storello 0 Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 I've been using SageTV for years and need to move to another platform. Emby looks really promising so I installed the server on my Mac pro desktop and got a basic system working. I'm only looking for OTA DVR functions with a SiliconDust HDHomeRun Connect. So far, so good. I'd rather put the server onto a NAS but my current NAS is not powerful enough. The server works fine on my Mac with one major missing item - the software is not running as a daemon so it stops when I logout. That would be a show-stopper for me. Does anyone know if the software runs as a daemon on Linux based NAS servers? If not, are there are plans to create / support this configuration? Thoughts on FreeNAS? Thanks!
thefirstofthe300 292 Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 Emby can run as a daemon on a Linux-based NAS server. The big thing is writing the unit file to match the init system the NAS uses. If your NAS uses systemd, we have unit files you can customize to your needs. If you are using unRAID, there should already be a plugin for Emby. If you are using OMV, there is also a plugin for it. If we could get the specifics of the NAS, we can provide you with more help.
storello 0 Posted January 17, 2016 Author Posted January 17, 2016 Thanks so much, thefirstofthe300! My current NAS is a Synology DS109j which works fine as a NAS but I'm sure it would gasp if I tried to run the Emby server. I'll need to buy new hardware. and I'm thinking of running FreeNAS. Are there any hardware recommendations for this configuration? My NAS requirements are fairly light so I'm looking for a cheaper solution than buying a new Synology box, and FreeNAS looked like a good pick. I'm still flexible, though. I could also keep it running on my Mac, but I'd prefer to keep the server stuff on a dedicated server.
thefirstofthe300 292 Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 You are right. That NAS will suffocate running Emby. FreeNAS is a great NAS solution as it has ZFS and an Emby plugin. If you want to use ZFS, I would recommend following the hardware recommendations set by the FreeNAS team. It might actually be best to ask the FreeNAS community for recommended specs in this situation. As long as your processor is fairly modern, it should be able to run Emby. I have no experience with OS X so I am not sure if it is possible to daemonize Emby on it with a simple configuration change. You might look into it. Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk
storello 0 Posted January 18, 2016 Author Posted January 18, 2016 Thanks, again the firstofthe300. Someone on the FreeNAS forums suggested this server so bought one. Seems like a heck of a deal and I'll be working with pieces that should all fit together with a minimum of fuss. http://www.dell.com/us/business/p/poweredge-t20/pd?~ck=anav
thefirstofthe300 292 Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 That actually looks like a decent machine as long as you aren't putting it through the ringer 24/7. That should work nicely. Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk
