MSattler 389 Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 All, What I would like to see is the following: 1) Get MB3 Server running on a Raspberry Pi 2, running as a secondary/Mobile MB Server. 2) Allow a user on the Primary MB Server to select files to sync to the Mobile MB Server. The selections would have an additional drop down once Mobile MB Server is chosen, to select the profile of the eventual end client to transcode it to. (iPhone, iPad, iPad Mini, Galaxy Tablet, etc) 3) Content is transcoded on the Primary MB Server, and then synced over to the Mobile MB Server. 4) Mobile MB Server can then be used in a car, setup as a wifi hot spot. Kids connect to the wifi hotspot, use the Media Browser app to connect, get cover art, pick their movie and play back. The Sync folder on the Mobile MB Server can be used at the root of the media. Before leaving on the trip, as soon as the content is synced, it would get cover art as well. I think #4 is something that can be added later on. At this point, I would even be ok with just being able to sync content to the Raspberry Pi and use DLNA to stream the content like I am now. I'm assuming we would need some kind of linux based sync client that connects to Mediabrowser, and allows it to be a sync option? Thoughts?
Deathsquirrel 744 Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 With thd clients getting the ability to sync and do local playback, why bring an extra server?
Cerothen 95 Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 With thd clients getting the ability to sync and do local playback, why bring an extra server? I think he is looking to have a bunch of files sync to one device then each kid can play their own content individually. The issue is that RPI cant really transcode multiple streams simultaneously. Perhaps when there is a linux client that supports syncing he could have mediabrowser server installed with the media directory pointed to wherever the client stores sync files. Alternatively a plugin could be made for server that connects to other servers and imitates a client with sync functionality.
MSattler 389 Posted March 14, 2015 Author Posted March 14, 2015 The iPad's only have 16GB, the Pi should store it. I don't want the pi to transcode, I want the Pi to be a sync client, and have the main MB server transcode everything for the end devices. Once the content is transcoded then it is synced to the Pi. The kids can then access content the same way they do at home with mediabrowser.
thefirstofthe300 292 Posted March 15, 2015 Posted March 15, 2015 I bet this would work if server to server sync is ever built in. I don't know if it is a planned feature. 1
MSattler 389 Posted March 15, 2015 Author Posted March 15, 2015 I bet this would work if server to server sync is ever built in. I don't know if it is a planned feature. That or just find out what the client has to do in order to make itself eligible for syncing. At the very least having a script available on the Pi that says it is available for syncing, and then allowing it to have a share for files to be copied to would be a start.
ebr 15609 Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 I think the folder sync will potentially do this for you because that is basically going to be a way for you to store pre-transcoded versions of your content and then have the server deliver those versions to devices that can play them.
MSattler 389 Posted March 17, 2015 Author Posted March 17, 2015 I understand that, but I have limited Space on my devices while traveling. The point is for this mobile server to hold the movies for those devices. Right now the devices have two maybe three gigs worth of space. The media server would have around 100 gig of space.
MSattler 389 Posted March 17, 2015 Author Posted March 17, 2015 So folder sync to the pi storage Well once the pi has a client, yes. Or are you saying to use something like Rsync? I still would need a way to tell it to transcode it to a iPad Mini, iphone, etc. I envisioned the Pi being an option, and underneath it select a player.
Vidman 590 Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 (edited) Either have the pi storage available as a network share. .or physically plug it into the server . I thought the point was to have an already transcoded version on the pi so there was no need for it to transcode to the ipads? Then just continue using dlna as you already are With the upcoming folder sync feature the pi doesn't need to be a 'sync client' as any filesystem folder/directory is basically a client ...and also there will be more options to allow you to choose exactly how you would like it to transcode to the format you require Edited March 17, 2015 by Vidman 1

What I would like is to essentially have some of the presents like what is in handbrake, Essentially H.264 inside a mp4 container.... just so that I don't need vlc on the ipad for playback.
Vidman 590 Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 (edited) Well Luke has mentioned that this new feature will be 'like having handbrake inside MBS' to paraphrase because I can't be bothered to find his exact quote Edit : OK found it here post #86: http://mediabrowser.tv/community/index.php?/topic/18457-3.0.5529&do=findComment&comment=186697 Edited March 17, 2015 by Vidman

What the other guys said. You sync to a folder on the Pi that is running the server. Then, when a client requests that item, it delivers the synced, pre-converted copy. 1

The only reason I ask is I am trying to figure out if I should start handbraking movies now for a trip in June, or just wait for the server release with folder sync =)
ebr 15609 Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 It is in the current dev release of the server.
Vidman 590 Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 If you follow the link I provided you will see that it is in the current dev version of the server
