New atv, no server listed, can't add one manually

As the title suggests. If I log in w connect, no server is listed. When I enter one manually, click "done", it takes me back to the previous screen to use connect or enter one manually. Even if I enter a bogus server address, it behaves exactly the same. I am on an external network, and both my phone and tablet are able to see the server via the app and chrome.

Running latest stable everywhere. This is on a Sony 900E w latest Android. I can't send logs as I can't get into the app. As such, there is obviously no activity in the server log either. Any help is appreciated.

Sounds like something is being blocked at the network level.  You don't get a little gray popup message at some point?

Are you sure you are entering the proper port?

Are you trying to use https?  If so, do you have a proper cert?  Also, if so, you'd need to use a domain name not IP address.

No popup at all which seemed strange. If it were network related, would my tablet and phone work while on the same network as the problem TV? I have a reverse proxy set up at the server w port 80 being redirected to 443, and this setup works for all of my devices and chrome when using my domain name and port 80 in all the emby apps. But I've tried domain with http and https, as well as ip address with http and https. There is what looks like a really quick flash of an error message but it closes too quickly to be able to read it.

You have a real certificate, not a self-signed one?

A self-signed one is not going to work on the Android TV because there is no way to bypass the security error.

Yes, letsencrypt

As I test, I did a vanilla 8096->8096 port forward and still am unable to get access, same symptoms as above. Will try disabling nginx next.

Disabled nginx, vanilla port forward, still same symptoms. I'm at a loss.

What, exactly, does that message look like?

What, exactly, does that message look like?

It's a 1 line text string that contains parenthesis and the only 2 words I can make out are ip address and hostname. It's the same message whether I enter a valid hostname or a fake one, eg "tttt" with default port.

Is it text with a gray background on the bottom 1/3rd of the screen?

I cannot find either of those strings in the app so it may be a system message or coming from a common component I'm using.

No, it's across the lower part of the upper third of the screen.

Should I be able.to select the ok button after entering the server info? I can't remember what it was like on my shield, but on this device I click next, next, done on the keyboard.

I haven't experienced this but can try testing. My server is also not on my local network. In the meantime you may wish to try clearing your app data and cache as that has fixed strange behavior on my end before.

X900e here. Also using nginx with letsencrypt. However the tv is on my local network connected to nginx. No issue here

I am able to connect from my Sony TV. Using a HTTPS connection with CloudFlare certs.

wtf.  Alright, I only have access to the tv on weekends so I'll mess with it some more.  @@ebr, where is the emby log located on the device?  I'll install a file browser and take a look.  I'd imagine the log will contain some meaningful info.  Also, anyone know whether Android has a general error log that might contain general OS level errors like this seems to be?  TIA

We write to the standard syslog.  To view it you probably need to install the Android ADB and connect to the device.

Is this the first remote connection you've attempted over https with this app?  I'm guessing this is a certificate issue as opposed to having anything to do with the actual device.

If your server is on Linux, search out here as there are some solutions for getting the proper certificate chain delivered.

As mentioned a few posts up, even w/ nginx disabled and using the standard 8096 port forward over http, I get the same result.

But to answer your question, yes this is the first time I've tried to connect to my box from this device.  Assuming it were a cert issue (which I don't see how it can be based on my previous observation above), does ATV handle bad chains differently than vanilla Android?  because all of my other Android devices work fine via http and https from the same location.

Yes.  The mobile app is able to ignore some certificate errors that the Android TV one can't.  As far as https goes, I know that people had to do some manual configuration on the server end to make the entire certificate chain be delivered properly and, thus, make Android TV work.

It is also possible that it isn't the cert but some other basic network configuration item but everything right now does point to a connectivity issue as opposed to something with the device or app.

I made a slowmo recording of the screen when I hit the done button after putting in my server info manually and the quick flash of dialogue is not actually an error, it's just the manual entry screen minimizing.  So no error what so ever, it just pops back to the previous screen.  So I installed Opera on the TV and was able to log into my server and play media fine.  Thoughts?

And you cannot connect to any server via any protocol from the app on this TV?  If we could just get you in long enough to get to the send log button, we might be able to see what is happening.

Have you tried both Emby Connect and direct address?

Correct.  Though I only have 1 server, both http and https fail to connect, via ports 80, 443, and 8096, all of which are port forwarded on my router at the server's location.  I have 2 Sony ATV's (different models) and the behavior is the same on both, while Opera works on both.  I have tried multiple times via Connect (no server is listed once I submit the pin and click the next button), and manual connection attempts using both the ddns name as well as the IP simply pop back to the previous screen once I hit the Done button.  I have also tried assigning a static IP to one of the tv's and adding DNS IP's manually thinking maybe it was a name resolution issue, but that did not work either.  I have checked the router settings and there's nothing funky going on there.

It's a pain trying to debug since I am only near the TV's for a few hours on the weekend.  When I get out there again this weekend, I am going to see whether the cable modem has a wifi radio and try connecting directly to that, in order to rule out the Asus router.

Do you (or anyone) have a test server I can try in order to rule out a server config issue on my end?

There are unfortunately no tracert apps in the ATV store....

When you get to that point next weekend, let's try and coordinate a time and I'll get you another server to try and connect to.  Thanks.

Eric, let me know your availability tomorrow.  I'm heading out there tonight and I'll need to plan my day around the debug window we come up with.  Thanks!
