Hardware acceleration on MacOS server ?

Recommended Posts

Hi fellows,

I wonder if there's any hardware acceleration on MacOS emby server ? If so, which kind of Mac models are supported ?

Lifetime licence here, works well on a i5 4690T Windows server but I'm considering charging if to a recent NUC or a Mac Mini from last year...Mac could be nice for many reason but losing hardware acceleration isn't acceptable.

Hi, we support MacOS's VideoToolbox. It's not as robust as the options on Windows though, so something to keep in mind.

Thanks for your quick answer !

What do you mean by "not as robust" ? Less efficient ? Unstable ? Or something else ?

It doesn't support quite as many formats.

Ok Thanks ! I'll have to find another (bad) reason to switch to Mac ;-)

Hello,

I'm trying to use hardware transcoding on a mac mini 2018 but when playing any movie (H264 or H265), only the software transcoding seems to be used and the cpu become very high.

What scenario are supported with the hardware transcoding on Mac OS ?

Thanks

Hi, we use MacOS's videotoolbox api and it is somewhat limited compared to other platforms. Can we look at an example? Thanks !

For example when playing a hevc mkv movie in the web player, only the software transcoding is used:

 5de7f68dc49b9_Annotation20191204190943.p

Same with 1080p h264 movie:

5de7f7245601a_Annotation201912041909432.

I have transcoding enabled in the server settings:

5de7f779302f8_Annotation201912041909432.

Do you need log files ?
