Just a bit of a nitpick / comments / thoughts...

Should these really have grey backgrounds...

1920x800...

720x576

Sometimes they're there, sometimes not. Would it be better without ? but then maybe there should be a proper border to stop them almost disappearing into the background.

Just wondering.

We have a few image container aspect ratios that we use - 16*9, 4:3, 2:3, 1:1, etc. If it doesn't fit one of those exactly then you'll see the background color of the container filling the rest of the space.

Technically the shadow applied to the placeholder is applied by the Theme and is a different color/shade in each Theme.

All fair enough. Not a biggie, hence the title.

Edit - though if you ever feel the urge, I wouldn't have thought that 1920x800 and 720x576 are that unusual.
