Is there a way to force no transcoding?

I have emby setup, have a test folder, have firetv, and have allot of mp2, mp4, files.  I did setup the nfs to network storage.

My questions are does the trial version of the amazon firetv app allow play by VLC and directplay?   Can I turn off all transcoding and only if a file would not play I would then process that file through handbrake.

Yes or no, I guess what has now started to frustrate me is a poorly documented process that has tiers of support and feature and no real answers.

But again what i want is:

Nas to feed the nfs path

Artwork at the storage folder location

Let fireTv do the transcoding

use the VLC player or native codec to fire

run from Ubuntu server

finally the emby software seemed to require that VLC cache the password to a shared drive

While no password was required for the alternate path

Again, want no transcoding, can it be done?

Just serve up the library and art from a server, yes or no?

Don't know if I can help much as an ordinary user, but anyway...

if you want your artwork in the same folder as the media you need to tell Emby - go to the Server Dashboard (using the Gear icon), click on a Library, a window should open in which one of the options is 'Save artwork and metadata into media folders', which needs ticking and saving. You will probably need to go back to the Dashboard, click on Scheduled Tasks and run the items under Library.

As far as I know you cannot just tell Emby not to transcode, so its just best to try it out. Hopefully with a decent connection between the server and the FireTV (I use ethernet) it'll direct play most stuff. BTW FireTV has an option to 'downmix audio to stereo', if you select this I believe that forces stuff to transcode (though that might not be relevant to you).

No idea about that password stuff you mentioned.

Not sure if this will be useful -

Oh, the Dashboard will tell you if the item you're playing is transcoding or not.

hi there @@dee1, welcome. what exactly do you think is poorly documented? have you checked out our wiki?

https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Wiki/wiki

There's even a page for the Fire TV app that goes over all of the supported media for the app:

https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Wiki/wiki/Fire%20TV

Anything not in that list will transcode. As far as forcing no transcode, we currently do not have this option in the app. You could do it at the server level for the Emby user, but be aware that will affect all Emby apps. You can learn more about that by checking out (yep you guessed, our wiki !):

Install MrMc (this is basically Kodi for FireTV/Apple TV).

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01ENT3I1Q/ref=mas_pm_mrmc

MrMc has native support for Emby but i don't know if it supports direct play (no transcoding). There are no Kodi Add-ons available for MrMC except the ones included.

If it doesn't support direct play, you have to install Kodi manually. There are how-to's available online. Then install the official "Emby for Kodi" Add-on. And choose "Native (direct paths)" during initial setup.

The direct answer to your question of how to force no transcoding is to have all of your media in a format supported by the Fire TV.  This is discussed in the wiki article referenced above.

Also, if you disable the user-level option Luke referred to in the server, then the app will attempt to direct play everything but, keep in mind, some of these may fail and then you will have to figure out why and convert them.

The Nvidia Shield will have wider format support (and more power) just FYI.

Lets say that that would be acceptable that I would only use FireTV as the client, can it be done at the server?

I have dropped Matricom players, want to use the Nuc as an emby server, and have consolidated running HDHOMERUN on FireTV

So if I used on user for FireTV apps as the login, disabling delete media etc, another user as admin I could force the one FireTV login/profile to not transcode?

One of the reasons for the questions is I have no idea what is included in the paid app and non-trial version of the Amazon client.

The answer all of the answers are in the wiki isn't the solution I'm looking for and that is probably why it's great to solicit ideas here??

I'm going to look into this, I want more granularity of support.

I can batch process handbrake to take the media to whatever I want, but I don't want to do that if I don't have to.

This was something I hadn't looked into.

The FireTV newer 2nd generation have enough horsepower to handle raw mpg2 at 1080 over ethernet, I'm hard wired and can see the stream rates and information under VLC off of my tuner from silicon dust

Nothing worse than watching washed out flesh that was trans-coded for no good reason.

I wasn't all that thrilled with a default UPNP punch out shot on my router (good I shut that off)

Very large art-poster collections caching on the FireTv is what I don't want, I really want to just let FireTV be FireTv and have the library and media served up in skins for large poster/art

I do get it that there are some who don't get packet drop wireless RDP, or the slowest nic pulling down everything to 54, I'm on a solid switch and well wired.

Yours was the best answer.. geez you think that an ini file and you could just turn off the transcoding

Be nice if your wiki and your software was unprincipled for evaluation, the reading and trying to determine what is paid feature and what is not makes your wiki a chore.

All the answers.. they're in the wiki, well maybe not.

So if you turned off transcoding and then the Fire TV couldn't play your content, you wouldn't end up complaining about that?

Either accept transcoding and enjoy your content, or convert your content to a compatible format that the Fire TV can play without transcoding.

Simple :)
