Video stutter after 17-20 min

Hi, I'm quite new to emby, but now I have to report my first problem:

My video files start to stutter after ~20 minutes - sound plays without problems. Stopping (not pause!) the video and then restarting fixes the problem for the next ~20 minutes.

This happens with all the episodes in this format: 1080p 25fps.

My playback device ist the NVidia Shield ATV (2017) with the newest firmware Shield Experience Upgrade 7.0.1 (Oreo). It is set to 4K 422 12 bit 59.94 HZ. When I start playback in emby the display correctly switches resolution and refresh rate to 1080p 25Hz 422 12bit.

Emby server is installed on my Synology DS418play (DSM6.2, upgraded to 6GB RAM). It was installed as described here. Transcoding is deactivated so I can't attach the transcoding log.

In the attached server log, you can see that I started watching at 21:18:30 and stopped the first time at 21:35:46 because of stutter. Then I restarted and stopped again at 21:55:34.

This is what Mediainfo shows:

The same files play without problems on my Raspberry Pi with Kodi and even on the Shield ATV with Kodi.

Any help would be appreciated, especially because I bought the lifetime subscription :-)

Hi, just want to confirm, if you reactivate transcoding, does this still direct play?

Can you please describe exactly what you mean by "stutter"?

Do you mean the video pauses and restarts or do you mean the frame rate doesn't look right?

Have you tried it without the frame rate switching?

By "stutter" I mean the effect like playing a computer game with low end hardware. Especially movements are choppy. It's a bit like the well known 3:2 pulldown effect but it appears permanently.

I have made a video showing the effect, but I'd prefer to not upload it for the public. If needed, I can send a link via PM.

I haven't tried without frame rate switching yet. You mean setting the Shield to 25fps and then deactivate the frame rate switching in emby?

Both experts are speaking German so it's easyer for me to explain:

Das Video ruckelt nach der angegebenen Zeit im Prinzip permanent. Es ist nicht furchtbar stark, doch speziell bei Szenen mit viel Bewegung deutlich sichtbar. Es geht nie von alleine weg, aber stoppen/starten oder sogar ein einfacher Sprung um 30 sec (mit einem Druck auf der Fernbedienung) löst das Problem für die nächsten rund 20 Minuten.

You can PM me the link to the video.  Thanks.

By disable the framerate switching, I mean just turn the option off in the app and try it that way.  Many modern TVs do a good job of interpolation such that switching the framerate isn't always necessary.

Is the playback device on the same network as the server/media content?

I just sent you the link.

The problem is that diasabling the frame rate switching also disables the resolution switching. 1080p upscaled to UHD on the Shield doesn't look as good as when the Samsung TV does the upscaling.

Shield and NAS are in the same network and the connection is quite good. Even UHD content is played without problems.

I sent you the link via PM. At a PC monitor it doesn't look that bad, but at a 65 inch screen the stutteringcan't be overseen.

Yeah, I'm having a hard time seeing an issue viewing the video of the video across a remote connection.  But, I think we're definitely talking about framerate stuff as opposed to actual stuttering.

Try setting the Shield to 1080/60 and playing without the auto switching option - do you still see this effect?

I think I found a solution for my problem:

If I disable  the "exact rate matching" in the emby app on the Shield, the 25 fps video is played at the correct resolution but with 50 fps. I started one of my problematic video files and it runs absolutely smooth after about 34 minutes.

I hope this setting has no negative side effect to other video formats.

Thanks for the feedback.  That option was created specifically for cases like this - where tweaking which exact rate was selected makes a difference.

When playing 23.976fps sources, emby switches to 24fps so there is a negative side effect of disabling "exact rate matching".
