What updates what during a library scan?

I'm moving from MB2 to MB3 with the server and MBC client installed on the same PC. I used a

local "metadata" folder in MB2 with episode jpg and xml files in each TV season folder and

movie.xml files in my movie folders. I want to keep using the same local metadata setup in MB3,

and I don't want it to be auto-updated. I was careful to uncheck the "Download Metadata From the

Internet" and "Save metadata in local folders" boxes in the Dashboard Metadata section before

creating the libraries on the server.

When I clicked on "Scan Library" after creating my libraries, The xml files in all of my local

folders were changed or replaced. The xml files are still there, but they have date stamps that

show they were changed during the library scan. For one thing, the "Overview" tag is missing now

in all of my xml files, so Chocolate doesn't see any show descriptions.

Could someone please explain how the metadata is handled in this MB3 client-server relationship?

I had assumed that the "Library Scan" function is used to update the server with what's found in

the local content folders, but that doesn't seem to be the case. When the "Library Scan" is

initiated, what gets copied to where? Does the server update the local metadata, or is it the other way

around? Where is the xml data stored on the server? When I look at the metadata in the Chocolate

theme, where is Chocolate getting the metadata from?

Any help would be appreciated.
