For what purpose?

Overall encryption and security.

It would allow select external users easy pin access if VPN were enabled for them.

VPN connection can be set to different priority for QoS.

That's all I can think of now. I'm sure there are others.

https://openvpn.net/ is probably the leading most used software for VPN there is and this has been open source since it started.  You can use this software with almost every commercial VPN provider or you can run the server yourself on your own LAN.  Many home routers have this ability built into them as well.  You can even use 2f with it.

Unless you are going through a 3rd party server to obscure where the client is connected, what do you gain vs just using https which encrypts the connection?

The only reason I would think of using a VPN is if you want to completely control who from the outside can see your Emby server (or any other internal servers).  Just know that this puts a huge burden on friends/family if you plan to do something like this.

I certainly wouldn't think this would be something that would be built into any clients.  I doubt it's even possible on some platforms such as Roku to do but that's just a guess and I have no dev experience on that platform.

I already have several friends and family who connect through a VPN to my server before accessing Emby. Not a huge burden. Building it in would be cool.

I suppose I'm thinking more of any standard VPN as opposed to specifically a PIA vpn. Wasn't clear in original post. Just read an article about PIA and got exited about the possibilities. Didn't think about openVPN before my OP.

If PIA can build their client into a chrome extension, I see possibilities for select devices.

Personally i think vpn's are far more useful on the device itself rather than inside an app. Not to mention if emby did put a vpn into emby which type should they use? Then there is also all the troubleshooting and support for a vpn, which can be finicky. I could see how this might be possible with vpn's being built into browsers or sometimes just as browser add-ons but i would doubt that it is very appealing to emby. On the bright side the mi box devices i use and my fire tv all support openvpn :)
