I can only get movies to play on my phone...

I am brand new to emby and the whole media server thing in general (i ripped my first 4 movies last night). Thanks in advance for your patience with my noobiness.

I have a server setup on my LAN.  I have connected to the server locally a Sony Bravia 4k TV, my Windows 10 computer and a Galaxy S7+.  All that went swimmingly well, not a single issue with installation and configuration.  It only took me about 20 minutes to get it all setup.

The problem: When i try to play any of the ripped movies on the TV or Windows 10 machine, the little circle thing just spins and spins, it never plays.  Everything works great on my phone, movies play immediately.  I have no trouble playing home movies (shot on cell phones) to any device.  I can also play all the movies on my windows 10 machine in windows media player both from the local windows drive and over the LAN from the server (i am assuming this indicates that the windows machine is capable of playing the files in the native format?)

I am not sure where to start with troubleshooting, or even where to post my question on these forums.... is this a server issue, a client issue or an issue with the way I rip or convert the files?

Any help with where to start would be appreciated.  This is getting super frustrating.... i am hoping i have just missed a checkbox somewhere.

A bit about my setup:

I used makeMKV to rip the DVDs and blue rays.  I used Handbrake to convert/compress one of the movies a few different ways just to see if that would make a difference, but it hasn't.

Server is a Dell PowerEdge R710 II | 2x X5670 2.93GHz | 64GB | 4 x 8 tb Raid 5

  • FreeNAS running on bare metal
  • Emby is running as a plugin in FreeNAS
  • Emby has its own dedicated gigabit NIC for streaming

Everything is connected via a gigabit Ethernet switch (Juniper EX4200) all CAT6 cabling and patch cables.

pfSense Router with pfBlocker installed (not sure this matters as the switch should handle all the internal LAN traffic)

Hi, how did you install emby server, and is your freebsd environment configured to use quarterly packages or latest packages?

Hey Luke!

I installed the FreeNAS plugin as per the short but succinct instructions under the dropdown for freenas on this page:

https://emby.media/nas-server.html

As for the freebsd environment configuration... i have no idea... i will need to do some googling to even figure out how to determine what packages it is using...
