Shield can't play some 4k HDR movies

I'm 99% sure that this CUDA related. When playing some of these, the picture breaks up and freezes while the audio continues. I have the same issue with my GTX 1050. Playing these files with anything else other than CUDA, they play just fine. I sent the in app log right before posting this. Is there a possibility of using different hardware decoding? nvdec works perfectly. with my GTX 1050.

No, there is no option for using different decoders if I found your log (you didn't provide all the information so I can't be sure..) I don't see any obvious errors.

I was afraid of that. Maybe I'll experiment with different players. CUDA isn't a very good decoder.

I just reported the issue to Nvidia. I'll see what they have to say.

Really? How are your videos encoded?

Care to supply a sample, or media info?

Too big to share, but here are the details.

Just added another 4k movie that CUDA can't play....that makes 9.

There's no CUDA decoder on the Shield. Most players are using Android's MediaCodec api to get access to the device's hardware decoder.

But I would imagine it uses the same architecture, wouldn't it?

I was able to slice off a piece, for those interested in testing. I get the same faulty playback with cuda-copy on the HTPC.

It won't play on my Shield either.

Stats for Nerds in the ATV app is reporting it as an "mov" container.

My WW movie in 4K is an MKV container and plays flawlessly.

Perhaps you could re-encode it to an MKV as a test?

It is in mkv. I only used mp4 to lop off a piece. It isn't the container. It has something to do with how they are encoded. I don't know what. And they play with every other decoder. That's why I reported it to Nvidia. I was already talking with a level 2 tech about another issue, so I just slid this in at the end of that.

How did you encode it?

uuuuummmm.....I didn't :)

But I have 9 movies with the same issue. Taking a cursory look, they vary. But I imagine there is some commonality in the encoding.

What should happen when i play the WW snippet, because it's fine on my Shield?!

The picture breaks up. What version of android are you on?

Nougat.

What does mean "picture breaks up"?

No picture at all? Right from the start or after some time?

Here's a screencap from my HTPC, but it's exactly the same on the Shield
