mhaar49 1
new to Emby, former plex user. Fresh install of emby on desktop(server), fresh install of emby on shield(client), no wifi involved, all Ethernet cable. any and all movies stop and revert to title menu screen after roughly 10 min. primarily MKV files, display set at 480p. Chromecast to shield through emby works flawlessly. My main question I guess is will emby only play for 10min for their free app trial run, or is it something more? arrbee99 1561
Well if this https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Wiki/wiki/Emby-Premiere-Feature-Matrix is up to date for Android TV / Fire TV it shouldn't be a licence thing for a while. No idea about technical stuff, though not sure about the display set to 480p bit ? I guess others might need a bit more info, e.g. does it play on desktop ok, is it transcoding, are you using subttiles, can you provide logs, see https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/739-how-to-report-a-problem/
mhaar49 1
desktop playback seems fine, turned display down to 480p mainly as a test. all music playback seems to work just fine, seems to be something within the app itself. no other playback issues with any other app(netflix, prime etc..). only had emby for the weekend so far, so wasn't sure if this is a known problem. can play a movie and provide logs if needed. attempted 6 diff movies so far, all mkv i believe. will attempt avi file and report back. mhaar49 1
AVI file also stops at 10 min mark. pushing play will allow another 10min of playback
arrbee99 1561
Well at least its consistently annoying. Suppose it could be a 10 minute limit during a trial thing, but not according to the feature matrix and music is OK. There's stuff to look at, like logs from the server, and logs from the Shield (but probably best to wait to see if you get asked for them). There's the Server home page which shows if its direct playing or not, there's stats for nerds under one of the options in the Shield Emby app which all might show useful stuff (just not to me unfortunately). Might be worth trying different playback settings in the app, under gear icon > quality, but I'm just guessing. But I guess hopefully people who know what they're doing like Luke or Ebr will get back to you
mhaar49 1
well i know it's not a speed issue(60 up, 60 down), I know it's not a hardware issue, I custom built my pc. no hard drive spin down issue, hell, all solid state drives. i did notice all logs show transcoding. as I've stated i'm new to emby, where is the setting to move to direct play? I seem to be overlooking it.
arrbee99 1561
Am worrying as I don't know much about this stuff really I'm asking the wrong questions and maybe leading you in the wrond direction. But anyway, I wasn't meaning internet speed, if thats what you meant by 60 up 60 down, I meant that there are speed options in the Emby Shield app itself which might affect things somehow. I can't offhand think of a way to make if direct play mkv files (and others). I also use a Shield via ethernet from the Windows PC which has Emby server on it and they play BR rips fine, though they have been through Handbrake which drops the bitrate significantly. Possibly you could try creating another user here and unticking the boxes that allow transcoding (bearing in mind following anything suggested by me can be pretty risky...) and it might just not play stuff or maybe possibly it'll direct play stuff. Luke 37151
Hi there, we're sorry to hear about this. It's not related to the trial. Can you please follow the instructions at the bottom of the page here: https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/739-how-to-report-a-problem/ And submit an in-app log? Thanks ! ebr 14945
Hi. If the items are direct streaming and forcing it to transcode by either changing the quality setting or using "Playback Correction" fixes it, then you are encountering a known firmware bug on the Shield that is supposedly in the process of being fixed by Nvidia. ebr 14945
@@mhaar49 that playback looks fine but what happens if you turn off the subtitles?
mhaar49 1
movie with subtitles made it to 20:33 seconds, which is 10 min longer then normal. An error mssg popped up but i didn't catch it in time to read. movie without subtitles made it to 10:10 with "no playable items" coming on screen
mhaar49 1
also, once playback stopped with error mssg the screen was "froze". i have to back out or esc back one screen to regain control. it is a mirror image of the title menu screen. ebr 14945
Hi. The local user is actually "Matt" correct? This looks like the same problem that was reported by one other user a while back. I cannot recall if we found the ultimate cause but something in the Android system is pausing our app which causes it to stop playback. It is as if the screen saver is kicking in (but that shouldn't be happening). What other apps do you have installed on the device?
mhaar49 1
yes srry, just "matt". the only other apps downloaded are Pandora,Netflix, Prime video, and Vimeo
ebr 14945
Do you happen to have this option set as well? https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/62637-playback-randomly-stops/?p=691581

ebr 14945
all sleep and screensaver functions turned off. testing now I think you misunderstood the post I pointed to. That user had his device in developer mode and had disabled the screen saver in that mode. He then re-enabled it and I think the problem went away. Counter-intuitive, I know... ebr 14945
same movie, problem persisted at 10:01 into viewing I think that is significant. Something I think is running on your device after 10 minutes of inactivity and it is making our app believe that we are going to the background.
