2016-09-17 : Pre-release package now available for Annapurna Labs based systems. (e.g. DS416, DS215+, DS715 DS1515 DS2015xs)

 

2016-09-12 : Pre-release package now available for MACOM based systems. (e.g. DS414j)

Evening

 

The Synology platform is fantastic for consolidating a lot of the technology in your home, so being able to have Emby running on it as well is just another well deserved tick in the box.

 

Those of you already sailing this ship, when it comes to Emby, are either loving the hands on and somewhat technical commitment it currently requires or are a little frustrated and pulling your hair out.

 

Emby itself is of course a brilliant media platform - or we wouldn't be here, so we need to lower the entry bar and make installing and updating a simple point and click experience via the DSM UI.

 

Development is already underway as well as looking at the best approach for packaging and handling depdencies; I'll post more as we go along.

 

However, for now you can really help by answering the following two questions:-

 

    1) Are you currently running Emby on Synology? If yes, which Synology platform are you using?

 

    2) Would you be willing to test development packages? (these will install in parallel and not touch or interfer with the existing installation)

Yes I've it running on my DS415+ with the last DSM6

I've also a DS213 with DSM6 where I can test it on.

1) Not really using it at the moment, but tried it a several times. Tried to run it with Docker, worked well, but didn't succeded with net=host. Would like to run it on my ds716+, but couldn't find any package on cytec.

2) Yes, I can help to test it on my ds716+.

I absolutely would be willing to help out in anyway I can. I am currently running an 1813+/DSM 6 w/ update 7 with 4GB of RAM. As lovely as this machine is and has been, I know it's not going to fall on the cutting edge of transcoding potential, but I would love to participate!

This is great news. I know cytec has done a heck of a lot of work towards getting Emby running on Syno boxes.
But to hear that there is active work on developing a proper Syno package is a massive step forward.

I would be more than happy to help anyway I can.
FWIW I am running an Xpenology box. But that should not pose any issues, for all intents and purposes it is a DSM based box with an Intel CPU.

Xpenology build
(Hardware: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.53GHz, 4 GB Ram, 4 x 2 TB HDD in Syno Hybrid RAID)
DSM 5.2-5592 Update 2

Actively using Emby Server Version 3.0.5932.0 to serve up media to HTPC running Emby for WMC.
Will not be updating to DSM 6 any time soon. Xpenology community is still working on a new boot loader for DSM 6

Not on my DS415+ but on a W10 desktop. I've just been waiting to see where this goes but I'm ready to jump in.

Thanks for the comments and support. A quick update...

 

- Initial DSM target will be DSM6, as there are underlying improvements that are beneficial and for Synology box owners there isn't really any reason not to upgrade. For XPEnology users, let's see how they get on in the coming weeks with a DSM6 release, I've seen that Synology have started pushing the toolchains for DSM6 over on SourceForge now. ** we'll come back to this and review **

 

- Initial CPU target will be x86_64, as this covers the most popular models at present and will be the easiest platform to work with as far as initial builds/testing goes. This will be expanded in due course, so I'll have to ask the non x86_64 system owners to be patient for a little while.

 

@@AlwinHummels - is your DS213 a vanilla DS213, i.e. not an air, j or +?

I use emby on my DS214play with DSM 5 at the moment. I am going to migrate on 6 soon.

Yes with pleasure. Especially if Emby uses Hardware Transcoding of the DS214play ;)

@@Darkjeje - what kind of content are you currently transcoding and to what devices? If you could reply with a current transcode log from your Emby server attached, that would be great.

 

@@olli4711 - you can manually install Emby on DSM6; if you're already running Emby and upgrade from DSM5 to DSM6 it should keep running without issue - I haven't had any issue doing that with the systems I've tested on here.

I would like to test it out.  I have Synology ds2015x.  If Linux experience is needed for this, then I'm definitively not the right guy :)

Currently I don't have Emby server installed.  I did have Emby installed at it did work, however I didn't set up a ssd drive for cache so everything went slow, eventually just installed it again on my PC, but I use the drives of the Synology for content. Im currently running DSM 6.0-7321 Update 6

Thanks @@TroyBennett, I'm reasonably hopeful that for most testing GUI access will be sufficient.

 

I'm interested by your comment about it 'being slow', as I wouldn't expect Emby to need the raw speed of a SSD drive to perform adequately.

 

What is your disk configuration? Was there a specific activity that you found to be slow?

While you are more than welcome to build your own SPK for emby. i'd still let you know that there is already something like this: https://github.com/SynoCommunity/spksrc/issues/1346

 

Basically thats a working version for x64 and some other arches starting with DSM 5 and up.

Also since it seems we can get the ffmpeg build merged soon this should be updated for all devices which are capable of running DSM 6 in a little while. So why reinvent the wheel if there already is something? Come and join/help rather than do everything up from scratch what i/we already did ;)

I'm aware of this project, I would suggest this is more updating the wheel, than reinventing it; perhaps a few too many assumptions being made here.

 

First thing is is to find out where we're at and the best way to proceed, to address the challenges users have been facing for some time and lower the entry bar for the Synology platform. This will certainly be contributed back at an appropriate point, the ultimate goal being native and straight forward point and click distribution via Package Center.

well there are several ways to do this but as emby is still in development and thus updating regulary it makes it a little hard to provide it through the Synology Repository itself :/

2nd best option would be to use synocommunity as that's kinda the largest SPK Collection i personally know about and something most users already have installed in the Package Center. Then there still is the "problem" of emby updating relatively frequently with sometimes only a few hours/days between releases... the current approach needs you to build new SPK's every time a new version gets out :/ maybe emby could include an self updating system somehow so the downloading can be done from within emby itself.

 

To be clear: This is only true as emby is highly worked on. if the release cycle goes down that should not be a problem anymore ;)

 

And Again: you are more than welcome to even build a complete new System/way if that's for some reason prefered. i just wanted to tell you about that. I think what you want is a more frequently updated emby SPK? which would be unnecessary if the SPK/emby could update itself ;)

There are indeed a few things that need to be considered, and as always there is more than one way to reach the objective; so we will take a little time to make sure we understand how best to reach the goal.

 

Integrating the SPK build as part of the Emby Server build process, will be one way to ensure that packages are always generated automatically for the directly supported platforms.

 

Automatic updates within Emby is certainly an option for consideration, but it is perhaps best to work within the update environment that the platform provides and users are familiar with. For example, Emby on Red Hat/CentOS updates via Yum, which is consistent, expected and familiar.

No, because there is unfortunately no possibility to install this on a DS413.

 

    2) Would you be willing to test development packages? (these will install in parallel and not touch or interfer with the existing installation)

 

If there is a chance to get it on Ds413 definitely.
