No, just have to get the bits there.  I'm just updating all my wireless to 802.11ax and using extenders/bridges where needed

Alright, I think I'm getting pretty set on what I need.

Since the DS1817+ has 2 internet ports, can I go from the router to the NAS in one port, and then out the second port and into the Shield?  Or is it better to go Router to Switch and then from the Switch to the NAS and the Shield?

One thing to consider is single or dual drive redundancy. If you go with the latter, more bays is a good idea. I've had many drive failures over the years and I know that TWO drives failing at once is rare, but very possible.

A little story: before the Synology, when I had a Drobo, I had just enabled the dual drive redundancy and about a week later a drive failed.  No problem, popped another in.  During the rebuild, when there is a huge about of drive activity, a second drive failed on me.  Had I not had that enabled, I probably would have lost everything.

I configured my Synology out of the box with dual drives.
