts while trying to figure this out on my own. I'm not really sure what to look for in the log though, since there's an awful lot of information in there.

 

And as far as output, I'm not really sure to be honest. Ideally I guess I'd like something similar to the way my receiver would up mix stereo content to simulate 5.1 surround sound, but at this point I'd probably settle for just duplicating the front channels on the back speakers if I had to... I'd rather have a simulated surround effect though, if at all possible.

Well, things like Pro Logic are total crap. Are you wanting to only upmix audio that isn't being bitstreamed? 5.1 PCM output? 5.1 AC3 output? Only certain audio codecs? I need to write a config line that'll give you what you want. This will also be applied to all of your media. Music, music videos...... so I need you to be specific on your desired outcome.

Honestly, I don't really know anything about the different codecs, etc. I'd just like to have stereo audio tracks sound like they're 5.1 surround sound. I'm not sure about different codecs, and decoders, sorry. I'd like anything that already has 5.1 channels stay the way it is, and everything else to be upmixed/re-encoded or whatever makes more sense; I don't really know the difference to be honest...

 

As far as mpv.conf; I've just created the file itself and told it where to log to as explained in your tutorial. I haven't added anything else to it (nor would I know how to).

Also, I don't have any music/music videos; just TV and Movies, so if everything ends up as 5.1, that's fine. And from what I understand AC3 with a high enough bitrate is very similar to PCM, but at a lower file size, so I'd assume that would be fine, I'm not an audiophile by any means.

I'm not getting any sound now.

I didn't have exclusive mode enabled, I'm not sure why it said that... But the line you posted seems to work, thanks!

 

Will this affect anything that has a proper 5.1 (or higher) track? or does it leave that alone?

 

I'm not an audiophile by any means, but I would obviously like everything to sound as good as possible (within reason).

 

EDIT: After looking through a handful of titles, I've got a mixture of AAC Stereo, AAC 5.1, DTS 5.1 and Dolby Digital 5.1 (I'm sure there are others as well); I just want to make sure I'm not losing quality on some of the titles that already have 5.1 audio by using the mpv code to re-encode the stereo tracks.

That's a bit vague, but I think you mean bitstreamed audio? No, it won't affect the audio you have chosen to pass through, in the Theater settings. What it does is upmix any non-bitreamed stereo audio, to 5.1 PCM

Okay, that clears it up a bit for me (I think, lol). Thank you. Since I don't know anything about fiddling with mpv, I just want to make sure I'm getting the most out of it :)

I just tested an AAC 5.1 Movie with and without that filter, and there's a quite noticeable difference in sound quality. With the filter it's much quieter and is missing a lot of the sound effects in the rear channels compared to having the filter off. I have passthrough enabled for all formats, and they're all compatible with my receiver.
