Catchwa 2
Hi, I've noticed this in the last couple of weeks or so. In the bottom-right corner of the screen there's a black box that only appears during playback - when browsing through Emby Theatre screens it disappears. Emby via browser doesn't have this issue. I'm using MadVR as the others video playback options unnecessarily letterbox the video playback when in full-screen (I'm running Windows 10 with text size at 175%, which may be the cause) Pictures of the issue attached in full-screen and in windowed mode. Has anyone else seen this before?
Guest asrequested
GPU? Hardware acceleration? Filter set?
Catchwa 2
Happens on Stable or Edge filter-sets with MadVR or EVR+ (normal EVR is letterboxing badly so I can't use that) GPU is AMD Radeon HD 6550D Hardware acceleration was on Auto, but issue persisted when I changed it to None. I don't think I'd have support for the other options there. Here's the logs if it helps: 2016-09-24 16:29:19.4338 Info App: Http POST fileexists 2016-09-24 16:29:19.7833 Info App: Http POST directshowplayer/play 2016-09-24 16:29:20.1119 Info DirectShowPlayerBridge: Playing media source {"Protocol":"File","Id":"948b75d5c6ac2737d17040ca13703c30","Path":"\\\\nas\\Multimedia\\TV\\Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt\\Season 2\\Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt - S02E12 - Kimmy Sees a Sunset!.mkv","Type":"Default","Container":"mkv","Name":"480P/H264/AAC","RunTimeTicks":20160210000,"ReadAtNativeFramerate":false,"SupportsTranscoding":true,"SupportsDirectStream":true,"SupportsDirectPlay":true,"RequiresOpening":false,"RequiresClosing":false,"VideoType":"VideoFile","MediaStreams":[{"Codec":"h264","Language":"eng","TimeBase":"1/1000","CodecTimeBase":"1001/48000","Title":"X264-480","DisplayTitle":"X264-480","NalLengthSize":"4","IsInterlaced":false,"IsAVC":true,"BitRate":1274688,"BitDepth":8,"RefFrames":3,"IsDefault":true,"IsForced":false,"Height":480,"Width":720,"AverageFrameRate":23.97602,"RealFrameRate":23.97602,"Profile":"Main","Type":"Video","AspectRatio":"16:9","Index":0,"IsExternal":false,"IsTextSubtitleStream":false,"SupportsExternalStream":false,"PixelFormat":"yuv420p","Level":30,"IsAnamorphic":false},{"Codec":"aac","Language":"eng","TimeBase":"1/1000","CodecTimeBase":"1/24000","DisplayTitle":"Eng AAC stereo Default","IsInterlaced":false,"ChannelLayout":"stereo","Channels":2,"SampleRate":48000,"IsDefault":true,"IsForced":false,"Profile":"HE-AAC","Type":"Audio","Index":1,"IsExternal":false,"IsTextSubtitleStream":false,"SupportsExternalStream":false,"Level":0},{"Codec":"srt","Language":"eng","TimeBase":"1/1000","CodecTimeBase":"1/1000","Title":"English (Forced)","DisplayTitle":"English (Forced)","IsInterlaced":false,"IsDefault":true,"IsForced":true,"Type":"Subtitle","Index":2,"IsExternal":false,"DeliveryMethod":"Embed","IsTextSubtitleStream":true,"SupportsExternalStream":true,"Level":0},{"Codec":"srt","Language":"eng","TimeBase":"1/1000","CodecTimeBase":"1/1000","Title":"English","DisplayTitle":"English","IsInterlaced":false,"IsDefault":false,"IsForced":false,"Type":"Subtitle","Index":3,"IsExternal":false,"DeliveryMethod":"Embed","IsTextSubtitleStream":true,"SupportsExternalStream":true,"Level":0},{"Codec":"srt","Language":"eng","TimeBase":"1/1000","CodecTimeBase":"1/1000","Title":"English (SDH)","DisplayTitle":"English (SDH)","IsInterlaced":false,"IsDefault":false,"IsForced":false,"Type":"Subtitle","Index":4,"IsExternal":false,"DeliveryMethod":"Embed","IsTextSubtitleStream":true,"SupportsExternalStream":true,"Level":0},{"Codec":"srt","Language":"ita","TimeBase":"1/1000","CodecTimeBase":"1/1000","Title":"Italian","DisplayTitle":"Italian","IsInterlaced":false,"IsDefault":false,"IsForced":false,"Type":"Subtitle","Index":5,"IsExternal":false,"DeliveryMethod":"Embed","IsTextSubtitleStream":true,"SupportsExternalStream":true,"Level":0}],"PlayableStreamFileNames":[],"Formats":[],"Bitrate":1274688,"RequiredHttpHeaders":{},"DefaultAudioStreamIndex":1,"DefaultSubtitleStreamIndex":2} 2016-09-24 16:29:20.1119 Info InternalDirectShowPlayer: Playing Kimmy Sees a Sunset!. Guest asrequested
Try replacing the LAV filters. https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/38973-some-files-crashing-emby-theater/?p=369640
Catchwa 2
Renamed the old LAV directory and replaced it with the one from the link. I get the same behaviour - I switched between Stable and Edge also but no luck
Guest asrequested
Does this happen in the web app as well as ET desktop?

Guest asrequested
Only ET desktop, the web client is fine By web app, I mean tv.emby.media. Not web browser (client). Did you try it in there?
Catchwa 2
Ah, sorry. I just tried the web app then and it doesn't happen there.
Catchwa 2
Tried on another Windows 10 machine and worked out the problem. If you go to display settings and set the zoom to 175% you can reproduce the issue. Should I file a bug on Github? I'd prefer to keep the zoom settings as I use ET on a HTPC and I like to see the desktop without standing right in front of it
Guest asrequested
Does your video adapter have a setting to let apps control that?
Catchwa 2
Not that I can see. The two machines that I can reproduce this on have completely different video cards (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 vs AMD Radeon HD 6550D) so I'm pretty confident this is just something that is governed by the Windows setting. Have attached a screenshot of the setting also

Catchwa 2
As I said before, I can't see anything of that sort. Keep in mind, here, that ET is the only app that has this issue when in playback mode (e.g. VLC is fine) and that it hasn't always been this way. Wouldn't that indicate an actual issue with ET?
Luke 37063
Not necessarily. Perhaps other apps are just not using the right api that triggers the problem. I will consult our resident expert directshow expert about but it looks like a possible hardware problem to me. At least that's always been my experience when it comes to graphical anomalies. Guest asrequested
It's using hardware acceleration. Just as a test (I'm curious), try setting it to 'none'.
Catchwa 2
Disabling hardware acceleration doesn't make a difference. Does anyone else have Win10 and can try to reproduce this? Changing the zoom setting doesn't take very long - you just have to log out and log back in again for it to take full effect.
Guest asrequested
I think mine is at 150%, it's been a while since I looked at that. I'll check and test, tonight.
Guest asrequested
OK, I finally got around to testing this. Luke, you need to test this. There's definitely something going on with scaling. First of all, I should mention that I keep my scaling at 125%, and everything works well. I tested at 175% and at 150%. Both had issues, and some would seem to relate to other issues reported. At 175%, I do get the black box as OP describes. Also, I lose a lot of functionality. When playing something, the buttons at the top right stop working. Sometimes the maximize button works, and if it does, it maximizes but doesn't go full screen. Double clicking gets you to full screen, but then you're stuck because the buttons don't work. To get back to the UI, I have to use the keyboard. At 150%, there's no black box, but you still get loss of button control. This may be what's happening here
Catchwa 2
Thanks for testing Doofus. I had been seeing the same issue with the buttons in the top right of the screen, too but this issue was more annoying for me.
lklassen 3
Hi, I have the same issue with Emby Theatre on Windows 10 (HTPC). When display setting is set at 175% I get that small black box in the lower right corner of the screen during ET playback. I tested at 125% as well and same problem. But everything is fine when set to 100% - but then of course, icons and text are really small on the display (42in TV) ...so difficult to see from couch! Thanks
julianb 38
I had this issue too. Back then I owned a 4K samsung TV and the scaling was 300%. it worked just fine, then suddenly one day I got that black box in the corner. I tried reinstall the Theater, new GPU drivers, reinstall of LAV and madVR. Nothing worked. I don't know how it got fixed for me, but I reinstalled windows, change GPU from GTX 960 to RX 480 and I now own an LG 4K tv instead. I had other scaling issues before too, with Emby like low res poster etc. It all works fine now, so it's an bug somewhere.
