CBers 7015 Posted June 15, 2018 Posted June 15, 2018 The Shield is the best - you pay for what you get. @? 2
mastrmind11 720 Posted June 15, 2018 Posted June 15, 2018 the MiBox comes in 2nd behind the shield, imo.
maegibbons 1268 Posted June 15, 2018 Posted June 15, 2018 the MiBox comes in 2nd behind the shield, imo. I second this statement. Also the Fire TV Gen2 boxes work very well too. Krs Mark
Guest asrequested Posted June 15, 2018 Posted June 15, 2018 I haven't got my Shield, yet. Maybe today, but the mibox tv guide works very well.

You say you've tried lots so I'm guessing you've been trying boxes running a touch based Android release wedged in. Nvidia Shield and Xiaomi Mi Box are Android TV and work quite well with most content including mpeg2 Live TV, Netflix, Hulu, Sling, etc. Most Android boxes for TV are a crapshoot and I don't know if any can handle video transcoding. FireTV works well for most content but can't handle mpeg2 transcoding of Live TV. Edited June 16, 2018 by Q-Droid
neik 868 Posted June 16, 2018 Posted June 16, 2018 (edited) Hi @@Q-Droid, FireTV works well for most content but can't handle mpeg2 transcoding of Live TV. Can you elaborate this a bit, please? Apparently, the HW decoder of my FTVS is having some issues in decoding some HD channels which leads to a flickering and messy image. I am using MPV and Stat for Nerds says: - Play method: direct - Stream type and container: mpegts - Video Codec: H264 - Audio Codec: MP2 Edited June 16, 2018 by neik

Q-Droid 848 Posted June 16, 2018 Posted June 16, 2018 (edited) Hi @@Q-Droid, Can you elaborate this a bit, please? Apparently, the HW decoder of my FTVS is having some issues in decoding some HD channels which leads to a flickering and messy image. I am using MPV and Stat for Nerds says: - Play method: direct - Stream type and container: mpegts - Video Codec: H264 - Audio Codec: MP2 FireTV boxes and sticks can't decode mpeg-2 video in hardware. FireTV sets likely do since they usually have a tuner for ATSC (North America models). H264 is supported so the issues you have might be related to H264 profile level and/or frame rate. The strange thing is that I've been using the Amazon FireTV specs page as a reference for some time and now it states that Gen 2 devices have mpeg-2 support though I'm 99% certain this is a mistake and a result of the page update for new FTV devices. Trying to play mpeg-2 video on FireTV external device results in dropped frames and eventual freeze once the CPU gets hot enough. Edited June 16, 2018 by Q-Droid
Guest asrequested Posted June 17, 2018 Posted June 17, 2018 I just setup my Shield, and comparing it to the MiBox, there isn't much difference when playing media. The start up time is the same, it plays all the same files. responsiveness is comparable. It does have wider audio support, if you choose to use it with surround sound, but if you're only using your stereo TV, it's just the same as the MiBox. I just hooked up the MiBox to my HDR display, and played a 4k HDR movie. Perfect playback (see pic) 1
